Chapter 26 The Survivors
What's coming will come eventually, but Rod couldn't just not answer. The other party was his steward, almost a combination of butler and secretary. If he just brushed him off, there would be many inconveniences later.
This wasn't because Aria was overly curious, but because if similar power armor were discovered within the Terran Empire, the State Church, the Inquisition, the Mechanicus, and the Space Marine Chapters, it would cause serious trouble.
Possibly stealing and replicating the Emperor Angel's armor, suspected of heresy, unauthorized use of dubious scientific technology outside of STC template creations... For an ordinary person, any one of these charges would be enough to send them to trial.
Even though Rhodes was a wandering merchant with a high degree of autonomy, he couldn't escape getting into trouble.
That's why Aria had to ask Rhodes about the origins of these personnel and the power armor in order to decide whether to hide this armed force or package it as something more legitimate.
Rhodes roughly guessed what she was thinking, and his gaze began to wander.
It's because my overall strength is too weak right now. If I wait until the future and upgrade my technology, I can beat the Terran Zerg, kick the Warp Demons, and deal with the Green-skinned Sprouts and Space Necromancers. Would I still need to be at the mercy of others?
But for now, he can only bear it, since he can't even afford the basic technology for a single star system.
"Ahem—well…" Rhodes coughed. "All you need to know is that this is a technological product passed down from the Vandrick family during the Golden Age, and the personnel involved were recruited during that time."
If an outsider has any questions, you can have them ask me.
If someone were to ask, aside from someone with the status of a judge, Rhodes probably wouldn't even bother to meet them, let alone answer them in person.
"I understand."
Aliya nodded helplessly, agreeing to her traveling merchant's explanation.
"Let's deal with the troubles later. The most urgent thing is to quickly check on the situation in the grassroots areas."
Rhodes finally got the matter over with and then hurriedly gathered all the Marines and medics together.
One of his mission objectives is still nowhere to be found, and the marines and medics he just summoned have left him penniless again. Under the influence of sunk costs, Rhodes is even more reluctant to part with the remaining universal energy reward from that mission.
More than twenty Marines stood in neat rows in front of him, their yellow masks retracted inside their power armor helmets. On either side of the line were the remaining four medics, all waiting for his orders.
"Divide into groups and investigate the lower levels. Understood?"
"Of course, Commander!"
It seems he has gained another title. Rhodes wasn't surprised when he heard the Marines address him, after all, he already had enough titles.
A wandering merchant, a Zerg overlord, and now a commander.
I wonder what those fanatics will call themselves once the Protoss race shop opens.
The situation in the Blackwing Harbor underground pipeline area is not optimistic.
The Marines and medics, divided into four groups, quickly completed their search of the surrounding area. Although it wasn't large, there were at least a thousand workers gathered in the area.
Now, apart from a few workers who escaped by hiding in corners and pipes, there are no living people left in this area.
Most of the workers were dragged into an abyss worse than death by the demon's warp magic and claws.
Rhodes also tried asking the medics if they could treat those mutated by warp magic.
But whether it was repairing the body with a regulator or performing physical surgery with a cold laser surgical instrument, it had no effect other than making those half-human, half-object dockworkers scream even more miserably.
It seems that matters of warp and psionic energy really do require more specialized solutions. Trying to solve a problem that even the Empire couldn't solve with basic units from the barracks is indeed a bit of wishful thinking.
To make matters worse, after the Marines searched the area and killed a few hiding Felfiends, they still couldn't find the boy Rhodes had mentioned.
"Oh no, could these warp demons have been created by that brat's self-destruction?"
Rhodes' heart sank, but he quickly dismissed the idea, because the relevant tasks in the system's task panel still showed a partially completed status, without any failures.
Undeterred, Rhodes continued searching for possible clues in the pipe area, but soon he found a broken communicator lying on the ground. Just a dozen steps away from the broken communicator was the boy's hiding place.
With a "let's give it a try" attitude, Rod pulled back the yellowed rag covering the pipe entrance.
A female worker was lying not far from the pipe entrance, her eyes closed, surrounded by a faint subspace energy fluctuation, her face purple.
Rhodes reached out and checked the other's breath. The layer of subspace energy that had enveloped the other's entire body had reached its limit and disappeared after the energy was exhausted.
Sadly, the worker in front of me has stopped breathing.
Just as Rhodes was about to leave the pipe, a medic responsible for inspecting the pipes followed him in.
She turned on the laser surgical instrument in her left hand, switched to scanning mode, and the green beam swept over the worker lying on the ground. Then she quickly bent down to check his pulse, got up from the ground, and shouted towards the outside of the pipe.
"Come quick! There's still a living person here!"
"Huh?" Rod was stunned.
It seems we still can't rely on methods from various novels, like checking someone's breath to determine if they're still alive, even if their face is purple.
Professional matters should be left to professional doctors.
A moment later, the female worker lying on the ground resumed breathing.
According to the medic, the worker had entered a state of apparent death due to lack of oxygen, but strangely, there were no signs of any foreign objects obstructing his mouth and nose.
Thinking of the warp light that had dissipated from the person in front of him, Rhodes couldn't help but shudder.
This person must be the boy's family member, and the subspace energy wall made of psionic energy doesn't seem to be the work of the Fear Demon.
It's likely that when that kid left by accident, his spiritual energy went out of control, unintentionally adding a spiritual energy shield to the worker in front of him. However, not knowing how to control his internal power, he didn't realize that this shield had turned into a suffocating noose.
Therefore, there is a reason why the Empire hunts down illegal psionicists.
A psychic who has not learned to control their psychic power, even if they have good intentions, may bring about disastrous consequences.
Fortunately, Rhodes and his group arrived not too late.
The worker before me seemed to have woken from a nightmare, his calloused hands frantically groping for the ground beside him:
"Desmond! Desmond! Where are you?!"
"Calm down, ma'am, we're looking for Desmond too." Rod softened his tone, trying not to provoke her. "I know he's alright for now, but we need your help to find him and prevent him from getting into danger."
Upon hearing this, the previously restless female worker quieted down, withdrawing her groping hands and placing them in front of her.
After a moment of silence, she spoke.
