The Three Teachings Converge into One: The Path of the Mortal and the Saintly is the Same
Chapter 61 Debate with the Sages: Test of Skill and Fellow Cultivators Reveal True Significance
Poetry:
At the beginning of the Dharma assembly, the truth of the Way was debated, and the three teachings challenged and knocked on the door of the heart.
Eloquent words and lotus blossoms return to the same principle; the winds of change rise again, revealing the marks of a sword's edge.
At Chen Shi (7-9 AM), when the sky was just beginning to lighten, dozens of auspicious clouds had already gathered in the sky.
These auspicious clouds are of various colors, some gold, some blue, and some white.
They all carried cultivators from various regions who were heading to the Three Realms Heaven to participate in the Dharma Assembly.
Su Qingxuan was dressed in a blue scholar's robe, wearing a lotus crown and a gentleman's sword at his waist.
Standing atop a patch of auspicious blue clouds, he exuded composure.
Behind him stood the four fairies: Lin Wanqing, Xiao Lingxi, Xiao Lingyue, and Chi Ying.
Each was dressed in their own sect's attire, standing on either side; some were gentle, some lively, and some otherworldly.
His heroic spirit drew frequent glances from the surrounding cultivators.
Kong Shen flew out from the Heavenly Gate on a cloud and saw that Su Qingxuan and his group of five had already arrived.
He stroked his beard and smiled, "Junior Brother Su, you've arrived quite early. All the fairies have also come."
Perfect, perfect.
Behind him followed three Wenrutian elders, all of whom were Great Luo Golden Immortals.
He bowed to Su Qingxuan with a friendly expression.
"Greetings, Senior Brother Kong, and greetings to the three elders."
Su Qingxuan and the four women returned the greeting.
Kong Shen said, "It's getting late, let's set off now."
The Three Realms Heaven is eighteen levels away from here, requiring passage through several spatial barriers.
I will explain the details of the Dharma assembly to you on the way.
The group rode the clouds and flew into the sky.
The thirty-three heavens of the celestial realm are not simply layers stacked on top of each other.
Instead, it is distributed according to special spatial laws. Wenru Heaven is in the thirty-third layer.
The Three Realms Heaven is at the fifteenth level; one must descend through eighteen more heavenly realms.
Each level of heaven requires passing through a spatial barrier.
The barrier rippled like water; as one passed through it...
The surrounding scenery was distorted and shifting, with galaxies sometimes appearing upside down.
Sometimes one sees fairy mountains and floating islands, which are magnificent and wonderful.
During the flight, Kong Shen whispered to Su Qingxuan:
"For this Dharma assembly, all three ancestral temples of religions sent important figures."
On Wenrutian's side, Elder Yan Wen, the "Resurrected Saint," was leading the team.
He was the eldest disciple of the Celestial Venerable Wenru, and had already reached the peak of the Great Luo Golden Immortal realm.
He was only half a step away from becoming a saint.
The Three Pure Ones are the "Jade Purity True Man" and Grand Master Xuandu.
The chief disciple of Taiqing Tianzun, and also a peak Daluo Jinxian (Great Luo Golden Immortal).
He was, without a doubt, a near-saint.
The Pure Land of Bliss is home to Upati, the Venerable One, who is "foremost in wisdom" and is the Buddha's chief disciple.
They were both at the peak of the Great Luo Golden Immortal realm.
These three are the presiding officers of this Dharma assembly.
Su Qingxuan nodded and noted it down.
Kong Shen then said, "Besides the ancestral temples of the three religions,
Representatives were sent by virtually all the prominent forces in the celestial realm.
Wang Lingguan, a subordinate of the Wuqu Tianzhenwu Emperor
Bluebird Messenger under the Queen Mother of the West
White Tiger General under the command of Emperor Gouchen...
You need to pay attention to these things.
However, those who need the most caution are the conservatives and those who have already benefited from the status quo.
He pointed to several auspicious clouds in the distance: "Look, those people have arrived too..."
That dark cloud, upon which dwells Yu Xiaozhi, is followed by more than ten people.
They were all key figures in the conservative faction of Taoism.
That red cloud represents the monk Fayan, who led the lineage of Dharma protectors from the Little Thunderclap Temple.
That golden cloud belonged to Meng Xingjian, the deputy head of the Lisheng Hall.
In charge of Confucian etiquette and punishments.
These three individuals are not particularly dangerous, but behind them...
Standing there were the powerful figures from the three religions who controlled resources.
They will definitely take action during today's Dharma assembly.
Su Qingxuan looked in the direction he was pointing and indeed saw three auspicious clouds above.
Yu Xiaozi, Fa Yan, and Meng Xingjian were gathered together, talking in hushed tones.
He kept glancing this way with an unfriendly expression.
His expression remained unchanged; he simply nodded slightly.
