When Erii arrived, she saw all the hunters surrounding Maido, who looked helpless, with righteous indignation.
"Look, she's here. I already told you I didn't do it. The culprit is this guy under my feet." She shrugged and curled her lip.
"She's my friend, and she came with me," Erii explained.
Upon hearing confirmation from witnesses, Jeff and the others slowly lowered their weapons and surveyed the scene with puzzlement.
The Dustman who was shot in the head, the Wilderness Hunter who fell into a coma, the captain who was barely hanging on by a thread, and another ground survivor whose origins were unknown but who was suspected to be an ally.
It's too complicated!
"How's the captain? Who did this?!" Erica jumped out of the heavy machine, looking at the bone spur that had been pulled out, and said angrily.
"His life is in danger, it's very serious, but the bleeding has stopped, he'll be fine for a while." The team's medic stepped forward and injected Mark with adrenaline and other drugs all at once.
"It's him, I'm just a step too late, otherwise I could have stopped it." Maido kicked A-Zheng.
"Ah Zheng? That's impossible! Why would he kill the captain? There's no reason for it!" An acquaintance immediately retorted in disbelief.
"Let him confess himself," Mai Duo said without hesitation, kicking A Zheng in the stomach. "Stop pretending to be dead, I know you've been awake for a while."
There was no movement.
Seeing this, Erii said calmly, "Let me try."
As soon as he finished speaking, Ah Zheng hurriedly raised his arm and coughed dramatically, saying, "No need, I'm injured and my mind is foggy."
When he turned to Maido, his face instantly contorted with shock and rage. "It was her! She and that dustman conspired to harm the captain!"
"Huh?" Mydo tilted her head cutely and raised her gun as if to stab.
"I believe her, not you," Erii said without hesitation.
"Tell the truth," Fei Xue said coldly, her sniper rifle aimed at A Zheng's temple.
"Kid, tell me the truth," Xuefeng said, frowning, his tone unusually stern.
No one present was a fool, especially the veterans in their forties and fifties, who were all like cunning foxes.
Those survivors on the surface who can be with Erii's group are probably no ordinary humans. If they really wanted to kill Mark, why bother with all this roundabout stuff?
Seeing the questioning looks from his former comrades, Ah Zheng, his mental defenses crumbling, slumped back, burying his face in his hands and sobbing uncontrollably. "It was me! She wasn't lying! I'm the one who killed the captain, waaaaah!"
In an instant, Jeff, Feixue, and seven or eight others kicked out simultaneously, pinning him to the wall and leaving him unable to get down.
Then, Ah Zheng recounted the whole story.
Ah Zheng is just an ordinary hunter. The contribution points he earns are barely enough for daily expenses, and he dares not use them for entertainment or to improve his quality of life.
The most terrifying thing is that he must ensure that he does not get injured in any action. Once he gets injured, he will exhaust his limited contribution points. If he doesn't have enough contribution points and his injury is too serious, he will be coldly abandoned by the Lighthouse.
After Morgan announced Mark's succession as city lord, Charles secretly approached Ah Zheng and promised that as long as he killed Mark without anyone noticing, he would be transferred to the Light and Shadow Society as a high-ranking official, so that he would not have to go down to the ground to face life and death, nor would he have to worry about not having enough to eat.
Once Charles becomes the city lord, Ah Zheng's status will rise accordingly, and he will be promised to become one of the core leaders of the Lighthouse.
Faced with such temptation, A-Zheng failed to stay true to himself.
"And what about him?" Erii pointed to 4068.
"He was also acting on Charles's orders to kill Mark. I don't know much about it, but it seems like the woman he liked was captured by Charles," A-Zheng replied dejectedly.
The hunters remained silent, each one burning with rage, wishing they could rush up and shoot Charles dead immediately.
"That Charles, he's done so many bad things, he's the one who deserves to die!" Mydo said indignantly.
"Yes, she really deserves to die," Erii said calmly.
"ah"
The medic's terrified screams rang out.
She frantically pulled backward, her eyes fixed on Mark's exposed back after he rolled over.
When everyone looked over, they all felt a chill rush straight to the top of their heads.
