Chapter 36 The Vanished Zerg and the Slaanesh Banshee
"Boss, where are we going to do business?" Lillie asked, her curiosity piqued as she looked at Rod, who was frowning.
"Go see what kind of filthy things are causing trouble in my granary," Rod said irritably.
Fortunately, Rhodes was still able to connect to the Zerg swarm on Esperan via psionic links from Blackwing Harbor. It seems that the psionic links the system provided to its Zerg hives weren't secondhand. It's just unknown how far the communication range could be maintained.
A few galaxies? Hundreds of light-years? Or can we communicate across half the Milky Way? But these are all secondary. The biggest advantage of the Swarm Psionic Link is its immediacy.
Unlike the local psionic communications of Warhammer 40k, if the Astrologers send out Astrologian communications from the borders of the Empire, it takes several days for the Astrologian Court of Holy Terra to receive these messages.
As long as Rhodes can establish a psionic connection with these Zerg, the events unfolding on Esperan will immediately be transmitted back to his mind.
The creatures that appeared on the surface of Esperan this time were still the low-ranking Slaanesh banshees. Lope had gathered most of the ordinary laborers and guards on the planet into several large settlements. The guards of this agricultural world alone could not stop these hordes of warp demons. Fortunately, Queen Leonora and her hive forces were still entrenched on Esperan.
Several hatcheries located on Rhodes' private estate have entered full-scale operation mode, with the fungal carpet continuously absorbing minerals from the ground and then providing energy for the newborn larvae through various complex chemical and photovoltaic reactions.
Like a tidal wave of springtails and cockroaches, they silently circled out of this forbidden zone, forming a hidden circle around the major urban areas of Esperan, keeping most of the Slaanesh banshees who wanted to approach fresh souls at bay.
Even so, the number of alien insects produced by these few hatcheries is far from enough. A swarm of tens of thousands of insects simply cannot completely surround the settlement; they can only rely on patrols for defense.
Occasionally, a few Slaanesh banshees would slip through the swarm's defenses, and then the inhabitants of the settlement would suffer.
The Slaanesh's hallucinogenic and sensory-stimulating abilities are practically useless against the Zerg swarm, but once she enters a crowded area, she can single-handedly kill several ordinary soldiers on defense, making them scratch their eyeballs and throats, and even pull the trigger on their comrades.
Worse still, according to intelligence from the Hive, the number of these androgynous warp demons with enormous crab claws is gradually increasing.
At this rate, Esperan won't be able to farm; Rhodes will probably have to build hatcheries all over half the planet's surface and cover the entire surface with fungal carpet just to keep up with these warp demons.
Christina activated its subspace engines and disappeared near Blackwing Harbor.
A few days later, when the lunar cruiser reappeared over Esperan's planet, a somber atmosphere permeated the bridge inside.
"Father Soren, has the corruption on Esperan truly been eradicated?"
Looking at the bridge officers and others who had been summoned, Rhodes sat in the captain's seat and rubbed his eye sockets.
"By the Divine Emperor, I swear that the Emperor's servants did not find any signs of corruption at the time."
Dressed in a long robe and holding the Imperial Scriptures and staff, Father Soren shook his head. After the traveling merchants quelled the heretical rebellion, he and his state priests spent a week traveling to almost every settlement in Esperan, ensuring there would be no oversights.
Seeing that the other party was so certain, Rhodes had no choice but to continue the meeting.
"Aliya, you are in charge of leading the soldiers on the flagship to reinforce Esperan's main settlement area."
"Liriel, you're in charge of gathering intelligence and keeping an eye out for those who might be corrupted by demons."
As for Rhodes himself, he planned to return to the Zerg hive again.
Just in the last few days, he received another message from the Queen of Insects, Leonora.
A small team of scouts, tasked with identifying the source of these warp demons, encountered several lone Slaanesh banshees. Based on past experience, they believed that the sheer number of these scouts and banshees should be more than enough to take them down.
But these insects quickly lost their psionic link. When the other springtails and cockroaches arrived at the scene, they found the insects' corpses, but the Slaanesh had also disappeared.
Red dots flickered on the surface of the planetary holographic projection on the bridge, each dot representing a settlement besieged by Slaanesh. Without further ado, Rhodes handed over command to Aria and boarded the shuttle.
The black, streamlined shuttle flew over the swarm of insects on the ground and landed deep within Rhodes' private territory. Of course, Rhodes himself piloted the shuttle deep into the insect hive this time.
As soon as he stepped out of the hatch, the sensation under his feet was no longer hard rock or soil, but soft, warm, and slightly pulsating fungal carpet. Rhodes no longer cared about the fungal carpet avoiding his feet and walked directly out on the gray slime.
Leonora was already waiting at the entrance of the hatchery. The queen was now much larger, and as the number of alien insects under her hive increased and time passed, the psionic power contained within her body grew stronger.
The hive's manager didn't speak, but instead used the psionic link to command the worker bees to display the brought-back Zerg corpses to Rhodes.
Rod bent down and carefully examined the dead fleas and cockroaches.
Their hard shells are as fragile as paper in the face of enemy weapons, the cuts are as smooth as a mirror, without the slightest hesitation.
"My Lord, these wounds retain faint psionic energy, but unlike those of the demons, this psionic energy is more... stable and sharp."
Leonora's voice rang directly in Rhodes's mind, tinged with confusion and anger, "My children fell before they could even see what the enemy looked like. It's a disgrace."
"It's not your fault, Leonora. You're still young and haven't encountered all sorts of enemies yet." Rhodes stood up and patted the Zerg fluid off his hands.
The fungal carpet covering the ground quickly covered the corpses of these alien insects, rapidly melting and decomposing them, turning them back into biomass and nutrients, and sending them back to the nearby hatchery.
He knew perfectly well what weapon had caused these wounds, capable of separating single-molecule flakes from the ammunition core, easily slicing through muscle and bone, even from a star dart gun made of plastic steel.
This weapon, used by the Eldar, has no physical trigger. The gun body, made of Eldar bone material, is driven by the Eldar's mind, so it's perfectly normal for it to retain some psionic energy.
