Why is his holy light red?

Chapter 20 Illegal Medical Practice

A heart-wrenching scream echoed down the cold corridor.

Hearing the commotion, many prisoners in the cells on both sides turned over, and some even revealed malicious sneers.

It's that unlucky guy, Black Egg, again.

In this shelter where no one sympathizes with the weak, he looks like a giant berserker, but has no skills whatsoever, so he is destined to be bullied.

Annoyed by the noise, one of the guards on duty grabbed his baton, walked to the cell door, and banged on the iron bars twice, yelling, "Don't disturb my sleep!"

After issuing that warning, the prison guard yawned and turned to leave, completely ignoring what the 200-pound giant inside was going through.

Inside the cell, Mercury's right hand was pressed firmly against Black Egg's face like a hydraulic vise, and the blinding red light made the cell look like a film developing room.

"Stop shouting."

Mercury said coldly, "Scream again, and your muscles will dislocate, making your face look even worse than before. Someone this big can't even handle this little bit of pain?"

"It really hurts so much..." Black Egg's massive body struggled desperately in the narrow lower bunk, his broken vocal cords squeezing out an extremely hoarse plea, "I can't take it anymore."

"You'd better hold it in, there's no turning back now." Mercury exerted his strength without any mercy. "It's just simple bone regeneration and muscle reconstruction, isn't it? I suffered much worse injuries when I was five, and I still survived. Shut up and bear it!"

When Mercury was training his superpowers as a child, he was covered in injuries, which he then used to heal himself with red holy light. So he is very aware of this kind of pain, but pain is an inevitable path to strength.

The red holy light transformed into a stream of energy, forcefully cutting into the depths of the black egg's skin and flesh.

Accompanied by the chilling sound of bones cracking, those deformed, misaligned, and improperly healed bones were crushed, and thick hyperplastic scars and clumps of cells were torn apart inch by inch under the bright light, and then forcibly reassembled under the guidance of the holy light.

This treatment was comparable to torture, but Black Egg heeded Mercury's warning, clenched his teeth, and swallowed his screams back down.

As time went on, even though the pain was so intense it made his soul tremble, Black Egg could clearly feel his facial bones being filled in little by little.

The brain, which had been under constant pressure due to skull deformation, suddenly felt a long-lost sense of relief.

Even the eyeballs that seemed about to fall out of their sockets with the slightest blink were firmly put back in their correct positions, bringing a sense of almost exhilarating relief.

This cellular-level reorganization lasted for several hours.

Black Egg gripped the edge of the bed frame with both hands, his fingernails twisted outwards from the force, and bright red blood seeped from between his fingers, staining the rough bedding.

He thought he would faint from the pain, but the eerie red holy light acted like a stimulant, forcing him to stay awake and clearly feel the excruciating pain of every inch of his flesh being regenerated.

Finally, Mercury slowly withdrew his hand.

Black Egg suddenly collapsed onto the bed, gasping for breath like a drowning person just pulled ashore. "Fuck you!...I thought I was going to die!"

The words had barely left his mouth when Blackie froze. His eyes widened in disbelief as he grabbed his throat. "God... my throat..." He paused for two seconds, then his vocal cords began to vibrate uncontrollably, and he blurted out, "I walk down the street with an aura of authority; money galore, girls tucked away; nobody mess with me, don't pretend; this is my territory, everyone step aside, yo!"

"Slap!" A loud slap abruptly ended this extremely awkward impromptu performance.

"Yo my foot!" Mercury shook his wrist, a vein throbbing on his forehead. "Your voice's recovered, fine, but why are you doing rap?!"

Blackie was slapped so hard he turned his head to the side, but instead of being angry, he was so excited his whole body was trembling: "Sorry, I'm Black, and my dream used to be to be a rap performance artist! I never thought my voice would actually be healed! My dream has come back! This is amazing, what kind of superpower is this?!"

All I can say is that this big black guy really has some talent; his speaking speed is as fast as a typewriter.

"Your face is fixed too, feel it yourself."

Upon hearing this, Black Egg immediately stretched out his thick hands to touch his face.

