Containing monsters? Call me 749 the God of Slaughter!
Chapter 6 The Missing Sister, Chu Shanhe's Hint
The door to the director's office was ajar.
Li Haotian knocked on the door.
"Come in," came Chu Shanhe's voice.
Li Haotian pushed open the door and entered.
The office is large, but simply furnished.
A large desk with a full wall of bookshelves behind it.
A map of China and a world map hang on the wall, marked with thumbtacks of different colors.
Chu Shanhe sat behind his desk, looking at a document.
He wasn't wearing a uniform today, but rather a simple white shirt and black trousers, yet his air of authority remained undiminished.
"Sit down." Chu Shanhe gestured to the sofa.
Li Haotian sat down, his back straight.
Chu Shanhe put down the documents, got up and walked to the coffee table, personally brewed two cups of tea, and handed one to Li Haotian.
"Don't be nervous, this isn't a formal conversation, just a chat."
Chu Shanhe sat down opposite him and took a sip of tea: "How was your first day on the job?"
"Still getting used to it."
Li Haotian spoke frankly, "The 749th Bureau seemed very professional in dealing with those monsters."
Chu Shanhe chuckled, the scar making his smile look somewhat sinister: "Because all the unprofessionals died."
"In the 60 years since the establishment of Bureau 749, the highest casualty rate reached 40%, but now it is controlled below 15%. This is experience gained by sacrificing lives."
Li Haotian gripped the teacup tightly.
"I've read the report on your performance last night," Chu Shanhe said, getting to the point.
"Using salt to kill drowning corpses is a clever idea, but this is not standard procedure in the department."
What is the standard procedure?
"Take them in." Chu Shanhe put down his teacup.
"Abnormal organisms have great research value."
"We establish containment facilities to study their characteristics, weaknesses, and behavioral patterns."
"Killing is a last resort and should only be used when containment is impossible or the threat level is too high."
Chu Shanhe looked at him: "Your ability is very special."
"While weakness perception may not have any actual combat capability, it is extremely useful in containment operations."
"Knowing the weaknesses allows us to design safer containment plans."
Li Haotian paused for a moment, then asked, "Director Chu, what will the department do if the containment risk is too high?"
"That depends on the specific circumstances."
Chu Shanhe stood up, walked to the bookshelf, pulled out a folder, and handed it to Li Haotian: "Take a look at this."
Li Haotian opened the folder.
Inside were several photos and some reports.
The photo shows the interior of a cave with strange murals on the walls.
The report also documented an archaeological accident in which an entire archaeological team disappeared after entering an ancient tomb.
Seven days later.
One of the bodies was found on the riverbank 30 kilometers away. The cause of death was that all the blood had been drained from the body, but there were no wounds on the surface.
"This is a case from three years ago, and I personally led the team to handle it," Chu Shanhe said calmly.
"There was something in the ancient tomb that we eventually called the Blood Corpse, a Class B anomaly."
"In order to contain it, we lost four people and seven were seriously injured."
"Is containment successful?" Li Haotian asked.
"Successfully, they are now being held in Containment Facility Number Seven."
Chu Shanhe sat back down in his chair: "But the price is high."
"If we had chosen to kill them then, the casualties would likely have been much lower."
"But this means there will be no opportunity for research."
Li Haotian flipped through the report, and his finger paused when he saw the list of casualties.
Chu Shanhe looked at him meaningfully: "What I want to tell you is that ideals are important, but reality is complicated."
"Your abilities are very valuable, and the bureau will focus on developing you."
Li Haotian paused for a moment, then nodded and said, "I understand."
Chu Shanhe nodded and changed the subject: "Also, there are some things I need to confirm with you regarding your background check."
Chu Shanhe mentioned the background check.
Li Haotian's heart skipped a beat.
"You are an orphan. Your parents died in a car accident when you were ten years old, and you were raised by your older sister, Li Mingyue."
Chu Shanhe looked at another document in his hand: "Li Mingyue is four years older than you and disappeared three years ago."
"At the time, she was 26 years old and a doctoral candidate in the Physics Department of Jiangcheng University."
Li Haotian's fingers clenched slightly.
These memories belonged to the original owner of the body, but after merging, they also became his memories.
He remembered what Li Mingyue looked like: long hair, glasses, and always had a gentle smile.
"I know this is painful, but I still need to ask," Chu Shanhe said calmly.
"Did your sister mention anything unusual to you before she went missing?"
"Or, have you seen anything strange at her place?"
Li Haotian tried hard to recall: "In the months before she disappeared, she often stayed up late, saying that the projects in the lab were very important."
"Once I went to the school to find her and saw some strange drawings on her desk, with weird patterns that looked like magic circles."
"I asked her at the time, and she said it was a physical model."
"Are the blueprints still there?"
"After she went missing, all her belongings were seized by the police."
Li Haotian paused, then suddenly asked, "Director Chu, could my sister's disappearance also be related to those monsters?"
Chu Shanhe did not answer directly: "Three years ago, a minor accident occurred in the physics department laboratory of Jiangcheng University. The official explanation was that a circuit malfunction caused a small-scale explosion."
"But our monitoring equipment recorded abnormal energy fluctuations, and your sister was in that lab at the time."
Li Haotian felt his throat was dry.
"So, there is indeed a possibility that something is amiss." Chu Shanhe closed the folder.
"The investigation three years ago was incomplete, and now you've encountered another unusual event and become an Awakened One."
"Given the close blood relationship between you and your sister, this is worth reconsidering."
"Because people involved in unusual events can easily trigger subsequent unusual events."
"Could you reopen the investigation?"
"Theoretically, it's possible, but it requires justification and resources."
Chu Shanhe looked at him: "You're a trainee investigator now, with very low authority."
"But if you level up and accumulate enough contribution points, you can apply to reopen the investigation of a specific case."
"For example, your sister's disappearance case."
This was the condition for the exchange, and Li Haotian understood.
"I do," he said.
"Very good," Chu Shanhe stood up. "You can go to the archives and retrieve the files from the Jiangcheng University laboratory accident three years ago to get a better understanding of it."
"I've temporarily upgraded your privileges. If you remember anything after reading this, you can come find me directly."
"Yes."
"Go, and remember, the contents of the archives are confidential and must not be disclosed."
As Li Haotian emerged from Chu Shanhe's office, his eyes gleamed.
He felt that Chu Shanhe's words just now seemed to be hinting at something.
Chu Shanhe was clearly emphasizing the 749 Bureau's containment philosophy.
But then he showed him the ancient tomb incident from back then, saying something ambiguous like "ideas are important, but reality is complicated."
She also proactively revealed things about his sister to him.
This made Li Haotian feel that Chu Shanhe... seemed to be trying to win him over?
Remembering what Zhang Jiuxuan had said before, that Chu Shanhe was a pragmatist, a glint flashed in Li Haotian's eyes.
"A hands-on approach? That suits me quite well!"