After flying for about half an hour, the sea of clouds ahead suddenly parted.
A strange and wondrous world appeared.
Three majestic palaces appeared to float in the air in a triangular formation.
One is a golden palace, surrounded by Confucian scriptures;
One is a blue palace, with cranes flying around protecting it;
One is a white palace, bathed in a hazy Buddhist light.
In the center of the three halls lies a plaza paved with white jade, spanning hundreds of miles in circumference.
At this moment, over a thousand cultivators have gathered.
They were divided into dozens of camps, clearly distinct from one another.
"We've arrived at the Three Palaces Square of the Three Realms Heaven."
Kong Shen descended from the clouds, and everyone landed on the ground.
The moment I landed, I felt countless eyes on me.
There was curiosity, scrutiny, disdain, and hostility.
Su Qingxuan appeared calm and composed, accompanied by the four fairies.
He followed Kong Shen to the Wenru Tian camp.
More than a hundred people had gathered there, led by a man dressed in a black scholar's robe.
The elderly man, wearing a scholar's cap, was thin and wiry, with bright, piercing eyes.
It was Yan Wen, the eldest disciple of the Wenru Tianzun and the Resurrected Sage.
"Disciple Su Qingxuan greets Senior Uncle Yan." Su Qingxuan stepped forward and bowed.
The four fairies also performed their respective religious rituals.
Yan Wen smiled and nodded, saying gently, "No need for formalities."
Qingxuan, the Heavenly Venerable has already explained your matter to me in detail.
You are very good!
Don't worry...
I'll go to the Confucian Hall first to make some preparations.
Yan Wen turned to leave, then paused.
Suddenly he said sternly, "At today's Dharma assembly, you may only expound your own doctrine."
There's no need to be timid or hesitant.
Those who are virtuous and reasonable will travel throughout the three realms!
These are the ancestral temples of the three religions.
It's not to the point that petty scoundrels can cover up everything!
The last few words were spoken softly, yet they carried clearly throughout the square.
Many cultivators paled upon hearing this, and Yu Xiaozi and the others' expressions changed slightly.
After Yan Wen finished speaking, he vanished in a flash.
Su Qingxuan felt a warmth in his heart.
He knew that Yan Wen was backing him up.
At that moment, three bells rang out in succession from the three palaces.
Its deep and melodious sound spread throughout heaven and earth.
"The Dharma assembly begins. Please take your seats—"
A grand voice rang out, its origin indistinguishable from any palace.
Yet it carried an unparalleled majesty.
The immortals entered the plaza separately.
Thousands of prayer mats have been set up in the square, arranged in a circular pattern.
The innermost ring contains the ancestral temples of the three religions, while the middle ring houses the major powers of the celestial realm.
The outer ring consists of small and medium-sized forces and independent cultivators.
Su Qingxuan represented the emerging literary and Confucian power.
He was seated next to Wenru Tian's group, and the Four Fairies sat with him.
Everyone took their seats, and then the doors of the three palaces opened simultaneously.
Three figures emerged.
From the golden palace to the east, a scholar in a black robe emerged; it was Yan Wen.
He walked with an elegant and composed gait, reaching the high platform in the center of the square.
He bowed to the four directions and then sat down on the futon on the left.
From the blue palace to the north, a Taoist priest in a blue robe emerged.
Wearing a fish-tail crown, he was handsome and dashing, holding a whisk, yet exuding an air of otherworldly elegance.
This person is the representative of the Three Pure Ones Heaven—Grand Master Xuandu.
He nodded slightly to the crowd and sat down on the central prayer mat.
A monk in a yellow robe emerged from the white palace to the west.
His face was like a full moon, his earlobes reached his shoulders, he held a nine-ringed staff, and his whole body was surrounded by a faint Buddhist light.
This is Upati, the representative of the Pure Land of Bliss.
He put his hands together, chanted a Buddhist mantra, and sat down on the prayer mat on the right.
Three peak-level Grand Luo Golden Immortals sat together on the high platform.
The oppressive aura emanated naturally, and the square fell silent instantly.
Grand Master Xuandu spoke, "The Three Teachings Dharma Assembly, which takes place once every five hundred years..."
This time, the Three Pure Ones are in charge. I, Xuandu, am honored to be the presiding priest.
Together with fellow Daoists Yan Wen and You Bodi, we presided over the ceremony.
Greetings, everyone who has traveled a long way.
Yan Wen continued, "The agenda of the Dharma assembly has three parts:"
First, the rules and rewards for the "Celestial Grand Competition" were discussed;
Secondly, to delineate the religious landscape of the lower realm for the next five hundred years;
Thirdly, the major disputes among the three schools of arbitration in recent years.
As is customary, free speech and debate are permitted on each agenda item.
The final decision was made jointly by the ancestral temples of the three religions.
Venerable Upati slowly said, "Amitabha! Private fights are forbidden in the Dharma assembly area."
