Elegy from Another World
Chapter 272 Deep Space Blood Twilight, Steel About to Collapse
The cosmic backdrop of Sector B7 is not darkness, but rather a solidified, ochre-red death light tinged with billions of energy beams, some annihilating and others burning. Massive warship wrecks, fractured megastructures, and even fragments of the destroyed Guardian Legion constitute this area's floating, distorted metal graveyard, covered in thick silicon dust. A low, constant hum, symbolizing "order" and "correction," is the fundamental tone here. Deadly centipede-shaped antivirus programs, composed of rhomboid crystals, silently traverse the wreckage, emitting data-dissolving rays; the matrix on the surface of spherical repair fortresses flickers, forcibly smoothing out "errors" back to the initial, cold norms.
At the center of the battlefield, a massive "scar" with its edges still melting and shimmering—the exit created by the "giant cannon" tearing through the structure of the universe—a rift leading to a possible higher-dimensional existence, is being tightly guarded by an endless tide of crimson light.
At the heart of the raging vortex of energy storms stood the battered Paleroco (Sailing of Hope). This colossal vessel, forged from the wisdom of the lower realms, was like a sea monster trapped in invisible quicksand—massive, broken, yet still fighting. Its hull was riddled with patches of extra armor and twisted, externally attached energy conduits, bearing countless wounds. Its core—the abstract engine array—hummed with a low, overloaded roar within the warship, driving a deadly swarm of bees.
The attack didn't come from the ship's cannons. The vents on the Paleroco's belly opened like a honeycomb, and with each battle command, countless silver specks surged forth! These were swarms of tiny, agile, and varied combat drones, like a metallic torrent brought to life by the Abstract Engine, rushing towards the crimson tide of the "Guardians." They tore, detonated, and annihilated within the light tide with self-destructive charges, disruptive pulses, and instantaneous energy bursts, creating a constantly evolving silver storm that bought space for the mothership. With each large-scale swarm attack, the Paleroco's hull trembled violently, and fragments rained down from the damaged areas, drifting into the deep, dark void.
Inside the bridge, dim red emergency lights mingled with flickering malfunction projections. The smell of burning electronic components mingled with the thick odor of coolant. Anxiety and despair hung in the air like a viscous throbbing. On the main screen, the crimson dot symbolizing the "Guardian" resembled the core of an endless sea of blood. The piercing alarm was the scream of the energy core's impending depletion.
The commander of the Freedom Guard—a figure completely shrouded in combat gear and a heavy helmet—stood behind a massive observation window, his visor reflecting the distant, storm-swept exit cracks. His clenched fists pressed white at the edge of the metal platform. He watched as the outer defensive nodes (countless smaller resistance platforms) were mercilessly swallowed by the crimson tide, the blue lights representing the resistance extinguishing one after another. Energy reserves were dwindling like sand in an hourglass.
"Stop the Abstract Engine immediately! Immediately!" The maintenance worker's voice from the core power bay was hoarse and distorted; the energy curve on the virtual panel was almost at its limit! "Forcing the swarm to continue will cause a chain reaction of core failure! Complete destruction!"
"Stop?!" The tactical analyst's voice was almost ripping as the prosthetic arm interface still crackled with electricity. "Stop means surrender! The 'Guardians' will instantly fill the gap! One step back, and you're plunged into an abyss of emptiness!"
A brief, deathly silence. The commander raised his hand and heavily pressed the switch on the control panel. The piercing alarm abruptly ceased, and the roar of the main engines and the abstract engines plummeted to a deathly groan. The massive Paleroco solidified abruptly in the raging energy flow. The faint shields surrounding the hull flickered and vanished instantly. Several crimson beams of destruction seized the opportunity, striking the midsection of the hull and the thruster array, triggering a chain reaction of explosions!
The abyss had arrived. In that instant of stillness, the intensity of the crimson siege surged like a tsunami! The massive net of light woven from the repair program viciously descended, while the destructive spears of the antivirus program rained down like a storm, precisely striking the energy nodes and structural seams exposed after the shields vanished. The light of the Hope warship rapidly dimmed as it was consumed by the crimson.
The bridge was frozen in despair.
