Chapter 14 The Real Killing Mechanism

Upon returning to the agreed-upon location, Chi Que smelled a fragrant aroma.

Wen Lu leaned against the stone steps, munching on a piece of dried meat. Food was scattered around her, with a shiny piece of oil paper underneath.

Hearing footsteps, she looked up and waved the biscuits in her hand: "If you beg me, I can share some with you."

Chi Que stopped a few steps away: "Where did you find this food?"

He spoke casually, as if it were just a casual question.

Wen Lu said casually, "I found it in the kitchen when I came back. It looked like it was still edible, so I brought it back."

As she spoke, she broke off another small piece of cookie and put it in her mouth, revealing the semi-solidified cream filling.

She chewed gently, her voice crisp and sweet: "I guess some unlucky guy hid it before, and I got lucky."

She seemed to be in a much better mood than before; perhaps sweets really can soothe the soul in this kind of environment.

"I see..." Chi Que nodded slowly, his gaze lingering on the oiled paper for a moment before he sat down on the stone steps.

After waiting a moment and not receiving the response she expected, Wen Lu turned around and asked, "Aren't you hungry?"

"I'm not hungry," Chi Que replied expressionlessly.

He ate it twenty years ago.

"Never mind." She shrugged and suddenly handed over a chocolate-filled cookie. "Here you go. You haven't eaten all day, have you? The final battle is coming up soon, so replenish your energy now."

Chi Que didn't take the cookie, but instead brought up another matter, "Do you remember the dungeon killing mechanic you mentioned? Now, I finally know what that mechanic is."

"Oh, what is it?" Wen Lu asked with a smile, seemingly unconcerned, simply responding to what Chi Que had said.

"Yes—" He was about to speak when the light in the distance seemed to be blocked, and something was approaching.

It was that dark figure.

It appeared silently at the entrance of the courtyard, its eyes, now completely mad, instantly locking onto Wen Lu.

"Do it! Use that suppressor!" Facing the pressure, Chi Que urged. Wen Lu gritted her teeth, a resolute glint in her eyes, and finally tore off the suppressor without hesitation, crushing it!

In an instant, a dark red wave, visible to the naked eye, suddenly spread out from Wen Lu's center!

The twisted black shadow, the instant the fluctuation touched it, seemed to be trapped in an invisible quagmire, unable to move an inch further.

"It's done! It can't move!" Wen Lu's voice was filled with ecstasy. "Quick! Now's the time to finish it off!"

Chi Que drew his gun.

The black muzzle gleamed with a cold, hard luster.

Then, he turned the gun around.

It accurately and steadily aligns with the dew.

"You...?!" Wen Lu's ecstatic expression froze instantly, replaced by disbelief. "What are you doing? Are you crazy? The monster's over there! Kill it! Otherwise, you'll die too!"

She spoke at the top of her lungs, almost shouting.

"I won't die."

Chi Que's gaze remained calm, his gun pointed at Wen Lu without moving: "The killing mechanism in this instance is food. Anyone who eats the food given by that girl will become a target of the shadowy figure."

He paused, then added, "But I never ate her food."

"You...?" Wen Lu glanced down at the biscuits in her hand, then at the oil paper package, and then at the dark figure staring intently at her. Her face paled slightly. "She's not a player?"

"Yes." Chi nodded. "She's not a player."

"No...no...how could this be...she's not a player...? This is impossible!" Wen Lu looked like she was about to collapse, then, as if she had thought of something, she cried out, "Please, forgive me, okay? I didn't do anything bad, I can do anything for you."

As she spoke, she put on a pitiful look, which, combined with her original aloof and mature demeanor, unexpectedly created a rather alluring contrast.

"Ha." Chi Que laughed.

His eyes instantly turned terrifying: "Is that so? But whether it's the student or the burly man, you're the one who killed them, aren't you?"

"What...what are you saying? I don't understand..." Wen Lu twisted her body, her voice softening.

"First, there's that burly man," Chi Que said. "I initially thought he was bitten by a pack of dogs, but that's impossible. So, who injured him? It could only be you. You were standing in the room by the window, with a wide view, and do you remember? You admitted it."

He paused for a moment, then said, "You have good eyesight."

"Then there was the student," he continued. "His death was very strange; he was poisoned, not killed by the shadows, and you suddenly appeared after I found his body."

Wen Lu bit her lip tightly and remained silent.

"And you weren't surprised at all that he died; instead, you kept trying to distract me. I suspected you then, but I just didn't understand why you killed that student."

"Until I connect it to the strong man's death." Chi Que took a deep breath. "Your mission is to kill the other players."

"You've misunderstood," Wen Lu said dejectedly. "My mission isn't to kill other players, but rather to get a high completion rating and obtain the assassin's professional certificate."

"The motive is not important," Chi Que shook his head.

"The point is, you did it," he said coldly. "And don't think you can suddenly throw out a concept that I might be interested in in order to gain an opportunity to negotiate."

"Will...will you kill me...?" she asked with difficulty.

Chi Que slowly shook his head: "No, I won't kill you."

A flicker of disbelief crossed Wen Lu's eyes as she quickly grasped at this lifeline: "You...you're willing to let me go?"

"You're overthinking it." Chi Que interrupted her, his voice devoid of any warmth. "I'm not carrying out a vigilante justice, because I'm just a detective. Deciding your life or death is not something I should be doing."

He turned slightly to the side, his gaze fixed on the shadowy figure.

"See that?" Chi Que said coldly. "Let what's meant to come come. It's your executioner."

"No!" Wen Lu screamed shrilly.

Chi Que turned around, no longer looking at what was about to happen.

After a long while, the tremors subsided.

He looked back.

In the bloody scene, the dark figure stood there blankly.

With difficulty, it bent down and pulled a tattered photograph from the pile of mangled flesh. It gently wiped away the filth and bloodstains, revealing the happy smiles of the two people on the photograph.

Its finger lingered on the photo for a long time.

He looked at Chi Que, a familiar look in his eyes, a look that belonged to a logistics person, and handed him the photo.

Chi Que understood what he meant.

Put the photo back into the album.

This is the obsession of logistics.

By returning the photograph, the ghost was essentially given peace, and thus, the madman's personality naturally gained the upper hand afterward.

"I'm sorry." He sighed softly, a anesthetic needle filled with dark green potion appearing in his hand, which he plunged into the shadowy figure's body. "But you may not be able to rest in peace so easily."
