Containing monsters? Call me 749 the God of Slaughter!

After leaving Chu Shanhe's office, Li Haotian went straight to the archives.

The archives are on the fifth floor, and double verification is required.

Li Haotian swiped his card and underwent an iris scan before the heavy metal door slowly opened.

Inside was a spacious room with rows of filing cabinets extending into the back.

The air was filled with the smell of paper and disinfectant.

An elderly administrator with gray hair sat behind a table at the entrance, wearing reading glasses and reading a newspaper.

"Li Haotian?" The old administrator looked up. "Director Chu has already spoken to him."

"The file you need is in section C, seventh row, number C-2019-047."

"You can only look at it here; you can't take it out or take pictures."

"Notes must be taken on special paper and must be handed in for inspection upon departure."

"clear."

Following the instructions, Li Haotian found the file box with the number.

The box isn't thick, containing about fifty pages.

He found an empty seat, sat down, and opened the file.

The first page is a summary of the events:

【时间：2019年10月23日，21:17】

Location: Laboratory 407, Building B, Physics Laboratory, Jiangcheng University

[Event Description: An unexplained energy fluctuation occurred in the laboratory, accompanied by a small-scale explosion]

No injuries were reported at the scene; 37% of the equipment was damaged. Preliminary tests detected residual abnormal radiation.

[Personnel involved: Li Mingyue (PhD student, project leader), Chen Jianguo (Professor, project advisor), etc.]

[Follow-up actions: Eliminate residual radiation, revise the public report to "circuit malfunction," and apply mild remedies to the individuals involved.]

The following are detailed technical reports, on-site photos, and personnel interview records.

Li Haotian read it carefully.

The technical report contains a lot of technical jargon.

The experiment was studying the macroscopic manifestations of quantum entanglement, but the equipment parameters were temporarily adjusted to include a set of "non-standard frequencies".

When the explosion occurred, monitoring equipment recorded minute oscillations in the curvature of space.

This is a typical characteristic of abnormal energy fluctuations.

He flipped to the personnel inquiry record.

Li Mingyue's part was very brief. She said that the experiment was carried out according to standard procedures, and the parameter adjustments were just a spontaneous inspiration.

When asked about the specific theories, she became vague.

The final conclusion of the file is:

The incident has been classified as a low-risk abnormal energy leak with no further impact; sealing it off is recommended.

Photos from the scene show the laboratory interior in a mess, but one detail caught Li Haotian's attention.

There is a blurry mark on the edge of a charred table, shaped like an inverted triangle with three dots inside.

Li Haotian stared at the enlarged photo with the inverted triangular marking.

According to the original owner's memories, he had seen that pattern in the notebook left by his sister!

That notebook should still be among my sister's belongings, kept by the school.

Li Haotian remained silent for a moment.

He muttered to himself, "Looks like I'll have to find some time to go back to school."

Just then, the communicator rang.

Li Haotian opened it and was immediately invigorated:

[New Quest Assignment: Quest Number E-0487, Infant Spirit]

Location: Xiangyang Lane, Old Town of Jiangcheng

[Description: For three consecutive nights, residents reported hearing a baby crying, and a night owl claimed to have seen a child wearing a red bib climbing over the wall, but investigation revealed that no baby lived in the alley.]

[Request: Investigate and detain]

[Investigators: Chen Feng, Lin Yu, Li Haotian]

Departure time: 21:00 tonight

Li Haotian replied in confirmation.

He looked at the mission description and clenched his fist.

The first official mission is here!

......

He gathered at the entrance of the equipment room at 8:50 p.m.

"Check the equipment," Chen Feng said.

Li Haotian checked his equipment: salt gun, hardener, tactical dagger, and small flashlight.

At this moment, Lin Yu handed him a device that looked like a flashlight.

"Spectral anomalies require special runic weapons or energy interference devices."

"This is a psionic jammer. Pressing the switch will release energy pulses of a specific frequency, which can temporarily materialize spirits for easier containment."

"What happens after containment?"

Chen Feng continued, "Take them back to the bureau's spirit containment unit and study their composition, behavioral patterns, and weaknesses."

"These studies can help us develop better containment methods and even early warning systems."

Li Haotian gripped the jammer in his hand.

The action plan once again embodies Bureau 749's philosophy: containment and research.

Instead of destroying it outright.

But he needs to kill those monsters to become stronger.

This contradiction will be encountered in tonight's mission.

"Let's go," Chen Feng said.

The three set off in a black SUV, heading towards the old town.

The city of Wuhan is brightly lit at night, and the streets are bustling with traffic.

Everything seemed so normal; no one knew what lurked in the shadows of this city.

Xiangyang Lane is an old street.

Both sides are old-style residential buildings with mottled walls and messy wires.

The alley was too narrow for cars to drive in, so they had to get out at the entrance.

The alley was unusually quiet at night; there wasn't even a chirping of insects.

The streetlights were dim, casting long shadows.

"The energy readings are fluctuating," Lin Yu said, looking at the detector in his hand, "around the corner ahead."

The three of them moved forward quietly.

Li Haotian gripped the salt gun tightly, his heart pounding.

This was his first official mission, and the monster he faced had upgraded from an F-rank drowned corpse to an E-rank spirit.

Just after they turned the corner, they saw the thing.

It was a baby who looked to be about two years old.

Wearing a red bellyband, with pale skin, she sat in the middle of the alley.

It didn't cry; it just sat quietly, looking up at the night sky.

This is clearly abnormal.

Li Haotian's pupils contracted even further.

In the field of vision of the weakness scan, the baby was surrounded by black resentment.

The resentment stretched outwards like tentacles, absorbing the yin energy of the night.

[Scanning in progress...]

[Target: Infant spirit (an aggregate of resentment)]

[Rank: E]

【Characteristics: Mental pollution type; can implant fear through crying, and fear will enhance its power】

Weaknesses: 1. Salt (can purify resentment); 2. Relics it is attached to (usually items from its previous life); 3. Calling its true name (if information about its previous life is known)

[Ability can be extracted after defeating the enemy]

Information about weaknesses flooded my mind.

At the same time, Chen Feng had already raised a device that looked like a net gun.

"Prepare for containment!"

Chen Feng whispered, "Lin Yu, prepare the jammer. Li Haotian, keep watch on the surroundings."

Li Haotian nodded, but his eyes remained fixed on the infant spirit.

He can see the weaknesses of infant spirits—salt, belongings, and their true names.

If you kill him, you will gain a new ability.

But should we disobey orders?

The infant spirit seemed to sense them and slowly turned its head.

Its eyes are completely black, with no whites.

He just stared straight at the three of them.

The next second, it suddenly opened its mouth!

No sound came out, but Li Haotian felt as if he had been pricked by a needle, and a sharp pain shot through his head.

Chen Feng and Lin Yu also frowned.

"It's a psychological attack!"

Lin Yu let out a low shout and pressed the jammer switch without hesitation!