If there is a dispute, one can go to the debate platform to discuss the merits of the argument.
Anyone who violates this rule will be expelled by all three religions.
After the three hosts finished speaking, the Dharma assembly officially began.
The first item on the agenda was to discuss the Heavenly Grand Competition.
This celestial competition is a grand event for the three religions to select outstanding disciples.
Every five hundred years, the winner receives a generous reward.
Furthermore, one can enter the secret realms of the three religions to cultivate.
In the past, the three religions would each set questions to test their own disciples.
However, this time, Sanqingtian proposed a reform plan:
Disciples from the three religions competed on the same stage, with the assessment covering the three teachings of Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism.
This suggestion caused an uproar throughout the room!
Yu Xiaozi was the first to stand up. Although his words were respectful, he strongly objected:
"Grandmaster Xuandu, this disciple is not questioning the decision of our Daoist ancestral court, but rather..."
However, this disciple believes... this suggestion is indeed inappropriate!
He paused, as if considering his words, or perhaps encouraging himself:
"In my opinion, the three religions have different methods and different standards for assessment."
How can we compete on the same stage? Do you expect me, a disciple of Taoism, to be tested on Confucian classics?
Are they asking Buddhist disciples to cultivate Taoist supernatural powers again? This... this is clearly a bit...
That's asking too much!
Fayan the Ascetic also stood up: "Indeed! We Buddhist disciples cultivate the Dharma."
It is about Zen principles, which is completely different from the Taoist alchemy and talisman drawing, or the Confucian governance and world peace.
To confuse them will only result in something neither fish nor fowl!
Meng Xingjian bowed respectfully, his manners impeccable, yet his words carried a hidden meaning:
I dare not make any malicious speculations about Senior Xuandu's remarks.
However, it is common knowledge in the celestial realm that the Three Pure Ones Heaven has produced a great many talented individuals in recent years.
If the three religions are examined together, most Taoist disciples will only have a superficial understanding of Confucianism and Buddhism.
They will surely crush Confucian and Buddhist disciples who specialize in one method.
"In such a grand competition... this junior can only offer my congratulations to the Daoist sect for achieving the top honor."
The Grand Master Xuandu was extremely well-mannered; upon hearing the three people's doubts,
He remained silent throughout, his kind brows furrowed, and a smile playing on his lips.
There are also supporters.
A female immortal under the tutelage of the Queen Mother of the West rose and said:
"I think this method is quite good."
If disciples of the three religions only know the methods of their own religion, their vision will be too narrow.
By cultivating all three methods and learning from each other's strengths to make up for their weaknesses, one can achieve the Great Way.
Moreover, the Celestial Grand Competition is, in essence, for selecting outstanding talents.
If one doesn't even have the magnanimity to cultivate all three methods, what kind of talent is that?
One of the divine generals under the command of Emperor Gouchen also said:
"Indeed! I have heard that there is a sage named Su Qingxuan in the lower realm, who cultivates the three religions simultaneously."
He created a path that combined the three religions, and his cultivation progressed rapidly.
Therefore, practicing all three methods simultaneously is not only feasible, but also the right path.
The conversation unknowingly drifted to Su Qingxuan.
Before Master Xuandu, Yu Xiaozi lowered his head and looked down, not daring to act presumptuously.
But upon hearing Su Qingxuan's name, they seized the opportunity to launch an attack.
He stood up, pointed at Su Qingxuan, and said loudly:
"Speaking of this 'Sage' Su, perfect timing! I have a question to ask!"
He turned and bowed to the three hosts on the platform:
"The three seniors, according to the rules of the Heavenly Realm, shall establish a Daoist temple, instruct disciples, and spread the Dao."
It requires formal recognition from at least one of the three ancestral temples of religions.
May I ask this "saint" Su, whose "Trinity Palace" is recognized by which religion?
All eyes immediately turned to Su Qingxuan.
Su Qingxuan remained expressionless, slowly rose, bowed to the high platform, and said:
"Qingxuan's Sanyi Palace was built on land bestowed by the Wenru Tianzun (a Confucian deity)."
They received scriptures from the Heavenly Venerable Taiqing and treasures from the Buddha.
Does this count as an admission?
Yu Xiaozi sneered: "Giving land, bestowing scriptures, bestowing treasures..."
It's just that the senior appreciates the junior.
How can this be confused with formally recognizing the orthodox tradition?
According to the laws of the heavens, for a newly emerging orthodox tradition to gain recognition, it must pass the "Questioning and Argumentation among the Three Teachings."
Each of the three ancestral temples of the three religions would set a test, and only those who passed all three could be considered orthodox.
Su Qingxuan, have you accepted the challenge?
Upon hearing this, many people secretly frowned.
These three teachings' questions are the most rigorous tests in Heaven.
