Chapter 32 The Last Dance Bar
Now that things have come to this point, Steward Axel can only grit his teeth and swallow his anger.
He signaled to the law enforcement team behind him to lift their guard, and Rhodes's Marines and Reapers also put away their weapons.
"I hope we can have a pleasant collaboration."
a few days later.
"Your Amasec." The bartender placed a glass of liquid that looked like some kind of industrial solvent on the bar counter, then pushed the glass, made of smelted scrap metal, towards Rod. The glass, filled with liquid, slid across the bar counter, making a loud noise.
Is this stuff really drinkable?
Rod glanced at the liquid in the glass; it had turned black, and the spices added to the liquor couldn't mask the pungent smell, which was completely different from the citrus sake he had drunk in Esperan.
Axel spent a great deal of effort to clean up the warehouse and the lowest level of the sewage pipe area. He also found a hidden warehouse and burned the corpses of the believers and the Chaos Egg to the ground.
As for the surviving or mutated workers, they disappeared into the lower levels. Rhodes didn't know where they went, but he had neither the ability nor the obligation, nor the inclination, to save everyone. All he could do was get Desmond's foster mother, Anya, onto the Christina.
After securing the position of the dock manager, Rhodes instructed Aria to contact the Star Guardians stationed at Blackwing Harbor and report Desmond's situation to the Empire.
Fortunately, a black ship would be passing by the space dock in a few weeks, and Desmond would not have to be imprisoned for decades or executed like some unfortunate psykers in remote worlds.
Barry, the senior advisor of the Christina, was responsible for discussing the trade of Esperan crops with General Axel, but this time, General Axel probably didn't dare to have any ulterior motives.
However, deep in Rhodes' heart, there was still one question that remained unanswered: why was there a lone Chaos Can on his planet?
Most of these defecting Space Marines gathered near the Eye of Terror or the Great Rift, while the area where he was located was a long way away from both places. It was as if the purple can had accidentally come to Esperan because it got lost.
When Rhodes suggested finding a place to gather intelligence, Anya, who had been brought aboard the flagship, gave him a suggestion: the tavern called "The Last Dance," located at the junction of the lower and upper sections of the docks.
And so, Rhodes, alone with two Marines and a medic, arrived at the tavern, ordered the Amasec, which had the largest font on the menu, and then the scene just now unfolded.
Even within Amasec, there are good and bad quality wines.
"Why don't you drink it?" Rod pushed the glass of amasec toward the Marine next to him. No matter what, he himself didn't want to drink the liquid in the metal glass.
"Commander, this..."
The Marine looked at the liquid in front of him, which reminded him of the blood that gushed from the severed limbs of insects when he fought them in the Char system.
He turned his head and looked around. Other people dressed in all sorts of ways were also casting curious glances in his direction. Among them were low-level workers, law enforcement officers, and some nobles who looked to have some power.
Hopefully it's a good thing.
Under the gloating gaze of another Marine and the watchful eye of the medic, the Marine raised his glass and downed the liquid in one gulp.
Rhodes stared wide-eyed, waiting for the Marines' reaction.
A few minutes later, watching the Marines slumped over the table, receiving treatment from the medics, Rhodes silently dismissed the thought that "you can't judge a book by its cover."
"Don't you have any better wine?" Rod bluntly asked the bartender, "Like a good wine for smart people? I'll take whatever it costs."
Unexpectedly, the bartender simply shook his head, took a slightly clearer bottle of liquor from the bar behind him, and placed it on the table.
"Excuse me, sir, this is the best wine we have here."
At first glance, this bottle of wine is indeed a rare find for the poor workers at the bottom of Blackwing Harbor, but Rhodes knows that Anya has lived in this port for so many years, and the place she recommends is definitely not just a simple bar.
The bartender in front of him probably thought he was some nouveau riche from some remote world who had struck it rich and came to Blackwing Harbor to seek attention.
"Neil, how could you treat this gentleman like that?"
A vibrant female voice came from behind. Upon hearing this voice, the bartender in front of him gave him a disdainful look. Rod turned around from the bar stool and saw a young woman standing behind him. She had slightly dark skin, one side of her hair was shaved short, and the other side of her red hair was braided into a thin braid.
Her coat was sewn with the logo of the Blackwing Hong Kong Star Force Logistics Department, but upon closer inspection, it could be seen that the logo on the left shoulder was not very close to the clothes, and it looked as if it could be taken off at any time.
Rhodes was intrigued by the girl's attitude. When the other customers in the bar saw the equipment on the Marines and medics, they instinctively moved away from them. In the past few minutes, not a single customer dared to come up to the bar to order. But this girl boldly approached them without any fear.
"What, Lillie, are you going to help him with his business, or are you planning to continue running up the tab today?" The bartender glanced at the young woman behind Rhodes and continued wiping the glass that the Marine had just finished drinking from.
"Neil!" the woman called Liriel shouted the bartender's name, then pulled out two precious metal coins from an unknown planet from inside her coat and threw them on the bar counter.
After accepting the coin toss from the other party, Neil wisely kept quiet.
"My esteemed sir, just by looking at your bearing I can tell you must be a first-rate nobleman from some wealthy planet. If you're looking for an intelligent person, you've come to the right place!"
Liriel pulled another coin from her pocket at some point, the golden coin deftly flipping between her fingers, while her mouth launched into a long, rambling introduction.
"I, Lillier, the know-it-all of Blackwing Harbor, have no secrets I can't uncover on this space dock!"
The other patrons in the bar glanced at the woman, then turned away in unison and went back to what they were doing.
Anyone who has lived in Blackwing Harbor for a period of time has been fooled by this woman.
For example, she would use forged Astragalus documents to falsely claim that the Astragalus needed to replenish its forces from Blackwing Harbor, and that as long as she paid enough "approval fees," she could be exempted from going to the battlefield. However, those who were deceived eventually found out that there was no such thing when they asked her.
If these civilians, who are not from a conscription world and have not received any training, were to join the Astral Army, I'm afraid a large number of them would be shot by the political commissar that very day.
Now Lillie has her sights set on this nouveau riche who just arrived in Blackwing Harbor, and it seems someone else is about to be scammed.
Rhodes nodded: "I'd like to learn some interesting information about nearby star systems. Do you have any connections?"
"Of course! Just this number!" Liriel quickly patted her collarbone, then solemnly held up five fingers to Rhodes.
