Chapter 11: First Steps into the Qingqiu Fox Drama Crew
The Buick GL8 drove out of the parking lot of the Guomao Building and turned onto the main road of Hengdian Town.
Shouzhuo sat in the back seat, his face pressed against the car window as he looked out for a while, then suddenly spoke:
"Master, Hengdian is much bigger than Huairou."
Chen Shouyi leaned back in his chair, closed his eyes to rest, and hummed in response.
"There's only one main road in Huairou, and it just ends there. This way, it's all winding and turning." Shouzhuo continued looking out. "But the scenery in Huairou is newer than here."
"Huairou was built later; Hengdian is much older," Zhao Mingyuan said with a smile, turning around from the passenger seat.
"Young master has a good eye. Hengdian has several scenic spots, including Qin Palace, Qingming Riverside Scene, Ming and Qing Palace, Yangcheng Street and Xiangjiang Street. Each of them has a different style."
Our drama was mainly filmed at the Qingming Scroll and the Qin Palace.
He pointed out the car window to a dusty, gray city gate tower in the distance:
"See that? That's the main gate of the Qin Palace. They film a lot of Qin and Han dynasty scenes there. Our crew will be going there to film a few outdoor scenes in a few days."
Shouzhuo followed his finger and nodded.
Zhao Mingyuan then pointed to the other side: "The 'Along the River During the Qingming Festival' painting is over there; it's modeled after Bianliang (Kaifeng) during the Northern Song Dynasty. However, the area where we're filming is separate from the area for tourists to visit."
"Separated?" Shouzhuo withdrew his gaze.
"Of course. Tourists buy tickets to visit the main street and a few open attractions. The filming areas are physically cordoned off with police tape, and production crews guard the entrances, so tourists can't get in."
Zhao Mingyuan laughed and said, "Otherwise, they're filming over there, and a bunch of tourists are taking pictures with their phones. How are we supposed to work?"
"Don't tourists come to Hengdian just to see film crews and celebrities?"
"Dream on." Zhao Mingyuan waved his hand.
"It's really not that easy for ordinary tourists to run into a film crew shooting a movie."
When you're strolling around the scenic area, you might only see a few vans parked in the distance, or see the site staff setting up a cordon, which tells you that there's a film crew shooting inside.
But you want to get in? No way. Unless you're a fan site admin or a proxy photographer, with connections to get to the edge of the set.
"A fan site admin?"
"They're the leaders of fan clubs who specialize in chasing after celebrities and taking photos with them," Zhao Mingyuan explained.
"These people are amazing; they can find the crew filming in any nook or cranny. But our crew is strict; the production assistants chase anyone with a camera away."
Shouzhuo gave an "oh" and then turned to look out the window.
As the car turned into the side gate of the Qingming Riverside Scene scenic area, the security guard recognized Zhao Mingyuan's license plate and raised the barrier from a distance.
After entering, instead of taking the main road, we drove deeper into the area along a cement side road.
The buildings on both sides were no longer Song-style buildings, but rows of gray sheds with numbers painted on the walls and prop boxes and lighting equipment piled up at the door.
"This is the film crew's work area," Zhao Mingyuan pointed to the tents. "Tourists can't come in. Our main tent is inside, tent number 16."
Chen Shouyi opened his eyes and glanced at the direction the sheds faced.
I had a general idea of what was going on. The layout of this shed area wasn't chaotic, but the doors of several sheds faced the intersection directly, which was considered inauspicious.
However, these are not his jobs for the time being; his current job is in shed number 16.
The car came to a stop at the entrance of shed number 16.
The shed door was wide open, and lights were on inside. The voices of the staff could be faintly heard calling out.
Outside the shed, there were several carts and a pile of unopened prop boxes, and a few stagehands were squatting to one side smoking.
Li Xianchang was already waiting at the door, a cigarette between his fingers. When he saw the Buick GL8's license plate, he threw the cigarette butt on the ground and quickly walked over.
