My Terrible Life in Those Years
40. Which bastard did this?
I was stunned for almost a minute.
Then he blurted out, "Which bastard did this?"
She didn't answer, burying her head in the pillow, from which came faint sobs.
I really don't have a way to deal with or resolve this kind of thing.
"That's enough water, time to take your medicine!"
She regained some strength, and I gently helped her lift half of her head so she could take the medicine with water.
Then, the room fell silent for a moment.
"Do you look down on me?" she said in a low voice.
In the empty room, I heard it clearly. I was startled when it was suddenly asked that question.
"No, no, I didn't mean to look down on you, I just think that your man is a jerk! You're in this state, and he doesn't even come to be with you?" I stammered.
Tears were clearly visible streaming down her face.
"Tell me his phone number or address, and I'll help you find him to come and take care of you!" I said, a little angry.
Damn it, is this man even a man? His own woman is like this, and he doesn't even bother to look at her?
"He...he won't come!" These words were tinged with bitterness.
"Why? He just stopped caring about you?" I asked in surprise.
"You, just stop asking! Anyway, he won't care about me!" Judging from her expression, she must have gone to the hospital by herself today.
Damn, what kind of people did we run into?
"Okay, I won't ask. You should rest and recover your strength. I'll buy you some congee with preserved egg and lean pork later!"
She curled up and buried herself completely in the blankets!
I stood there silently on the floor for more than ten minutes, until I felt her breathing calm down. Then I gently lifted a corner of the blanket over her head to let her breathe. She had indeed fallen asleep, though she was probably still in pain; the muscles in her face were twitching constantly.
His hair was a little wet, and sweat was still dripping from his forehead.
I gave her a dry towel and placed it on her forehead, then remained silent for a while.
If there's nothing else to do for the time being, I'll go back to my room. I left her door slightly ajar, just in case she suddenly wakes up and needs something, so I can hear her immediately.
I moved a basin near her door and helped her wash the bloodstains off her clothes. Small patches of blood were washed away. I realized with a start that this must have been hers…
I don't know why, but my emotions are very complicated.
Such a helpful girl, yet she had to encounter something like this!
For some inexplicable reason, I remembered that huge dividing line at the street corner again:
On one side is heaven, on the other is hell.
On one side is darkness, on the other is light!
She woke up around 7:50. I bought her some porridge and fed her. After she finished, she regained some strength.
"Don't you have to work the night shift? Hurry up, you'll be late!"
I hesitated: "Can you manage alone?"
Under the light, her face was deathly pale from blood loss, but after a nap, her eyes regained some of their sparkle.
"Don't worry, this is nothing to me! You go ahead with your work. I'm fine!"
She's a strong girl!
I arrived at the barbecue stall at 8:20. I was late.
The way Xiao Luo looked at me was almost fiery.
I already had a bit of a problem with taking his prime shift, and now I'm so late and haven't taken over his shift, so he's been working an extra twenty minutes. No wonder he's getting impatient.
"Sorry, Xiao Luo, something urgent came up and I'm a little late."
"What's the use of saying sorry? I could have stayed half an hour late to leave work, I had plans with friends, and now I'm too late!" His pimple-covered face, coupled with his slightly angry expression, reminded me of a child who is constantly controlled by their parents and never gets to eat candy!
"I'm sorry, something urgent really came up today. How about this, I'll come over half an hour earlier tomorrow to take your shift, and that will be made up for the lost time!" I didn't even bother to calculate the difference between twenty minutes and half an hour.
Anyway, being late was my fault to begin with, so I'm not going to take advantage of that!
His expression softened slightly. He put down what he was holding, took off his apron, went inside to get the money, and left without even glancing at me!
I quickly tidied up and helped Uncle Ye prepare the ingredients.
Uncle Ye finally had a chance to say to me, "That kid's here again!"
I was talking to Xiao Luo and didn't notice what was going on inside the store.
Sure enough, Chengzai sat at the largest table with an air of authority, with Kang Ning and Wan Ning on either side of him, seemingly talking about something.
Today he also brought two friends with him, who sat at another table, eating and drinking beer.
"What does he mean? And why did he bring thugs with him today?" I asked Uncle Ye, puzzled.
"You little rascal, you're asking a question you already know the answer to."
I glanced inside with a disdainful smile: "Uncle Ye, do you know? My wallet was stolen last night?"
He didn't even raise his head, only uttering a soft "hmm," seemingly someone who wasn't surprised by anything.
"There was also a note inside!"
Uncle Ye finally reacted and glanced at me, but still didn't say anything.
"What's written inside is exactly what that kid told me yesterday!"
Uncle Ye finally understood, and holding the iron tongs, he turned the ingredients over in the charcoal fire.
"So what do you plan to do?"
Uncle Ye's expression was calm, and his tone was indifferent. He didn't ask about the specific process or details at all, but directly asked me what I planned to do.
Because from my few words, he knew that yesterday's incident must be related to Cheng Shao.
I labeled him: a tough guy!
"I haven't figured it out yet. Let's see what other tricks he has up his sleeve. Did he cause some trouble for the junior boss? He looks so annoyed and helpless."
Uncle Ye lit a cigarette and looked at the stall.
"Chengzai came over today and said that the village committee might want to renovate the four main streets. They're currently studying the matter, and if it's decided, this stall probably won't be able to operate anymore. So, the shop owner invited Chengzai over to see if there's any way to resolve this!"
My mind almost stopped working on the spot!
Damn it, I know this renovation project inside and out, how come it's completely different in Chengzai's mouth? This street has absolutely nothing to do with the renovation project, okay?
In an instant, I understood that he was using this incident to manipulate the small boss and Wan Ning, making them owe him a huge favor.
Originally, the young boss Kang Ning had intended to introduce his sister to him. This was perfect. As long as his sister agreed, the two of them could get married, and the business could be saved. In addition, the inheritance rights in the village would definitely be secured. It was a win-win-win situation.
I've calmed down now. If it's just this, it's not a big deal at all!
I'd like to see what attitude Kang Ning, the young boss, and Wan Ning will have, and what choice they will make!
