Espionage: I Have Photo Editing Software

Chapter 2 Unexpected Disaster

Seeing this, Wei Renming dared not tell the truth and could only bite the bullet and say:

"Brother, I just happened to be passing by and came in to take a look. I didn't plan to take any pictures today."

"Liar!" Chen Zhiqiang roared. "Judging from your clothes, you're not poor. If you didn't live nearby, how could you only have so little money on you when you came to Jinling Road for shopping?"

Although Chen Zhiqiang looks fierce, his logic is surprisingly meticulous.

Where had Wei Renming ever experienced such a situation?

For a moment, I didn't know how to explain it.

Chen Zhiqiang shouted:

"Speak! What's your name, where do you live, and where do you work? If you dare tell a single lie, I guarantee you'll wish you were dead!"

Faced with a series of problems.

Wei Renming was stunned!

The original owner came from a poor family and had fled from the countryside of Funing to Shanghai at the beginning of the year to look for relatives.

He did manage to find his relatives, but his sister was too busy taking care of herself to help him.

When the original owner was starving and destitute, he was fortunate to receive help from his fellow villagers, who introduced him to a photography studio as an apprentice.

The apprentices are provided with three meals a day, but they receive no salary.

Customers only tip a small amount of money when they send photos.

After Wei Renming transmigrated, he used all three silver dollars that the original owner had saved up to buy clothes.

Now, if he answers the questions truthfully, how can we explain his motivation for doing so?

If you lie and are caught without knowing the other person's identity, what should you do?

"explain!"

Chen Zhiqiang lost his patience and threatened him with a dagger.

Wei Renming gritted his teeth and said:

"My name is Wei Renming, I'm from Funing, and I'm an apprentice at the Meiyin Photo Studio on Avenue Joffre in the French Concession. The studio's phone number is 28856. You can verify it if you don't believe me. I came to Jinling Road because I'm looking for a photo studio to work as a photographer."

Seven parts truth, three parts falsehood—that was the best explanation he could come up with in a short time.

Chen Zhiqiang gave his subordinate a look, and the latter understood, picked up the landline receiver on the counter, and dialed a number.

After the call was connected, the subordinate did not speak immediately, but waited for the other party to speak first.

"American-Indian Photo Studio," came the voice from the receiver.

The subordinate pretended to be angry and said:

"How many days has it been? Why haven't the photos been delivered yet?"

"Excuse me! The photos will be sent over as soon as they are developed. May I ask your name?" the photo shop clerk asked.

"I live on Xier Road. The apprentice in your shop knows me. His name is Wei, Wei something?" the subordinate asked tentatively.

"Wei Renming? He's the only one in our photo studio with the surname Wei," the clerk said.

"Yes, that's him. Have him bring the photos over as soon as they're developed..."

After hanging up the phone, the subordinate whispered:

"Team leader, there is indeed a person named him at the photo studio."

Chen Zhiqiang glanced at Wei Renming and sneered, "I don't care about your background, your presence here makes you the prime suspect!"

Wei Renming was confused, but instinctively sensed something was wrong. While racking his brains for a way to escape, he was knocked unconscious from behind.

Lin Yi also couldn't escape this fate.

Chen Zhiqiang gave the order:

"Search again, make sure it's completely clean! If we can't find it, we're all in deep trouble."

"yes!"

The search ended about twenty minutes later.

"Team leader, we didn't find anything..." The men looked grim.

Chen Zhiqiang dusted off his hands, looked at the messy photo studio, and frowned.

"We didn't find it in the house, and we didn't find it in the shop either. It seems our worst fears have come true; the film reels have most likely been moved."

"What should we do, team leader?" The men shuddered at the thought of the consequences of losing the film rolls.

"Now that things have come to this, we can only try to get Zhang Zhihe to talk." A fierce glint flashed in Chen Zhiqiang's eyes. In order to protect himself, he did not mind choosing to take drastic measures.

Zhang Zhihe is Lin Yi's uncle and the owner of the photo studio.

"What should we do with these two?" the subordinate asked, pointing at Wei Renming and Lin Yi.