In the ten thousand years since its establishment, no more than five people have passed through it.
Yu Xiaozi's suggestion at this moment was clearly intended to drive Su Qingxuan into a corner.
Kong Shen stood up as if to speak, but Yan Wen waved his hand slightly, signaling him to calm down.
Yan Wen looked at Su Qingxuan and said gently, "Qingxuan,"
What Yu Xiaozi said is an old precedent, and you have the right to refuse.
You were personally guided by the Celestial Venerable Wenru, and the Sanyi Palace has already registered with the Celestial Venerable Wenru.
The newly established orthodox lineage is now legitimate and justified.
This statement is clearly a defense.
But Su Qingxuan knew that if he backed down today, the Sanyi Palace would forever be regarded as "unorthodox".
The idea of unifying the three religions will also be considered "heretical".
He took a deep breath and bowed to Yan Wen, saying, "Thank you for your kindness, Senior Uncle."
But Seigen is willing to accept the questions.
The entire room fell silent.
Su Qingxuan turned around, faced the crowd, and said loudly:
"The unity of the three religions is the path that Qingxuan sought throughout his life."
Whether this path is orthodox does not depend on Qingxuan's words, but on the Great Dao itself.
Since Fellow Daoist Yuxiaozi has raised a question, Qingxuan will take this opportunity...
I will explain the essence of this doctrine to fellow practitioners of the three religions. I request the ancestral temples of the three religions to set a question!
His voice was clear and resonant, each word distinct, carrying an undeniable firmness.
The four fairies stood behind, all with straight backs and solemn expressions.
She was clearly prepared to stand by him through thick and thin.
On the high platform, the three hosts exchanged a glance.
Grand Master Xuandu clapped his hands and said, "Excellent. Since young friend Su has such spirit..."
Each of the three schools then presented a question.
However, according to custom, the debate must take place on the "debate platform." Young friend Su, would you like to prepare?
"No need, we can start anytime," Su Qingxuan said.
"Very well!" Venerable Upati nodded. "Then let's move to the debating platform."
The crowd rose and, following the three hosts, flew towards the east side of the square.
There stands a white jade platform, a hundred feet in circumference and three feet high.
Four stone pillars stand at the four corners, and the pillars are engraved with scriptures and Taoist patterns.
This is the famous "Debate Platform" in the Three Realms Heaven, specifically set up for debating doctrines and laws.
The platform is equipped with special barriers to prevent external interference and ensure fairness.
Su Qingxuan rode a cloud to the high platform and stood in the center.
The four fairies wanted to follow, but he stopped them with a look. This was his way.
He should handle this alone.
The three hosts flew to the edge of the platform and each took their place on one side.
Yan Wen raised his hand and pointed, and a transparent light screen rose around the debate platform, isolating the inside from the outside.
Grand Master Xuandu said, "According to custom, the three teachings will debate in three rounds."
In the first round, the Confucian school set the questions;
In the second round, the Taoist sect set the questions;
In the third round, the Buddhist sect posed the questions.
Each question has a time limit of one incense stick's worth of time, and answers must be based on Taoist principles.
One must not resort to supernatural means or tricks.
Now let's begin the first round—
A question posed by Confucian scholars!
He looked at Yan Wen: "Brother Yan Wen, please give me a question."
Yan Wen nodded slightly, looking at Su Qingxuan with a gentle and encouraging expression.
But the question was also sharp: "Qingxuan, you advocate the unification of the three religions."
However, the core of Confucianism lies in "benevolence," the core of Taoism lies in "the Way," and the core of Buddhism lies in "emptiness."
Of these three, one emphasizes human relationships, one emphasizes nature, and one emphasizes transcendence.
How can we unify these different sources? Please explain.
This question hit the nail on the head, and all the immortals below listened intently.
Su Qingxuan pondered for a moment, then slowly said, "Uncle Yan's question..."
The question asks whether the three religions (Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism) share a common origin. Qingxuan believes that...
Although the three religions speak differently, their underlying sentiments are the same.
He paused, then spoke in a clear voice: "The Confucian concept of 'benevolence' means 'to help others to establish themselves as one wishes to establish oneself.'"
"To help others achieve what you yourself desire" means to extend your own feelings to others, and it is about loving others.
The Daoist concept of "Dao" is "the Dao follows nature," and "the highest good is like water."
"Water benefits all things and yet remains still," which also means benefiting things and helping people.
In Buddhism, "emptiness" is defined as "emptiness as its essence, existence as its function."
It is "unconditional compassion and universal empathy," and it is about universally saving all sentient beings, relieving their suffering and bringing them joy.
"The Confucian concept of benevolence is loving others; the Daoist concept of the Way is benefiting all things; the Buddhist concept of emptiness is ultimate goodness."
Although the three say different things, isn't their heart all the same: "to save the world and deliver sentient beings"?