"Master Daoist!" Li Xianchang's voice was filled with obvious enthusiasm.
"I've been waiting for you. I thought about the matter of the lingering evil spirit in the shed that you mentioned last night all night."
Our shed has indeed had quite a few minor problems before. The equipment broke down inexplicably several times, and one of the stagehands even slipped and sprained his ankle on flat ground.
Chen Shou got out of the car, straightened the cuffs of his Taoist robe, and Shouzhu jumped down from the other side, slung the heavy bag over his shoulder, and followed behind.
"Let's wait and see."
Li Xianchang led the way, and once inside the shed, a smell of paint, wood, and dust hit us.
The main scene of the antique-style courtyard in the very center is almost complete—artificial hills, corridors, moon gates, and foam-carved brackets painted with antique-style paint, it looks quite authentic from a distance.
Several workers were hanging fake vines on the artificial hill.
Chen Shouyi took the compass from Shouzhuo, held it with one hand, and slowly walked around the shed.
Every few steps, he would glance down at the compass and occasionally look up to examine the lighting layout on the ceiling.
Zhao Mingyuan and Li Xianchang followed behind, barely daring to breathe. Shouzhuo placed the large bag at his feet, unscrewed his thermos, took a sip, and was ready to hand over something at any moment.
After completing the lap, Chen Shouyi put away his compass.
"The orientation of this shed itself is fine. It faces south, with the air vent in the southeast."
Just as Li Xianchang was about to breathe a sigh of relief, Chen Shouyi added another sentence—
"But you built the artificial mountain in the Xun position."
"The Xun position?" Li Xianchang was stunned.
"It's in the southeast corner," Chen Shouyi pointed to the location of the artificial hill.
"The Xun trigram represents wind and flow. Artificial mountains belong to the earth element. If you place a mountain on the windy spot, the energy will naturally stagnate."
The light fixtures on top are positioned directly above the artificial mountain, pressing down on it – the artificial mountain is associated with the element of wood, and the metal fixtures pressing down on it represent the wood being overcome by the metal.
When the Qi (vital energy) stagnates, a person becomes restless. The equipment malfunctions and the staff tripping and falling you mentioned are all due to this reason.
Li Xianchang's expression changed slightly: "Daoist Master, what should we do?"
Chen Shouyi walked a few steps behind the artificial hill, squatted down to look at the foundation, and stood up to pat the dust off his hands.
"The artificial hill doesn't need to be demolished. Just open an opening on the east side, big enough for one person to pass sideways. The Xun position is blocked, so open an opening to let the energy out."
Move the light fixture back three meters, so it's not directly facing the top of the artificial hill. Place a water feature behind the hill; it doesn't need to be too large. Water nourishes wood, and metal nourishes water; water can dissipate the metal energy while generating the wood energy, thus changing the feng shui arrangement.
Li Xianchang quickly took out his phone and wrote it down.
"The offering table is three feet to the east, directly facing the newly opened opening in the artificial hill. On the day the machine is turned on, incense is burned, and the smoke goes out through the opening, carrying away the foul air in the shed."
After Li Xianchang finished writing, the look in his eyes when he looked up at Chen Shouyi was no longer just one of admiration, but almost one of worship. Zhao Mingyuan, watching from the side, nodded inwardly.
As they were talking, the light at the entrance of the shed dimmed slightly, and a group of people walked in from outside.
Walking in front was the chief director, Lin Yufen, dressed in a gray shirt and black clothes. Next to her was Li Guoli, who was working part-time, and they were whispering something to each other.
Behind the two was another person, who looked to be about thirty-five or thirty-six years old, wearing a dark blue casual suit, with his hair neatly combed back.
Zhao Mingyuan immediately went to greet him: "Director, Producer Li."
His gaze then fell on the person behind him, and he paused slightly, slightly taken aback. "Mr. Fang? What are you doing here?"
Fang Xu smiled and said, "I came over to chat with Director Lin about 'Love O2O.' Director Lin said that filming here is about to start, so I just stopped by to observe."