"Perhaps... there is still a glimmer of light." An aged yet deathly voice rang out on the communication channel, originating from a cabin deep within the ship, submerged in formulas and data streams, from a silver-haired scholar whose thoughts reflected the wisdom of ancient physics. "Theory... exists only in theory." His voice was like an icicle, "Extremely compressing the full power of the 'Save/Load Generator'." The main screen projected a violent energy model—a rapidly expanding solidified spherical force field centered on Paleroco. "Spacetime Amber... forcibly locking all states of existence around the release point—matter, energy, information... even the 'Guardians'... forming a... 'Sealed Wall.' The price is... we ourselves become solidified anchor points of spacetime coordinates... existence will be replaced by eternal silence... until the force field disintegrates with the increase of data entropy... perhaps billions of years later." He paused, his voice heavy as lead, "We are powerless to reach the upper levels. But let future generations... when the flame of hope is rekindled... this path... is not absolutely severed." This was a desperate statement, tragic to the very core.
The commander's gaze swept over the model, the crimson main screen, and the "faces" on the bridge, a face burning with fear yet also with a final, unwilling resolve. Only the sound of knuckles grinding against each other could be heard.
Boom! Crack!
The devastating explosion shook the very foundations of Paleroco! The ship suddenly sank and veered off course!
"Sector C19! The core of the Concept Modifier... has been precisely hacked! Completely destroyed!" The monitor's scream pierced the air. The Concept Modifier was the warship's "Phantom Cloak," making it difficult for the "Guardian's" logic erasure protocol to accurately locate and analyze Paleroco's existence mode! The very essence of survival was gone!
Deadly alarms erupt in succession:
"Abstract Engine Level 1 Core Chain Overload Circuit Breaker!"
"Cores two and three are overflowing with energy and melting!"
"Engine Four...Engine Five...All abstract engines are functionally disabled! We...have lost power and swarm control!"
Dead silence. All the abstract engine symbols on the screen were frozen in a glaring blood red.
The tactical analyst instantly understood, his voice filled with fear and realization: "The previous encirclement... was bait! They were waiting for us to pause and expose our core weaknesses! Analyze, copy, destroy... they understood the core logic!" Without the abstract engine, unable to drive the swarm, the ship unable to maneuver, and releasing cover near the exit was now a pipe dream. The last bastion collapsed from its core. The faint light at the exit, so close yet so far, suddenly went out.
Pure despair, like a cosmic cold current, sucked away the last bit of warmth from inside the bridge.
"All surviving individuals." The commander's voice, deep and hoarse, resounded through the broadcast system, cutting off the last vestiges of hesitation. "'Wall of Flesh and Blood' contingency plan activated. Evacuate... Paleroco!" The order was given, and countless hatches of all sizes on the Paleroco's hull opened instantly! Countless lower-level narrative individuals, piloting rudimentary aircraft or relying solely on their flesh and blood prosthetics, charged like moths to a flame, launching a final, hopeless assault on the surging crimson tide! They were no longer fighting for breakthrough or victory, but only to sacrifice their own existence, consuming even a fraction of the "Guardian's" computing power or firepower, to buy the last "save/load generator" in the Paleroco's core a few more microseconds, or even nanoseconds, of energy condensation time! Countless faint points of light representing individuals left the relatively safe zone of the warship, instantly annihilated in the dense crimson ray net, silent and without a trace, leaving only a fleeting, instantly erased flash.
Inside the bridge, an unprecedented emptiness and chilling silence reigned. Only the commander, the silver-haired scholar, a few core operators, and the maintenance team keeping the power core running at a minimum. The commander stood before the central control console, his visor reflecting the tiny, flickering lights of the main screen. The emotion detectors reported only an absolute calm like the eye of a storm and a burning will of steel. His hand, steady and without trembling, rested on the never-before-activated final command button marked with a skull and hourglass symbol—activating the "Save Overwrite" extreme mode.
"Final coordinates locked: Exit rift. Power limit output. Target: Overlay release." The command was like a cold, cosmic law.
A high-frequency rumble, like a dying wailing, emanated from the core of Paleroco, gathering a power capable of freezing spacetime and overturning its very rules. The wrecked behemoth laboriously used its attitude control thrusters to aim its bow, now rendered incapable of attack, at the exit fissure at the center of the crimson vortex of light. Not to charge, but to reach that coordinate, to become an eternal amber sacrifice.
The bridge was shrouded in an absolute, suffocating silence. The dying roar of the power core and the sounds of the hull being torn apart by repeated hits were a dirge on the way to the end. All the reserve energy used for "loading" and repairing itself had been drained and poured into this frantic "sealing" process.
Paleroco, burning with the last of his "flesh and blood" energy gained from the annihilation of countless companions, drifted alone in the vast ocean of the crimson tide of death, launching a silent and resolute charge toward the solidified coordinates.