Confucianism aims to benefit society by regulating human relationships, while Taoism aims to bring peace and tranquility to the people by following the laws of nature.
Buddhism aims to liberate sentient beings by transcending suffering. The paths may differ, but the goal is the same.
"Furthermore, Confucianism also speaks of the 'Way of Heaven,' and 'Sincerity is the Way of Heaven.'"
Taoism also emphasizes "humanity," stating that "humans follow the earth, the earth follows heaven, heaven follows the Tao, and the Tao follows nature."
The Buddhist tradition also says, "The Buddha is not separate from the world," and "Buddhist teachings are in the world, and enlightenment is not separate from the world."
The Confucian saying goes, "Do as you please without transgressing the rules."
The Taoist saying goes, "All things return to their true nature."
The Buddhist saying goes, "Follow the changes in circumstances, and remain unchanged while adapting to circumstances."
All three religions emphasize worldly spiritual practice and take all sentient beings as their foundation.
How can we say they have different origins?
Su Qingxuan spoke eloquently, quoting extensively from classical texts and effortlessly drawing upon the classics of the three religions.
His voice was calm, yet every word was like a pearl, resonating deeply in everyone's ears.
Many cultivators nodded in agreement.
Yan Wen's eyes showed approval, and he asked again, "If that's the case, after the three religions are unified,
Which should be the primary focus? Confucianism? Taoism? Buddhism?
Su Qingxuan shook his head: "No. The unification of the three teachings does not mean that one teaching is the dominant one."
Instead of annexing other religions, we should seek common ground while reserving differences, and learn from each other's strengths to make up for our weaknesses.
The Confucian school can adopt the Daoist way of nature to compensate for its excessive emphasis on ritual;
Taoism can adopt the essentials of Confucian ethics and human relationships to compensate for its excessive detachment from the world.
Buddhism can adopt the worldly methods of the two religions to compensate for their excessive focus on the afterlife and neglect of the present moment.
In this way, the three teachings complement each other, and only then can the perfect path be achieved.
"As for the methods of cultivation, they can vary from person to person."
Those who prefer tranquility can practice Taoist methods more often;
Those who have the world in their hearts should study Confucianism and Legalism more.
Those who aspire to transcend worldly desires should study Buddhism more.
However, regardless of which method one practices, one must understand the principle that the three teachings (Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism) are interconnected.
Only by abandoning sectarianism can one truly achieve unity.
These words were spoken clearly and logically, and were insightful.
Many Confucian scholars in the audience fell into deep thought.
Even some conservatives showed a change in expression, as if they were about to be swayed.
Yan Wen stroked his beard and smiled: "Excellent. The question is clear. Round one, passed!"
A soft murmur arose from the audience, mostly filled with admiration.
Yu Xiaozi and the others had grim expressions. The Quasi-Sage had given his approval, and they had no way to refute it.
Grand Master Xuandu said, "In the second round, the Taoist sect will pose questions. I will pose one."
He looked at Su Qingxuan, his gaze deep: "Young friend Su,"
Taoism teaches "governing by non-action," which means following the natural order.
Confucianism emphasizes "cultivating oneself, regulating one's family, governing the state, and bringing peace to the world," and actively engages in worldly affairs.
Buddhism teaches "transcending the world to cultivate oneself," meaning to stay away from worldly affairs.
These three are: non-action, action, and transcendence.
How to reconcile them?
If you were the ruler of a region, what law would you use to govern it?
This question is even more tricky, directly pointing to the contradictions among the three religions in practice.
Su Qingxuan remained calm and cupped his hands in greeting, saying, "Sage Xuandu, this question..."
The question concerns the differences in conduct among the three religions.
Qingxuan believed that inaction, action, and detachment from the world are not opposites.
Rather, they are choices made at different levels and in different circumstances.
The Daoist concept of "wuwei" (non-action) does not mean inaction, but rather refraining from reckless or forceful actions.
Follow the natural order of things. Just as a farmer cultivates his land, he must adapt to the four seasons.
This is non-action;
But it is also necessary to cultivate the land and sow seeds; this is what is meant by action.
True non-action is "acting in accordance with the natural order" after understanding the laws of nature.
"The Confucian concept of 'active engagement' refers to the positive construction at the level of humanity."
The way of Heaven is inaction, while the way of humanity is action.
Heaven and earth give birth to all things without speaking; this is the way of Heaven—non-action.
Sages establish rites and music, and legislate laws to educate all people; this is the way of humanity.
The two are two sides of the same coin.
"Buddhist 'renunciation' is not about escaping the mundane world."
Rather, it is about "entering the world to help others" after transcending worldly troubles.
Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva vowed, "I will not become a Buddha until the hells are emptied." What kind of worldly involvement is this?
The Buddhist concept of "leaving the world" refers to leaving behind the world of suffering, not the human world.
