Why is his holy light red?
Chapter 19 My Beast-like Roommate
A screeching sound of metal scraping rang out, and Mercury watched as the iron door of the cell was closed.
Escorted by the correctional officer Morgan, he finally arrived at his cell, where he had changed into an orange prison uniform.
The environment isn't great because the space is small, and the toilet is exposed at the head of the bed. If you sleep on the lower bunk, you'll have to face the toilet.
Even from a distance, you can still smell a slightly strange odor.
There was nothing but a bed and a toilet; there wasn't even a stool.
There's no way to complain about going to jail.
The Morgan correctional officer stared at Mercury and threatened, "Kid, you wait, you don't have that kind of luck every day."
Mercury ignored this pointless threat. This Morgan was clearly very confident in his superpowers; even after witnessing Mercury's power, he still felt that "the advantage was in my hands."
Mercury didn't bother arguing with him. There had been too many messy things happening today, and he needed some time to think things through.
He doesn't regret losing control of his emotions and getting himself into prison; after all, superpowers are meant to be used.
In this crazy modern society where lunatics roam the streets and prophets, fortune tellers, and mind mediums abound, it's a pipe dream to hide one's awakened superpowers forever. Therefore, Mercury had long been prepared for his superpowers and even his true identity to be exposed.
I never expected that I would go from being a prisoner to an undercover agent working for the warden in the blink of an eye; the change was really fast.
Perhaps it's like that inspirational quote I heard in my past life: gold will always shine; as long as there's a little bit of sunlight, it's hard for others to miss it.
Mercury's current problem is to first win over his roommate.
The empty cell had bunk beds, but his cellmate was nowhere to be seen.
The privileges granted by Erin Channing were obtained through clandestine means, and this roommate, who lived right next to her, was a huge potential threat in order to secretly enjoy these privileges.
"I hope it's not some idiot who needs a good beating to understand human speech."
Just as Mercury finished making his decision, the indicator light on the electronic door lock turned from red to green and beeped, and the heavy iron door slid open to the side again.
A huge, oppressive black shadow instantly blocked out all the light from the corridor's overhead lights.
Mercury raised his head, his gaze traveling up the other man's waist, and his heart sank.
For the first time in reality, he witnessed how human senses could develop into such a restricted disaster scene.
The man was definitely close to 2.2 meters tall, with thick fat hanging on his massive frame like fermented dough. His face was covered with old, raised scars resembling centipedes, making him physically disfigured.
Most shockingly, a large chunk of skin and flesh was clearly missing from his upper lip, exposing his dark red gums and uneven yellow teeth to the air.
Just by looking at its appearance, it looks exactly like an ogre that stepped out of a post-apocalyptic movie.
Where's the pretty roommate I was promised? I could accept a handsome and delicate-looking boy or girl, but what's with this 200-pound humanoid monster?
"Hello...new...roommate..."
A cracked voice, like a leaky bellows, squeezed out of that toothless mouth, with chilling pauses and eerie tones.
Mercury sighed inwardly and stood up straight from the bed.
On the back of his hand, red holy light seeped out like a viscous fluid, quickly enveloping his entire fist.
Since they were going to be working under the same roof, a show of force was a necessary step. Mercury mentally assessed the beast's size; its fat was probably more resilient than a tank's armor, meaning he'd have to exert seven-tenths of his strength to defeat it.
"I've seen plenty of cheesy prison movies," Mercury said, standing still, his gaze calm as still water. "So I know exactly what's going to happen. New recruits, a simple initiation ceremony, deciding who gets the top bunk with their fists, or who gets to decide when to poop... it's all pretty much the same anyway. So, stop wasting time on that pretentious nonsense, let's get started!"
As he finished speaking, he pulled his clenched fist back slightly, leaving a scarlet trail in the dimly lit cell.
The "humanoid monster" opposite him twitched violently, its pupils focusing on the glowing fist, its already small eyes instantly squeezing into slits.
Immediately afterwards, his thick fingers twitched violently twice in front of his chest.
A high-frequency electrical sound rang out, and a large halo of light suddenly ripped out of the air, quickly stretching out a semi-transparent light curtain in mid-air between the two people.
Mercury instantly lowered his center of gravity, his nerves taut like a bowstring.
