Chapter 3 Fortune Telling for Dai Li

While Wei Renming was still in a daze, Wang Zhaohuai, standing beside Dai Li, whispered sharply, "Answer the question!"

Wang Zhaohuai was thirty years old. He graduated from the fourth class of the Infantry Department of the Whampoa Military Academy and was serving as the captain of the reconnaissance brigade at the time.

"N-no, I don't know him." Cold sweat broke out on Wei Renming's forehead, and he knew something was wrong.

He realized that if he couldn't explain why he looked surprised when he saw Dai Li, given the latter's suspicious nature, he would definitely not have a good ending.

Dai Li wiped his nose with a handkerchief, his smile concealing a dagger: "Why did you freeze up when you saw me just now?"

"I……"

Wei Renming suddenly recalled information he had read in his previous life, which stated that Dai Li was extremely superstitious about fate. He also remembered that the original owner's deceased grandfather was a fortune teller. With a plan in mind, he spoke:

"I was stunned because I saw that your appearance was not that of an ordinary person."

As far as he knew, Dai Li's original name was Dai Chunfeng. He changed his name to Dai Li and took the courtesy name Yu Nong because a fortune teller said that he lacked the element of water in his five elements.

And you know what? This change really did bring about a turn of good fortune.

"Oh? You can read faces?" Dai Li smiled, but inwardly he became increasingly wary.

"I studied physiognomy with my grandfather for a few years." Wei Renming was a man who talked a lot of nonsense, and he was also quite quick-witted. After the initial panic, he already had a draft in mind.

"Was your grandfather a fortune teller?" Dai Li pressed.

"Yes, he taught me the 'Ma Yi Physiognomy' when I was a child."

In his previous life, Wei Renming's maternal grandfather was indeed a wandering sorcerer.

When he was a child, his maternal grandfather taught him physiognomy in a serious manner.

"This book certainly exists." Dai Li pondered for a moment, then said, "Tell me, what does my face look like?"

"This..." Wei Renming pretended to be embarrassed.

"Can't you see it?" Dai Li's eyes turned cold.

"Your Excellency may not know this, but before my grandfather passed away, he established a family precept, admonishing his descendants never to perform divination or fortune-telling for others," Wei Renming said deliberately.

"Why is that?" Dai Li clearly did not believe this explanation.

Wei Renming said with grief, "My father was always strong and healthy, but he suddenly fell seriously ill at the age of thirty and passed away in just two days. According to my grandfather, this was because he revealed too many heavenly secrets, which brought misfortune to his descendants. My father passed away only half a year later, and my grandfather also passed away."

These words are half true and half false.

The original owner's grandfather and father did indeed pass away.

His claims about bringing disaster upon his descendants and the importance of family precepts were merely improvisations on the spot.

"So, you're saying you're unwilling to read my fortune?" Dai Li asked expressionlessly.

"It is truly a matter of family precepts, which I dare not disobey. If I were to force myself to do so, I would surely be punished by Heaven. I hope you will understand," Wei Renming feigned refusal.

No sooner had the words been spoken than a clear, crisp sound rang out.

Wang Zhaohuai cocked his pistol, pointed it at Wei Renming, and said mockingly:

"Since you can tell fortunes, why don't you tell us whether divine retribution or a bullet will arrive first?"

Dai Li stared at Wei Renming, observing his reaction.

Wei Renming was startled. Staring at the dark muzzle of the gun, his legs went weak and he almost knelt down.

It's not that he's faking it; which carbon-based life form isn't afraid of this thing?

He wiped the sweat from his brow, forced a smile, and pleaded, "Why must you press me so hard, sir?"

Wang Zhaohuai stepped forward, slapped the former's face, and said disdainfully, "Letting you tell my fortune is giving you face. If you don't agree after three counts, I'll send you on your way. Three, two..."

Wei Renming gritted his teeth, lowered his head, and sighed, "Alas, this is truly an undeserved disaster. Fine, I agree, won't I?"

Only then did Wang Zhaohuai reveal a satisfied smile, unload his gun, and step back to stand behind Dai Li.

