Lord of Mysteries: The Color of the Stars
Chapter 13 Making Friends with an Angel
The next morning, Julian got up early and took a horse-drawn carriage to Hoy University.
"Phew... the air at Hoy University is definitely better."
Julian took a deep breath, looking at the lush green campus and the Hoy River flowing through the cluster of red brick buildings, and his mood improved considerably.
He first went to the Physics Department's Academic Affairs Office to register and finish up his work before the summer vacation. Then, humming an Azshara-style tune and twirling his water-soil cane, he arrived at the building where the History Department was located.
"...It was a security company that deals with finding, collecting and protecting antiquities. They needed professional consultants, who were paid £3 a week."
"You know, I prefer exploring history to summarizing it..."
Just as Julian pushed open the door, Klein's voice came from an administration office.
He smiled and then walked straight over there.
"Squeak."
The sound of the door opening drew everyone's attention, and soon they saw Julian Albrecht walk in, wearing a beige trench coat and a top hat.
"Gentlemen, I hope I haven't interrupted your conversation."
Julian touched his top hat with his left hand and greeted him with a smile.
Upon seeing Julian appear, Klein paused for a moment before greeting him.
"Professor Albrecht, it's a pleasure to meet you."
"Hello, Klein."
"Buzz..."
Just as Julian and Klein were talking, the "Starry Night" began to emit a faint buzzing sound again.
In fact, from the moment Julian first saw Klein today, he had been on guard against the "Starry Night's" overreaction.
They had met before, but "Starry Night" had not given Klein any feedback at the time.
But the situation is different now, because He absorbed some life force from the "Magician" last night and His presence has been strengthened, so the situation may change.
After all, although Klein is not a "diviner" yet, he actually possesses the "Source Castle" and thus has a mystical connection with the "diviner" path.
Another thing that Julian found interesting was that "Starry Night" did not show the same level of hostility towards Klein as it did towards "The Magician" and the Antigonus family notes. Instead, her hostility was mixed with confusion and a hint of fear.
As a result, He did not act rashly, which relieved Julian.
"Who are you...?"
Just then, Klein's mentor, Senior Associate Professor Cohen, looked at Julian and asked a question with a puzzled expression.
The young man, who looked refined and scholarly, seemed very familiar to Cohen, but he couldn't quite place him.
"Cohen, this is Assistant Professor Albrecht from the Physics Department, from Remberg."
At this point, Mr. Azik took over the conversation, pausing before adding:
"The physics department is on the other side of the Hoy River and doesn't have much interaction with the history department, so it's normal that you don't know it."
"It's rare that you still remember a mere scholar like me, Mr. Eggers."
Julian smiled and stepped forward to shake hands with Azik and Cohen respectively.
In fact, Azik's reaction did not surprise Julian at all.
Although He falls into a deep sleep and loses his memory every few decades, as a Sequence 2 angel, His memory during his waking hours far surpasses that of ordinary people, and even most extraordinary beings.
Moreover, he keenly sensed an inexplicable strangeness in Azik's gaze towards him.
"Professor Albrecht, what brings you to the History Department today?"
After exchanging pleasantries, Cohen asked curiously.
"I've come to see Klein."
Julian chuckled and patted Klein on the shoulder:
"I also work as an external expert consultant at the company he's about to join, so we might be working together in the future."
"I see. But may I ask, what would an antiquities preservation company need an expert in physics like you for...?"
Cohen asked with some suspicion.
"I have invented a new technique that uses radioactive isotopes of carbon to date artifacts, but this technique still needs samples to verify its reliability."
Julian made up a story off the top of his head:
"Staying at the university means I don't get to see many ancient artifacts that haven't been dated, so I need to go to the front lines of archaeology to continue my research."
Could it be carbon-14 dating? It's been invented in this day and age?
Upon hearing Julian's words, Klein immediately raised his head and looked at him with a strange expression.
In Earth's time, carbon-14 dating was invented in the 1940s, while the current technology in the North Continent is only equivalent to the late 19th century. Therefore, this statement does not fit the current era at all.
"Dating antiquities? To what extent can it be accurate?"
Upon hearing this, Senior Associate Professor Cohen became interested.
"Current methods can only achieve an error of about 80 years, but my goal is to achieve an error range of less than 30 years."
Julian smiled and made up a story off the top of his head.
"A 30-year error...a 30-year error?"
Cohen's eyes widened:
"If that's the case, archaeology will undergo a radical transformation."
Instructor Azik, standing nearby, also spoke up:
Indeed, we still cannot accurately date many ancient artifacts, which greatly hinders the progress of archaeological research.
"If Assistant Professor Albrecht's research can make progress, then the situation will change a lot—many mysteries that have plagued the academic community for years will be solved."
He then added with emotion:
"It's truly unexpected that physics and archaeology, two seemingly unrelated disciplines, could achieve such a synergy."
"That's exactly what it means for us scholars."
Julian's heart skipped a beat, and then he said:
"Mr. Azik, Associate Professor Cohen, considering this situation, if Klein and I discover any artifacts of questionable age during our work, could you please help us date them? This would also help correct my research data."
"Of course, I am duty-bound to do anything that contributes to academic development."
Cohen nodded, but then added:
"However, my research tasks are very heavy. Even when the students are on vacation, I still need to lead several projects."
"Therefore, I may not have much time to leave the school. If you can bring the things to Hoy University, I would be happy to help."
"As for me, I have relatively more freedom."
Upon hearing Cohen's statement, Mr. Azik promptly added:
"When I don't have classes, I can go out with you anytime."
"Thank you both so much."
Julian smiled and shook hands with the two history faculty members.
In fact, this was exactly what he wanted.
As a descendant of the Jacob family, he currently possesses some Quaternary artifacts that he can use to date Mr. Cohen and Mr. Azik. Once he has become acquainted with the latter and lowered his guard, he can then engage in further interactions with him.
Having a Sequence 2 angel as a friend brings obvious benefits and convenience!
