"What Xu Wenbo can give me, you can't give me right now," Kunlong sneered, as if to shatter Wu Sheng's last shred of hope.
"You and Xu Wenbo are probably not relatives, nor are you deeply intertwined in terms of interests," Wu Sheng asked tentatively.
"So what?" Kunlong casually admitted.
"What I can give in the future, Xu Wenbo can't give now, and he certainly can't give in the future." After receiving this answer, Wu Sheng raised his head and met Kunlong's scrutinizing gaze without flinching.
These words startled Kunlong for a moment, then he seemed to have heard a joke: "Oh? What can you give me? Do you think you can become a martial artist? Kid, don't overestimate yourself."
Faced with ridicule, Wu Sheng's reply was brief and clear: "I have reached the fifth level of Body Tempering."
……
"What are you standing there for? Follow me."
"It's getting late, let me take you through the registration and other things first. It'll be too much trouble if we don't do it today."
Danxin's voice pulled Wu Sheng back from his reverie. He quickened his pace, keeping a half-step distance from the martial arts instructor.
"How did you, a mere out-of-towner who just arrived in the city, manage to provoke the police?" Danxin suddenly asked, his tone casual, as if he were just chatting.
"Are you interested in knowing, sir?"
"I was bored on the way here, tell me about it."
After a moment's thought, Wu Sheng recounted his family's old grudges with the Xu family, as well as Xu Wenbo's possible involvement, in the most concise language.
After listening, Dansing neither expressed sympathy nor judged right or wrong, but simply asked, "Then where do you think the problem lies?"
Wu Sheng's gaze sharpened slightly. After a moment of silence, he uttered two words: "Strength."
"I'm not strong enough, my fists aren't hard enough," he added, his voice calm but carrying a cold, unwavering determination.
Upon hearing this, Danxin paused slightly, glanced at Wu Sheng, and a smile appeared on his face: "Haha, not bad, very clear-headed. Remember this feeling. When you become a martial artist, this little thing will seem like a joke in retrospect."
Soon, Danxin helped Wu Sheng complete the student registration and receive the martial arts academy's uniform, identity badge, and other items.
"Originally, all new students were supposed to undergo a basic physical examination, but since you were late, it would be too troublesome to arrange it separately, so we'll skip it," Danxin said on your behalf.
"A physical exam? What kind of exam?" Wu Sheng's heart skipped a beat.
"It's just a matter of checking for any hidden ailments in your body, and whether your physical constitution is suitable for further training. Don't worry, those who are selected from the outer city are generally fine; it's just a formality." Danxin seemed unconcerned. "As for your situation, just tell others that you've already been examined, and don't say anything more."
These words, however, quietly aroused a hint of doubt in Mr. Wu's heart. Was this "physical examination"... really just a formality?
"It's getting late, let me take you to your dorm. Training will officially begin early tomorrow morning."
……
The dormitories for the martial arts academy students were simple six-person rooms with bunk beds. Perhaps for ease of management, most of the students from the outer city were grouped together.
At this moment, dormitory number four was already quite lively. Yan Liang, Zhang Lin, Tu Nan, the talkative boy from the ship, Zhao Dele, the only student from the outer city, and a fierce-looking boy named Suo Guli were chatting and getting to know each other.
"What's the deal with that guy named Wu Sheng? Is he really involved with a cult, or did he offend some powerful figure?" Zhao Dele asked in a low voice, filled with curiosity about the events of the day.
"Him?" Yan Liang interjected, though he tried to hide it, a hint of schadenfreude crept onto his lips. "He probably offended someone."
"Who did you offend? Someone from the inner city?"
"Otherwise what?"
"How did you offend them? You're all from the same place, you should know something about it, right?" Zhao Dele pressed.
Yan Liang hesitated, his eyes darting around as if he had reservations: "Well... it's hard to say."
Zhao Dele then turned his probing gaze to Tu Nan and Zhang Lin. Tu Nan silently shook his head, while Zhang Lin simply turned his face away; neither of them seemed willing to say more.
Just then, with a creak, the dormitory door was pushed open.
Wu Sheng appeared at the door carrying simple luggage.
The conversation inside the room abruptly stopped. Several pairs of eyes turned to him.
"Wu Sheng! You're back!" Yan Liang reacted the fastest, his face instantly breaking into a smile as he greeted him warmly.
It's like... Wu Sheng is a good friend he knows well.
Wu Sheng's gaze swept indifferently over everyone, lingering briefly on Yan Liang's face, but he didn't respond to the deliberately created warmth. He rudely walked straight to the last empty bunk in the dormitory and silently began to pack his things.
Tu Nan and Zhang Lin, who were familiar with the situation, were not surprised by this.
Zhao Dele, an outsider, watched this scene thoughtfully, his gaze shifting between Wu Sheng's indifferent back and Yan Liang's deliberate smile, but his face remained expressionless.
Soguli merely glanced at it, seemingly unconcerned.
After Wu Sheng finished tidying up, the dormitory fell into a brief silence. After a while, Yan Liang and the others seemed to have forgotten the incident and started chatting again, but their voices were unconsciously lowered.
"How much money did your family bring with you this time?"
"Just a few hundred yuan."
"A few hundred dollars? That probably won't be enough in the inner city, will it?"
"I heard our instructor mention that once you enter the martial arts academy, the academy will cover your food, lodging, and clothing, and you'll even receive a monthly stipend!"
"Such a good thing? I didn't even ask for details."
"Money is useful here, but only to a limited extent. I've heard that the truly valuable items related to martial arts cultivation can only be obtained by exchanging points."
"Points? About the same as the contribution points in our outer city?"
"I guess so, but I'm not sure for sure."
"Do you know how long we'll be trained at the martial arts academy? How's the competition? And what kind of jobs will we be assigned after the training?"
"Who knows..."
"It's nothing!" Yan Liang's voice carried a hint of smugness. "I know someone at this martial arts academy! His brother came from the inner city and joined a few years ago; he's already at the seventh level of Body Tempering! I'll find a chance to ask him tomorrow; he knows everything!"
"You have this kind of relationship?" Zhao Dele asked in surprise.
"That's right!" Yan Liang raised his chin, quite pleased with himself.
Throughout their conversation, Wu Sheng kept his back to them, his movements as steady as ever as when he made the bed. Only when Yan Liang mentioned an acquaintance did his fingers, which were busy tidying up, pause almost imperceptibly before resuming their work. This subtle reaction was noticed by Zhao Dele, who had been secretly observing him.
The martial arts academy was strictly managed, with little entertainment or leisure. As night deepened, the conversations gradually subsided. Everyone climbed into their beds, and in the unfamiliar environment and subtly flowing atmosphere, they drifted off to sleep, harboring various speculations about tomorrow's unknown training.