"Take the woman back; we can use her to force Zhang Zhihe to comply. The man... take him too. In a critical moment, it's better to kill the innocent than let the guilty go free."

The men left the photo studio, brought over two rickshaws, opened the studio doors, quickly shoved Wei Renming and his companion into the seats, and sped off towards the Chinese border.

Chen Zhiqiang followed behind on his bicycle.

Around 3 o'clock, the group arrived at an old courtyard near Nanshi Railway Station South Road.

The courtyard was built by the Qing dynasty and occupies a considerable area with more than a dozen rooms, but it is quite old.

Wei Renming and Lin Yi were imprisoned in a specially modified room.

The windows in the walls were all sealed off.

The only exit is equipped with two iron gates, one inside and one outside, and is guarded by dedicated personnel.

After giving a brief instruction to "keep a close watch," Chen Zhiqiang hurriedly went to the outside of a house, sighed, and knocked on the door.

"Go in," Qin Chengzhi said in a muffled voice.

Chen Zhiqiang pushed open the door and entered. After explaining the situation, he cautiously said:

"Secretary Qin, the film reels haven't been found; they must have been moved!"

Qin Chengzhi is 37 years old. He was born in the 25th year of the Guangxu Emperor's reign (1899). He is from Hunan Province and is a key member of the Special Service Department. He participated in the establishment of the Shanghai Station.

Last year, when Wang Xinheng served as the head of the Shanghai District of the Special Service Department, he was promoted from assistant secretary to district secretary of the Shanghai District, making him the de facto second-in-command.

"Old Chen, you're a veteran of the Special Service. If you mess up the job, District Chief Wang and I will be punished, but we won't be seriously injured. But you're already a criminal. The director is giving you a chance; if you don't seize it, I'm afraid..."

Chen Zhiqiang graduated from the third class of the Infantry Department of the Whampoa Military Academy and had a long tenure in the Special Service Department.

However, this man was extremely greedy and was once imprisoned by Dai Li for embezzling funds and his subordinates' salaries. He was later released and appointed as the head of the Nanshi intelligence group because of the urgent need for manpower when the Shanghai station was being built.

"Don't worry, Secretary Qin, I will definitely get Zhang Zhihe to talk and get the film back." Chen Zhiqiang made up his mind that if things didn't work out, he would run away immediately. He wasn't going to be stupid enough to wait to be stabbed.

Qin Chengzhi stubbed out his cigarette and said:

"The district chief has given the order, and the other five intelligence teams will also do their utmost to track down the whereabouts of the film rolls."

But don't get your hopes up too high.

After all, it was your team members who betrayed you first, giving the enemy an opportunity to take advantage.

More than five hours have passed since Zhang Zhihe was arrested.

Time is running out, hurry up.

"Yes."

After leaving the room, Chen Zhiqiang immediately ordered his team members to take Wei Renming and Lin Yi and head towards the Songhu Garrison Command in the northern part of Longhua Town.

Several years ago, after Wu Naixian of the Special Service first served as the colonel and captain of the reconnaissance brigade of the Songhu Garrison Command, this force began to be used by the Special Service.

Many of the arrested prisoners, in addition to being transferred to Nanjing, were detained in the Longhua Detention Center on the east side of the headquarters compound. Zhang Zhihe was also detained there after his arrest.

More than forty minutes later.

The group arrived at the Songhu Garrison Command.

Wei Renming and Lin Yi were each detained in an interrogation room.

As evening fell, the iron door to the interrogation room was opened, and a middle-aged man with a long face and dark complexion walked in, surrounded by several people.

When Wei Renming saw the man's face clearly, his head suddenly went blank, and he looked astonished.

Noticing Wei Renming's expression, the man asked in a heavily nasal voice, "You know me?"

It would be difficult for Wei Renming not to know him.

Before he traveled through time, he loved watching spy dramas and had also researched that period of history.

The horse-faced man before them was none other than Dai Li, the top secret service chief of the Republic of China.

In that instant, Wei Renming felt as if the wheels of history had suddenly rolled over his face.

"If those who arrested Lin Yi were agents of the Special Service, doesn't that mean she's highly likely a Communist?"