In Buddhism, leaving home means leaving the home of the heart, not necessarily abandoning one's family and children.
The choices may be diverse, but their underlying motivations are essentially the same.
The purpose of leaving the world or becoming a monk is actually to better engage with the world and help others.
Su Qingxuan paused for a moment and then said, "As for how to govern a region, what laws should be used?"
Qingxuan believed that one should follow the three levels of "Tao, Fa, Shu".
Taking the Great Way as the foundation, understanding the workings of Heaven and the inclinations of people's hearts, this is the Way;
Using Confucianism and Legalism as a framework, a system of rites and laws and a social order were established; this is the law.
Using Buddhist techniques as a supplement to resolve resentment and purify people's hearts is a technique.
With these three elements combined, this place will be filled with respect for etiquette and virtue, and everyone will sincerely follow the Way, ensuring long-term peace and stability.
Specifically: In governing major policies, one should follow the natural order and not go against the timing of Heaven.
Without expending the people's resources, this is the Taoist principle of non-action;
In specific matters, we should be proactive, promote what is beneficial and eliminate what is harmful, and educate and guide the people.
This demonstrates the effectiveness of Confucianism;
In resolving public grievances and calming people's hearts, we should use compassion and wisdom to guide people towards goodness.
This embodies the Buddhist mindset of transcending the world while engaging in worldly affairs.
This argument is well-structured, possessing both theoretical depth and practical guidance.
Many of the Taoist practitioners in the audience had bright eyes, clearly deeply inspired.
Grand Master Xuandu remained silent for a moment, then slowly nodded: "Your insight is unique and perfectly integrated. This question is answered."
Two rounds have passed, and the atmosphere in the audience is becoming increasingly tense.
Everyone looked at Venerable Upati, waiting for the Buddhist sect to pose a question.
Upati clasped his hands together and slowly spoke:
"Fellow Daoist Su's answers in the first two rounds were all based on worldly principles."
However, the essence of Buddhism lies in the Dharma that transcends the world, in liberation from birth and death, and in transcending reincarnation.
Could the unification of the three teachings (Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism) lead to liberation from the cycle of birth and death? Could it transcend the cycle of reincarnation?
This question directly addresses ultimate concern, which is the most core issue in Buddhism.
It's also the most difficult question to answer.
Su Qingxuan's expression turned solemn; he knew this was the most crucial question.
If you don't answer well, all your efforts in the first two rounds will be in vain.
He pondered for a moment before saying, "Your Excellency's question..."
The question is whether the three religions (Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism) share the same ultimate goal of liberation.
Qingxuan believed that they were interconnected.
Although Confucianism rarely discusses life and death, it does emphasize "sacrificing oneself for righteousness and giving up one's life for justice."
They spoke of "preserving peace and tranquility," and of the three immortal achievements: "establishing merit, establishing virtue, and establishing words."
Confucian sages placed individual life and death after morality.
To transcend physical life and death through spiritual immortality.
As the sage of literature once said, "Since ancient times, who has ever escaped death? Let my loyal heart shine in history."
This is because the spirit is immortal, transcending life and death.
"Taoism advocates longevity and long life, and says that 'those who die but do not perish live long.'"
Taoist True Lords pursue harmony with the Tao, believing their physical bodies are perishable.
But the primordial spirit coexists with the Dao. This is because the Dao transcends life and death.
"Buddhism speaks of Nirvana and tranquility, of rebirth, and of 'liberation from birth and death, transcending the cycle of reincarnation.'"
It is neither self-generated nor generated by others, neither shared nor without cause; this is what is meant by non-birth.
No birth is rebirth, and rebirth is no birth.
To understand one's true nature and realize one's original face, one must know that life and death are illusions and reincarnation is a dream.
This is how one transcends birth and death through Prajna wisdom.
"Although the three religions have different doctrines, they all seek to transcend the limitations of life."
Confucianism transcends through the immortality of its spirit.
Taoism transcends through unity with the Tao.
Buddhism uses wisdom to realize and transcend.
Different paths, same goal—
All of this is to liberate oneself from the suffering of birth and death.
Su Qingxuan's voice grew louder: "As for whether the unification of the three religions can resolve the cycle of birth and death and transcend reincarnation,
Qingxuan believes it is possible!
However, it is not a simple superposition of the three methods, but a comprehensive integration.
By employing the Confucian principles of "sincerity of intention and rectification of mind," a solid foundation for one's character can be laid.
The Taoist practice of "refining essence into qi and cultivating qi into spirit" is used to cultivate the foundation of one's life and nature.
Using the Buddhist concept of "enlightenment and seeing one's true nature," it directly points to one's original face.
The three proceed in sequence, complementing each other.
Why worry about not being able to transcend birth and death?
"The unification of the three religions does not mean abandoning the world."
It is precisely because they take saving the world and helping all living beings as their grand aspiration and practice the Way of Heaven that they are able to achieve this.