The fingertips no longer touched the pitted, festering flesh and misaligned nodules, but smooth skin and a complete jawline. The lip that had been missing for five years had once again covered the gums.

Although he is still a bit ugly, he has a normal appearance for a Black person, and at least he doesn't make people feel disgusted.

"My face... my face is all healed!" Black Egg's voice cracked with extreme excitement. "Oh my god! My teeth have all grown back—"

"Ugh!" Mercury reacted quickly, covering his mouth tightly and forcibly silencing the rest of his exclamation.

"Shut up! Do you want to call the prison guards over again? If you shout again, I'll smash your head in again!"

Black Egg was so frightened that it nodded frantically like a chick pecking at rice.

Mercury then released his grip, grabbing the man's prison uniform collar and pulling him up, warning in a low voice, "I've healed your face. But if anyone asks, just say your superpower suddenly mutated and healed itself."

"Why?" Black Egg asked in astonishment, his face covered in blood but unharmed. "How could I forget your kindness to me?"

"Because I'm afraid someone will sue me for practicing medicine without a license and sentence me to ten years in prison." Mercury's expression was anything but joking.

In this country, illegally providing medical services is not only a serious crime, but also directly touches the raw nerve of monopolistic medical groups.

Mercury had read a file in his father's investigative reports when he was young—there was once a superhero with extremely strong healing abilities who refused a high-paying "consultant" position offered by a private group hospital and insisted on treating the poor on the street at extremely low prices.

Superpowers can cure diseases without the need for expensive special drugs or complicated surgical instruments.

Less than a year later, a meticulously orchestrated fake "medical malpractice" case landed this hero in the dock. A lawsuit for practicing medicine without a license sentenced him to a full twelve years in prison, where he's still knitting sweaters to this day.

Since then, the Hero Act has been forced to be revised: all healing superpower users, unless they are "first aiders", are absolutely prohibited from performing any medical intervention on ordinary patients without obtaining a medical license.

In the words of Mercury's father, being able to extract "emergency medical exemption" from the mouths of capital was already the limit of compromise between the two sides.

Black Egg's five-year-old facial fracture, even with broken bones, doesn't meet the criteria for "emergency treatment." If it's discovered, the trouble will be considerable.

"So, keep your mouth shut. Anyway, nobody can explain the mutation of superpowers. If you insist it's your own healing, nobody can argue with that."

Black Egg nodded repeatedly; he would never tell anyone about this, even if it meant his life.

"By the way, what's your name? Black Egg is the nickname they gave you, right?" Mercury asked.

Black Egg quickly said, "My name is Leonardo, Leonardo Tom Cruise."

Mercury: ...

Looking at his appearance, it's likely that he got beaten up for more than just his looks.

Mercury, however, was too lazy to complain and urged, "Now, show me your abilities. You can connect to the internet out of thin air, right?"

Black Egg nodded quickly and said, "Yes, yes, that's all I know. I really have absolutely no fighting ability."

As Black Egg spoke, he manipulated his abilities to reproject the screen. However, to keep the light from being too obvious, this time he projected a mobile phone screen, which even had all the necessary functions.

Mercury tried touching it with his finger, and it actually felt like a touchscreen.

"Wow, that's impressive. Your superpower is really useful."

Black Egg remarked, "Thank you. I do wish I had some powerful superpowers, at least enough to fight back."

Mercury casually remarked, "It's not that difficult. Since you can manipulate light so precisely to condense it into a screen, can't you condense all that light into a single point? Have you ever seen a magnifying glass? You can ignite a newspaper by placing it in the sun. The power of light concentrated into a single point is immense."

Black Egg stared wide-eyed, his newly repaired eyes wide, and said in shock, "This... how come I didn't think of that?"

The large, dark-skinned man instinctively tried to shrink the screen, but Mercury quickly said, "You can practice later; I need to go online now!"

"Oh, sorry, please feel free to use the internet, sir."

Mercury opened TUTA, the most popular short video website, and after scrolling through it a few times, he found that it was full of content related to him.