There was a hideous and terrifying spinal parasite living on Mark's spine!
"What's going on?!" Mo Cheng's shocked and angry voice rang out.
He jumped down from above, carrying a medicine box, and stared blankly at Mark, his eyes filled with fear and worry.
While everyone was stunned, Mo Cheng quickly walked to Mark's side, took out a dagger, and was about to pry the spinal worm off alive.
"If you want him to die immediately, then continue." A cold yet authoritative voice descended from above into everyone's ears.
"Boss?!" Mai Duo was shocked, not expecting Bai Yuekui to reveal himself.
"Village chief?" Erii looked up at the sound of the voice, surprised. "You've all come!"
Mo Cheng's hand paused, and he looked up like the others.
Swish swish!
Bai Yuekui, Xia Dou, Sui Xing, Shan Da, and Xu Tong did not use ropes; instead, they fell straight down from the hall and landed steadily.
Several strangely dressed people suddenly appeared, startling the hunters.
"Why can't you move? The spinal worm is clearly parasitizing Mark!" Mo Cheng asked, disregarding who the other person was.
"The reason he's still alive is entirely due to the spinal worms that prolong his life. Have you ever heard of an external pacemaker?" Bai Yuekui said calmly.
"Who are you?" Jeff frowned, scanning them one by one.
"Survivors on the ground," Bai Yuekui said patiently, "your lighthouse took my things back then and haven't returned them to this day. I suppose Morgan is the only one who remembers me."
"You know Lord Morgan?" Everyone was shocked.
Lord Morgan had repeatedly stated that there were no survivors on the surface, but this woman said that Morgan remembered her—so the lord was lying.
Well, Morgan's image as a city lord has crumbled even further.
Bai Yuekui ignored the barrage of questions from others, squatted down, took several small devices with an ancient yet futuristic design from Shan Da, inserted them into Mark's back muscles, and connected them to the spinal worm.
Zizi!
As the device was activated, the spinal worm resisted and contracted, but soon fell into a state of dormancy.
"He's temporarily stable. If left untreated, the spinal worm will continue to erode his body," Bai Yuekui reassured everyone.
"Although I don't understand the situation, thank you anyway, big sister," Erica said obediently and sensibly.
"What are you guys doing? Coming down here to die in the middle of the night instead of sleeping?" Xia Dou muttered.
"Morgan suddenly fell ill, and there was no medicine available," a veteran replied.
"Just as I thought." Mydo snorted coldly, showing utter contempt for Morgan and Charles, whom she had never met before.
"Aren't you going to the lighthouse?" Bai Yuekui looked at Erii. "Then hurry up, the spinal cord parasite on Mark must be dealt with as soon as possible."
With no leader, the group was at a stalemate. Commander Mark was half-dead, and his adjutant, Zaibing, was imprisoned in the law firm. At this critical moment, no one dared to give orders easily.
Erii clapped her hands decisively and called to all the hunters, "Take me up."
"You want it?" Feixue asked hesitantly.
Erii's gaze was deep and unfathomable. "I need to take care of something."
Sensing the murderous intent in their words, everyone was instantly energized, quickly packing up their equipment and leaving the company ruins to return to the convoy's base.
"Are we going too?!" Xia Dou asked excitedly.
Bai Yuekui picked her up and placed her next to Erii, then lifted his long legs and climbed into the armored vehicle.
Meanwhile, Maido and the others drove their own cars behind the hunter convoy, the five vehicles speeding across the wasteland.
At this moment, the rising sun had already climbed over the mountain.
Bai Yuekui originally didn't plan to go together, at least not according to the original plan, since Lighthouse's medical technology could completely solve Mark's current condition.
Erii's appearance changed her mind. This girl was a huge variable, and she wouldn't feel at ease unless she kept an eye on her herself!
"The hunters have requested to return. Mission accomplished, medicine successfully retrieved," Mo Cheng reported over the communicator.
"Buzz—This is Jingnan. Received. Coordinates sent. The elevator platform is being lowered," Jingnan replied with a joyful voice.
Mo Cheng fell silent.
None of the hunters uttered a word; their cold, stern faces were filled with murderous intent!