That is, Confucianism advocates "no ego," Taoism advocates "no self," and Buddhism advocates "no ego."
Everything is done with the well-being of all beings in mind, and with the common people in one's heart.
Therefore, transcending birth and death is not the same as being disgusted by birth and death, and transcending reincarnation is not the same as avoiding reincarnation.
Rather, it is to find freedom in life and death, and liberation in the cycle of reincarnation.
It is from all sentient beings that the fruit of enlightenment is attained.
Like the lotus, it rises from the mud but remains unstained.
This is true freedom and liberation.
These words, like the resounding tones of a great bell, were deeply moving.
Among the Buddhist monks in the audience, many clasped their hands together, chanting Buddhist mantras, their faces showing deep thought.
Even Venerable Upati was slightly moved.
After a long silence, Venerable Upati slowly said, "Amitabha! Young friend Su's words..."
He has a deep understanding of the essential principles of Buddhism.
Neither weary of birth and death, nor enamored with Nirvana, birth and death and Nirvana are the same.
This question is answered correctly.
All three questions were answered correctly!
A moment of silence followed, then a heated discussion erupted.
Countless eyes were focused on Su Qingxuan—
There was admiration, praise, jealousy, and complex emotions.
The three teachings have posed a difficult question, and throughout the millennia, very few have passed the test. But today…
A mortal saint who had ascended to heaven only three months prior had passed all the tests.
Moreover, the answers were profound, insightful, and perfectly balanced.
All of them have been recognized by the sages of the three ancestral temples of religion, how could this not be shocking?
Yu Xiaozhi, Fa Yan, and Meng Xingjian were all speechless, their faces ashen.
Su Qingxuan's answers were all reasonable, and despite their thousand disagreements,
There's nothing wrong with it.
On the high platform, the three hosts looked at each other and nodded.
Yan Wen stood up and announced: "Su Qingxuan has passed all the questions posed by the three religions."
According to the laws of the Heavenly Realm, the Sanyi Palace is the orthodox sacred site of the three religions.
They can enjoy the same status as the three major religions and have the right to participate in celestial affairs.
Recruiting disciples and imparting knowledge and skills.
The sound resounded throughout the hall, effectively vindicating Trinity Palace.
Su Qingxuan cupped his hands in thanks: "Thank you, three sages."
Just as he was about to step down from the stage, a cold voice suddenly rang out: "Wait!"
Everyone looked over and saw that it was Yu Xiaozi who was speaking.
He leaped onto the stage and bowed to the three hosts:
"Three seniors, although Su Qingxuan's theory is sound, the path of unifying the three teachings..."
Ultimately, it was a new creation, untested in practice.
The younger generation disagrees and wishes to determine who is superior through practical experience!
Grand Master Xuandu frowned: "Yu Xiaozi, what do you intend to do?"
Yu Xiaozi said, "Grandmaster, according to the agenda of the Dharma Assembly..."
Next, we will discuss the rules for the Heavenly Grand Competition.
This junior suggests that we allow the disciples of the Three Ones Palace to join the disciples of our three religions...
Let's have a mini-competition. If the disciple of the Three Ones Palace can win,
This proves that the doctrine of unifying the three teachings does indeed have its merits.
It's not too late to discuss the reform of the competition at that time.
If we fail, it proves that this method is nothing but empty talk and unreliable!
These words caused an uproar in the room!
This... is clearly a case of resorting to violence because they can't win a theoretical argument.
Yan Wen said in a deep voice: "Yu Xiaozi, the debate platform at the Dharma assembly is for debating only principles."
This is not a matter of supernatural powers. Your actions are against the rules.
Yu Xiaozi insisted, "Saint Yan, the Heavenly Realm Grand Competition is meant to test disciples' practical skills."
If the idea of unifying the three religions is merely lip service...
If it doesn't work in real combat, then what kind of right path is it?
This junior is willing to stake his thousand years of cultivation on this matter, which is solely for the purpose of verifying the Dao.
There are absolutely no personal grudges involved. If I violate this rule, I am willing to accept divine punishment!
He is using a strategy of retreat to advance, forcing the ancestral temples of the three religions to agree.
The three hosts discussed the matter in hushed tones.
Venerable Upati said, "What Yuxiaozi said is somewhat extreme, but it is not without reason."
The methods and principles of Taoism need to be tested in practice. However, there must be rules and regulations governing how these tests are conducted.
Grand Master Xuandu looked at Su Qingxuan: "Young friend Su, what do you think?"
Su Qingxuan knew that if he didn't accept today, even if the Three Ones Palace gained the rightful name,
They will also be seen as "all talk and no action".
He looked at the four women below the stage and saw that they all nodded to him.
His gaze was firm, clearly indicating that he was prepared.
