Lord of Mysteries: The Color of the Stars
Chapter 14: First Contact with the "Aurora Society"
After finalizing the collaboration, the group discussed various miscellaneous matters, and Julian left Hoy University with Klein.
"Klein, I heard from Captain Dunn that you're joining the 'Night Watch'?"
Julian asked with a smile.
"Yes, Professor Albrecht."
Klein nodded in reply.
"Then you are very close to becoming an extraordinary being."
Julian nodded slightly:
"It's both a good thing and a bad thing, but if I had to choose again, no matter how many times, I would still go down this path."
"Professor, can I know why?"
Klein was very curious about Julian's words and pressed for more information.
"Because in this world, gaining extraordinary power carries the risk of losing control."
Julian chuckled softly:
"But if you don't have the corresponding power, you'll have a hard time even protecting yourself when disaster strikes."
"……I see."
Although Klein didn't quite understand the meaning of the sentence, he was somewhat moved by it, having already experienced the "suicide" incident.
"Good luck. I have something to do, so I'll be going now."
Julian patted Klein on the shoulder:
"Also, we'll be working together soon... so please call me Julian from now on, it'll be easier for you."
"After all, I'm only two years older than you. Calling me 'professor' makes me seem old."
"Okay, Julian."
Klein shook hands with Julian and then watched the assistant professor leisurely walk away.
He didn't rush home, but instead ate a bowl of Fennebot noodles at a roadside restaurant to fill his stomach, and then took a carriage towards the direction of Welch's house.
Julian walked along, glancing up at the signs on both sides of the street:
Harrods Department Store.
"Veterans Club"
"The fortune-telling club... has been found."
Suddenly, Julian stopped in his tracks.
If he remembered correctly, after Klein became a "fortune teller" in the original story, he worked at this club telling fortunes, earning money while consuming potions.
In addition, Hainas Vancent of the Aurora Club is the club's resident divination mentor—and he is also one of Julian's current targets.
The reason for contacting Hainas was twofold: firstly, to further experiment on the contamination of "Star Color" on members of the "Aurora Society"; and secondly, he had a conjecture involving Ince Zangwell and 0-08 that required some details to be confirmed.
Julian tidied himself up a bit in front of the shop window before pushing open the door.
At this very moment, a beautiful woman with her brown hair piled high is busy at the front desk of the fortune-telling club, seemingly organizing various files and documents.
"Hello, beautiful lady."
The woman looked up and saw a young man wearing a beige trench coat and a top hat.
The young man had distinct features, oak-colored hair, and green eyes; he was handsome yet possessed a scholarly air about him.
"...Oh, hello, sir."
The woman paused for a moment, then quickly composed herself.
"Do you want a fortune telling, or do you want to join our club?"
"I want to join the club."
Julian glanced at the name "Angelica Barrehart" on the woman's name tag, then asked:
"How much will it cost, and what is the procedure?"
"Okay. You just need to fill in the details and pay the annual membership fee."
"The annual fee is £5 for the first year, and £1 for each subsequent year. That's all the requirements."
As she spoke, she handed Julian a document.
It contains information about member privileges and benefits, as well as a list of members who currently offer courses and divination services through the Diviner's Club.
At the very bottom is an application form.
"Hainas Vancent... Got it."
After confirming the information, Julian readily took out his pen and began filling out the form.
When it came to the section on "Preferred Divination Methods," Julian thought for a moment and wrote "Face Reading Divination."
In the "divination fee" section, he wrote "4 sulphur".
This price is on par with Hainas Vancent, in other words, he showed enough confidence from the start.
"Face reading and fortune telling?"
Angelica, the receptionist, was very puzzled:
"Mr. Albrecht, face reading... can also be used for divination?"
"able."
Julian chuckled:
"What, never heard of it?"
"No. How was that achieved?"
Angelica pressed for an answer, quite curious.
"Everyone's external state is closely related to their mind and thoughts, and fortune is the result of their thoughts."
"For example, the size and proportion of facial features, the subtle changes in skin tone, and even the palm lines can help with divination."
"If we can capture the relevant details, we can predict the future related to them."
Julian crossed his arms and braced himself on the table:
"I am very good at observing, and most importantly, I can see more color information than the average person, so I can easily grasp the details of other people's state."
"After that, I can use special methods to perform divination... that's about it."
"I see."
Angelica was confused by Julian's description, but she didn't dwell on it too much.
After all, places like "fortune-telling clubs" are never short of amazing people, and most of them have a very low accuracy rate in their divinations.
As long as the money is paid on time, it doesn't really matter for the club.
Not to mention that Julian was quite handsome, so Angelica did not show any contempt, but politely acknowledged his remarks.
But she quickly added:
"However, considering that you have just joined our club and are not yet well-known, I suggest that you appropriately lower your divination fee."
"This will help you acquire customers."
"No need."
Julian smiled and shook his head:
As Emperor Roselle once said, gold always shines.
Just as the two were talking, Julian suddenly heard a voice:
"Angelica, has a new fortune teller joined the club?"
Julian turned around and saw a man walking in from the club's main entrance.
He was about 40 years old, with thick, stiff brown hair that stood up like a hedgehog. He had dark circles under his eyes and wore a black classical robe, giving him an air of incongruity with his surroundings.
"Good afternoon, Mr. Vancent."
Angelica greeted the man warmly as soon as she saw him.
"Vancent? Haynes Vancent?"
Julian's eyes flashed, but before he could make any further moves, he saw Haynes Vancent walk up to him and look at the application form.
"Julian Albrecht... specializes in face reading, charging 4 soules per session?"
Hainas looked surprised:
"If you can charge the same fees as me, you must be quite capable."
"However, forgive my ignorance, but I have never seen a fortune teller who uses this... well, face reading."
At this point, Haynes put down the application form and then turned to look at Julian:
"If it's convenient, could you please take a look at my fortune for the coming days?"
"I'm very curious about this...4. As for Suler, I'd be happy to pay."
He smiled, his eyes filled with a mixture of curiosity and anticipation.