Superpowers come in all shapes and sizes. Don't be fooled by its appearance as a multimedia holographic projection. It might actually be a cross-dimensional portal, where a bald-haired old man and a round-headed child could jump out the next second and start shooting deadly lasers at him.
However, as Mercury was on high alert, a row of dazzling words scrolled and flashed on the cyberpunk-style light screen:
[Please don't hit me! Please, brother! Don't hit me! I didn't mean any harm!!!]
Mercury's fist, which was at seven-tenths full of power, was abruptly suspended in mid-air.
He lifted his eyelids in disbelief and looked at the grotesque, mangled face that looked as if it had just devoured someone.
As a result, I saw that those cloudy eyes were filled with tears, as if they were about to cry at any moment.
Is this some kind of ultimate psychological warfare? To lower people's guard, even this face, which looks like it's from Resident Evil, can portray such a melodramatic and fragile feeling?!
Before Mercury could fully comprehend this absurd scene, the dazzling text on the screen instantly refreshed, this time with a frantically flashing pink border: [Please don't hit me! The warden sent me! I have the ability to connect to the electronic network! I can help you get online! I really don't mean any harm, I'm not a bad person!]
Mercury looked at the humanoid monster in front of him, which was over two meters tall, had a mouthful of yellow teeth, and was crying like a two-hundred-pound aggrieved fat man. Then he looked down at the domineering red light on his fist, which was extremely destructive.
Mercury was speechless. This Black Olive Prison truly produced a wealth of talent.
Mercury withdrew the red holy light from his hand, but he did not let his guard down. Holy light energy still flowed within his body to deal with any possible sneak attacks.
He asked cautiously, "What happened to your face?"
With a face that looks like it was just pulled out of a meat grinder, it's no wonder that people's first reaction is to strike first.
A slight hissing sound of electricity emanated from the light screen in mid-air, and the image rapidly refreshed, displaying several lines of highlighted, bold black text with exclamation marks:
[They were all beaten into submission!!!]
Every new inmate shoved into this cell thought I looked the most dangerous. Every troublemaker trying to establish dominance in the cell made me their first target. My facial bones have been shattered multiple times, and my vocal cords are practically ruined from being choked so many times… But I… I really can't fight!
Two streams of tears finally flowed out.
A giant man, over two meters tall and weighing over two hundred kilograms, with double doors, was hunched over, crying like a wronged child.
For the first time in his life, Mercury felt a sense of guilt similar to that of "bullying the weak."
"Alright, let's settle this." Mercury pressed his temples, steer the conversation back on track, "So, what crime did you commit to be thrown in here?"
When asked this, the "humanoid monster's" thick chest heaved violently, letting out a few mournful whimpers.
The light screen in mid-air exploded, displaying a screen full of wildly scrolling crying emojis, with lines of aggrieved text popping out:
They accused me of illegal internet access, claiming I watched over 300 hours of paid, encrypted adult content from overseas! The judge ordered me to pay the film company 50,000 yuan in copyright fees… I can't even pay my rent, where am I supposed to get 50,000 yuan from them! And then I got arrested!
Mercury: ...
He had heard and witnessed many stories about the "cutting line" (a metaphor for the danger of being caught), but this was the first time he had ever seen someone get arrested and imprisoned for secretly watching adult programs.
This guy is a real talent.
Mercury exhaled a slightly weary breath and asked again, "What's your name?"
The crying face on the screen disappeared, and a few bold characters appeared neatly: 【They all call me Black Egg.】
"Alright, Black Egg." Mercury's gaze returned to the face that looked like it had been pulled from a meat grinder. "When was the first time you got these scars on your face?"
The giant, over two meters tall, seemed somewhat bewildered, not understanding why Mercury had asked this, but still answered honestly. "Five years and eight months ago, on my first day in prison."
"More than five years..." Mercury estimated for a moment, "That's alright, not too long. I should be able to cure it."
As soon as he finished speaking, he slowly raised his right hand.
The red holy light that had been hidden beneath the skin seeped out again from the lines of the palm.
This time, however, the light no longer possessed that extremely destructive sharpness; instead, it coalesced into a gentle energy body, radiating a strange heat.
Mercury stared intently into the black egg's bloodshot, fearful eyes, his expression extremely serious.
"Black Egg, are you willing to believe me?"