"Qingxuan is willing to accept," Su Qingxuan said, "but I don't know how to conduct the competition?"
A smug glint flashed in Yu Xiaozi's eyes: "Easy! The three sects..."
Each side will send one outstanding disciple, whose cultivation level will be limited to below Golden Immortal.
Three disciples from the Sanyi Palace also participated in the battle.
Best two out of three, how about it?
His plan was shrewd: the Sanyi Palace was newly established, and most of its disciples were newly recruited.
The highest cultivation level is no more than the late stage of Human Immortal.
Among the various sects of the three religions, there are countless outstanding disciples below the Golden Immortal level.
Pick a few teams with deep experience; the odds of winning are extremely high.
Su Qingxuan shook his head: "No need for three rounds. My Three One Palace will send four people."
A chaotic battle ensued between your four members.
The team with the most people standing on the stage at the end, with a limit of one incense stick's time, wins.
Thus, one can assess both individual skill and the art of teamwork.
Ultimately, the unity of the three religions lies in integration and complementarity.
Yu Xiaozi was taken aback, then sneered: "Fine! I'll do as you say! But..."
Since it's a chaotic battle, we won't consider cultivation levels, only victory or defeat. Do you dare?
"Why wouldn't I dare?" Su Qingxuan said calmly.
After the three presiding monks discussed the matter, Grand Master Xuandu said, "In that case..."
So they made an exception this time.
The contest remains on the debate platform, but a "fantasy battle barrier" must be set up to prevent damage to the true form.
The game is played until the last incense stick burns, and the side with the most remaining members wins.
Now, each side will send out four people to prepare for the competition.
Su Qingxuan leaped off the stage and joined the four women.
Lin Wanqing whispered, "Young Master, they will definitely send their strongest disciple."
It could even be those veteran celestial beings who have been stuck at the threshold of Golden Immortal for hundreds of years.
us……"
Su Qingxuan smiled: "It's alright. You've all made rapid progress in these three months."
His memories of his past life are gradually being unlocked, and his true combat strength is no less than that of an ordinary early-stage Golden Immortal.
Moreover, the integration of the three teachings emphasizes the coordination of mental techniques; individual combat may not necessarily yield much advantage.
But when the four of you work together, your power is multiplied. I have faith in you.
Chi Ying's eyes blazed with fighting spirit: "It should have been done long ago. No amount of theory can replace a good fight."
Xiao Lingxi clenched her fist: "Brother Su, don't worry, I've refined quite a few good pills in the past three months."
We desperately need people to test the efficacy of the medicine… oh no, we desperately need people to verify the Daoist methods!
Xiao Lingyue smiled, her palms pressed together: "Amitabha. To stop war with war, to discuss the Dao through martial arts."
Lingyue was equally eager to participate.
The four women exchanged smiles and then made their own preparations.
On the other side, Yu Xiaozi, Fa Yan, and Meng Xingjian were also selecting disciples.
They each selected their strongest celestial being from their respective sects.
They were all veteran cultivators who had been stuck at the threshold of Golden Immortal for hundreds of years and had accumulated a wealth of experience.
The Daoist sect produced "Qingxuzi," a peak Celestial Immortal, proficient in thunder magic and swordsmanship.
He once fought three opponents of the same level without being defeated.
The Buddhist sect produces "Vajra Monks," peak-level Celestial Immortals with incredibly strong physical bodies.
He is proficient in the Vajra supernatural powers of Buddhism and possesses immense strength.
The Confucian school produced "Wen Xiaosheng," a peak Celestial Immortal, possessing profound Confucian aura and excelling in eloquence.
The law prevails, and verbal and written criticism follows.
The fourth person was Ling Yunzi, whom Yu Xiaozi personally appointed.
He was also at the peak of the Celestial Immortal realm, possessing extremely high talent and being proficient in various Taoist arts.
These four individuals are all top performers in their respective ranks, possessing rich practical experience.
In contrast, the four fairies of the Three Ones Palace were only at the early stage of the Celestial Immortal realm.
There's a difference of three whole minor realms.
In everyone's eyes, the outcome of this battle was a foregone conclusion.
After the discussion, the eight people from both sides flew onto the debating platform.
Grand Master Xuandu waved his hand, setting up an illusionary battle barrier, and the scene on the stage changed.
It transformed into a landscape spanning a hundred miles, with mountains and water.
It has forests and valleys, just like in real life.
Injuries sustained within this barrier will not affect the true body.
However, the pain and mana consumption are no different from those of the real body.
The two sides each occupied a hilltop, facing each other from a distance.
Yan Wen personally lit an incense stick and placed it in the incense burner:
"The competition begins!"
It is:
The three questions have been answered and the name is now orthodox; Yu Xiao has set up a new martial arts competition.
Four beauties take the stage to meet formidable opponents, and the true secrets are revealed in the enchanting realm of incense.