Dai Li ordered, "Zhao Huai, stay here. The rest of you, leave."

The crowd moved at the sound.

After the prison door was closed, Dai Li approached Wei Renming, bowed slightly, and said, "Thank you for your trouble."

"You flatter me." Wei Renming returned the greeting, then stared at Dai Li for a long time before exclaiming in amazement, "Truly, he has the countenance of a person of extraordinary nobility, one in a million."

"Oh? Tell me more." Dai Li became interested.

After considering for a moment, Wei Renming spoke:

"Sir, your forehead is high and broad, and your bone structure is unique; this is the sign of hidden wisdom."

According to physiognomy books, a horse-faced person is destined for great wealth and a bright future.

The book of physiognomy also says that those with thick, dark, sword-like eyebrows are capable of commanding thousands of troops.

Furthermore, your nose is straight and prominent, like a truncated tube, which indicates that you will surely have great wealth.

"Sir, your appearance is one of immeasurable nobility and unfathomable power. You are destined to be a pillar of strength, a beam spanning the sea, with limitless potential!"

Dai Li was pleased to hear this, but his suspicions only grew stronger. He suddenly shouted, "How dare you, you brat, deceive me!"

Wei Renming's heart tightened, and he quickly said:

"Please calm down, sir. After my mother passed away, I made a solemn vow never to tell a lie, so why would I deceive you?"

He's started setting goals.

"Ha, who would believe that?" Dai Li roared. "Your words just now were nothing but baseless nonsense, utterly empty talk, without a single word of truth. You might fool some naive commoner, but you dare to try and deceive me?"

"Snapped!"

Before Wei Renming could explain, Wang Zhaohuai stepped forward and slapped him hard across the face. Wei's cheek immediately swelled up and blood trickled from the corner of his mouth.

"Say it again, if this doesn't come to fruition, I'll kill you," Wang Zhaohuai threatened sharply, grabbing Wei Renming by the collar.

"I'm afraid I can't escape this calamity. Oh well, now that things have come to this, I have no choice but to show my true skills." Wei Renming looked dejected and sighed a few times before turning to Dai Li and saying, "May I humbly request that you extend your left palm for me to see?"

Dai Li remained silent and handed it over with his left hand.

Wei Renming pretended to examine it for a moment, then said:

"The palm resonates with a golden sound, and the lines exude a crimson aura. A wind rises from the south, bringing great fortune to you, sir."

He wasn't making baseless accusations.

In about twenty days, the Liangguang Incident will break out.

Because of his meritorious service in causing trouble during the incident, Dai Li gained face in front of Chiang Kai-shek and became increasingly trusted by him.

With a grasp of historical trends, adding a few obscure technical terms makes it easy to fool people.

"south?"

Dai Li's expression changed slightly.

Although the situation in Guangdong and Guangxi was not yet confirmed, he had already gotten wind of it.

But how could this country boy know about such a confidential matter?

Was it really calculated? Or does he have another identity and is just playing a trick?

For a moment, Dai Li was unable to tell the difference.

What does it mean for the wind to rise from the south?

Wei Renming pleaded for mercy, saying, "I have already revealed the secrets of heaven. If I continue, there is no need for you to execute me; I will surely die on the spot."

If an atheist were to hear his argument, they would simply laugh it off.

However, if the listener is superstitious, then that's a different story.

Dai Li made no comment, only glancing at Wei Renming before leading Wang Zhaohuai out of the interrogation room.

Wei Renming spat out a mouthful of bloody saliva and rubbed his swollen cheeks. Before he could relax for a moment, the cell door was violently pushed open, and Chen Zhiqiang led two men in.

"Zhang Zhihe has confessed, so you're practically worthless now." Chen Zhiqiang sat in his chair, leisurely crossing his legs.

"Who is Zhang Zhihe?" Wei Renming was tied to the rack, his limbs fixed, unable to move.

"Looks like you won't shed a tear until you see the coffin?" Chen Zhiqiang waved his hand, and one of his men immediately picked up a red-hot branding iron and walked towards Wei Renming.

"Tell me! Who did you give the film roll to?"
