Chapter 43 A hen that even Tyrone would be drooling over.
When Rhodes returned to the governor's mansion, it was already late at night.
Passing through the heavy gates, the interior of the Governor's Palace still retains the style of Esperança as an atypical agricultural world, with its marble roads being smooth and magnificent.
Lopez had been waiting in the lobby for quite some time.
This man, who was once just a guard of the planetary governor, has now fully adapted to his new identity. He is dressed in a well-tailored governor's uniform with his family crest on his chest, and exudes a calm and capable aura.
"Wandering merchant." Lope bowed. "Welcome back. Your steward, Ms. Aria, and your subordinate, Ms. Liriel, are awaiting your news."
Rod nodded, signaling Lope to follow, and the two talked as they walked down the corridor.
"The problem with Esperan has been resolved," Rhodes said, a hint of weariness in his voice. "Those warp demons will never appear out of thin air again."
A flicker of surprise crossed Lope's eyes, but he quickly regained his composure. "This is exciting news, Your Highness. Lady Alia has been worried that the threat of those heretics would affect our agricultural plans."
"Speaking of agricultural plans," Rod stopped and turned to Lopez, "how's the parsnip cultivation going?"
"Very well, my lord." Lope smiled with satisfaction. "The crop's adaptability is beyond imagination; it thrives even in the poorest soils of Esperan. Some of us have even begun to call it 'the Emperor's Blessing.'"
Rhodes couldn't help but smile slightly. At least when it came to farming, he had to find the best solution in farming games.
“Very good, but crops alone are not enough,” Rod continued. “I plan to introduce a new breed of poultry to increase Esperan’s meat production as well.”
Lope paused, "A poultry breed? Sir, do you mean the Grox? Those creatures, while having abundant meat, still retain a strong aggressive nature even after a lobotomy..."
"No, it's not that kind of thing." Rhodes waved his hand. "You'll find out soon enough."
Rhodes walked toward the governor's mansion's reception room, pushed open the heavy oak door, and two figures immediately came up.
Aliya was wearing a smart steward's uniform. A few strands of her long, golden hair, which was originally neatly combed back, fell loose and fluttered in front of her forehead. The bloodshot eyes showed that she hadn't had much rest in the past few days.
Standing next to her was a completely different person. This former con artist from the bottom rungs of the space dock was now wearing a tattered Esperan labor uniform, her messy red hair casually draped over her shoulders, and an unlit cigarette dangling from her lips.
"None of Esperan's settlements were breached. Only about 30% of the laborers died at the hands of the suddenly appearing demons. Most of the laborers who entered the settlement in time survived. We also have working-type servants to fill the positions, so Esperan's human resources should not be greatly affected."
"Boss, there are some blind fools mixed in with your bunch of blockheads. I've already had your manager take care of them."
You can tell that several days of intense work can make a person feel lethargic and lifeless.
Although loyal service from subordinates is a given for a wandering merchant, Rhodes, who was also a corporate slave in his previous life, didn't have the mindset of being hung on a street lamp.
After briefly expressing his approval of their abilities and promising them some rewards, Rhodes returned to his private room, locked the door, and only after confirming that no one was around did he open the system shop interface in his mind.
In the Stardew Valley game store, all kinds of agricultural products are priced quite high, but the pixelated animated icon labeled "chicken" is the most attractive to Rhodes.
"It's you."
Rhodes used the universal energy within the system to exchange for the hen's chick. A soft white light flashed, and a fluffy little chick appeared in his palm.
This little chick looks no different from any other chick on Earth—golden down, round little eyes, and a tiny beak that keeps exploring his palm.
It chirped in Rod's palm, completely unremarkable.
But Rod knew that beneath the seemingly ordinary and harmless appearance of this hen chick lay a terrifying reproductive rate comparable to that of an alien insect.
First of all, this thing is not picky about food at all. Just throw some crop scraps or hay at it and it will eat them with great relish.
Secondly, and most importantly, it only takes three days for a chick to grow into an adult hen.
Three days!
In the Warhammer universe, it takes at least several dozen weeks for Groxmon to grow from cubs to slaughterable size. Although Groxmon meat is delicious and plentiful, even after undergoing lobotomy, they are still aggressive. Every year, many unfortunate ranch workers are trampled into mincemeat by rampaging Groxmon.
As for another common source of meat in the empire—canned ant-cow meat—that Rhodes avoided at all costs.
Although the ant beef tastes pretty good, I've heard it's like snowflake beef, canned food that isn't completely deactivated sometimes tries to eat the person who opens the can. Rhodes doesn't want to have to fight a life-or-death battle with his food just to have a meal.
The hens in Stardew Valley don't have these problems at all.
More importantly, this hen can lay hatchable eggs even without a rooster. Simply place the eggs in an incubator, and new chicks will hatch in a week, and the chicks will reach adulthood in just three days.
Rod began to calculate silently in his mind.
A hen takes three days to mature and lays one egg a day.
Let's say you buy a chick on the first day, it reaches adulthood and starts laying eggs on the fourth day, the first batch of eggs hatches into new chicks on the eleventh day, and these new chicks reach adulthood on the fourteenth day...
This cycle repeats itself, and every so often, the number of these hens doubles.
If you initially introduce a hen chick, you will reap a harvest of an adult hen and four eggs after a week.
By the end of the second week, he will have six hens and ten eggs waiting to be hatched.
A month later, there were 55 chickens and more than 200 eggs.
As a wise old man once said, "Compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world."
"If this growth rate continues..." Rhodes looked down at the chirping chick in his hand, a meaningful smile appearing on his lips, "it will probably take about four months for the number of these things to exceed one billion."
The cargo ships at that time may not be able to consume all the meat produced on Esperan, and some of it will have to be distributed to the workers on Esperan as food rations.
And all of this only requires this seemingly ordinary little chick as a starting point.
Rod gently stroked the chick's soft down, feeling the warmth of the chick lying in his palm. Only in moments like this could he briefly forget that he was in a universe that was comparable to a cesspool.
