Apocalyptic Hoarding Diary
Chapter 328 Unraveling the Pattern
The others who followed behind were also panting heavily, but their expressions clearly showed a smug satisfaction, as if they had "gotten it done."
Xu Xiaoyan raised an eyebrow; it seemed the path was clear.
Sure enough, less than a minute later, the sound of a car starting up came from ahead.
At first, there were only a few scattered sounds, but then more and more came, and the red taillights began to move, one after another, slowly moving forward.
The traffic finally started moving.
Xu Xiaoyan perked up, sat up straight, and started the car.
Her pickup truck followed the car in front, inching forward slowly, but at least it was moving.
Ten minutes later, the speed increased to 20 km/h. Twenty minutes later, it was able to drive normally.
She quickly drove up to the main gate.
The iron gate was larger than it appeared in the photos; the gate was very tall and wide enough for two cars to pass side by side.
The door was open, but Xu Xiaoyan noticed a detail—there was no handle on the door.
She deliberately slowed down to observe carefully.
Traditional large iron gates, whether pushed or pulled, will have handles, door knockers, or at least a place to grab on.
But this door was different; the edges of the door leaf were smooth, and there were no traces of locks or latches on the doorposts.
She looked up and saw a small, black, square device above the doorway with a flashing red light on it.
Electronic lock.
This door is electronically controlled.
In other words, the door was not opened manually, but through some kind of control system.
Who has the authority to open such a door? It must be the military. After they left, they didn't close the door; instead, they left it open.
Her mind raced.
What does this mean? It means that the military has given the public a chance; they have set up activation instructions so that later entrants can also pass through.
This is a door, and also a signal.
Of course, they won't wait, they won't take care of you, they won't take responsibility. It's your business if you catch up, and it's also your business if you can't. They've just opened this door; the rest is up to you.
Xu Xiaoyan stepped on the gas and slowly drove through the gate.
The doorway was very dark, without any light, and all the vehicles turned on their headlights to see where they were going.
There were many cars ahead, one after another. She maintained a steady speed, not daring to go too fast or too slow, and followed the taillights of the cars in front.
The underground passage was more spacious than she had imagined, wide enough for three cars to drive side by side, and its height was astonishing.
When she drove her small truck with its raised roof in, there was still a large gap overhead.
She looked up through the car window and could see a dense network of pipes and cables on the ceiling, some thick, some thin, some new, some old, crisscrossing each other.
After driving for about ten minutes, another large gate appeared in front of us.
Just like the previous one, it was a huge metal door. All the cars were turning right, going around the door, and turning into another passage.
Xu Xiaoyan followed the car in front, turned the steering wheel, and turned.
Once she stepped out of the gate, she realized that she seemed to have entered a large, gray tunnel.
This tunnel is different from the one we just passed. Although the previous passage was spacious, you could still see the walls and the ceiling.
But when she thought of this tunnel, all she could think of was the word "spectacular." It was very open and very long, so long that as far as the eye could see, it was all a hazy gray expanse.
Xu Xiaoyan squinted and looked ahead, trying to see the end of the tunnel, but she couldn't see anything except endless traffic.
She had a feeling that this was no ordinary underground passage; it might be some kind of large-scale project, some kind of underground trunk line connecting the entire country.
After driving for about twenty minutes, the scenery in the tunnel remained unchanged.
Just then, a cry of surprise suddenly came from ahead.
The sounds were coming from the cars in front. Many people were shouting, men and women. The voices came through the car windows, and although they were muffled, you could hear the surprise and astonishment in them.
Immediately afterwards, she saw several cars ahead with their windows open, people sticking their heads out to look ahead, and others taking pictures with their phones.
Xu Xiaoyan squinted and looked ahead.
About two hundred meters to the right, a large gate is slowly opening.
The door was very similar to the two doors she had passed through before, but the difference was that this door opened automatically.
With no one around and without any intervention, the door started moving on its own, silently and slowly sliding open to both sides.
The door moved very slowly and steadily, as if controlled by some precise force.
As the gap in the door widened, the scene inside gradually became visible—it was also a tunnel.
Xu Xiaoyan stared at the door, her gaze moving upwards.
Above the door is a huge sign.
It is the letter C.
She paused for a moment, her mind racing.
If this door is C, then the door she just came out of, if I'm not mistaken, should be B.
She remembered the two doors from before, the automatic opening devices, the red light above the door, and the electronic lock.
If her guess is correct, then this tunnel connects every district of the underground city.
Normally it's not open to the public, or only known to certain people, but now the military has opened it, allowing anyone who wants to leave to pass through.
But the question is—which door should I go out through to get to the ground?
She didn't know, she didn't even know where she was driving, she was just following the flow of traffic ahead.
This tunnel should have gates corresponding to areas D and E, but it probably won't open immediately because the time isn't right yet!
She stepped on the gas and sped up a bit. The gasps in front gradually subsided, the open car windows closed again, and the traffic continued forward.
Xu Xiaoyan glanced at the rearview mirror.
Vehicles began to appear at the gate of Area C, and cars started driving out.
She looked away and continued driving.
Xu Xiaoyan drove along the flow of traffic, and after about two days, she had roughly figured out the pattern.
The bus departs promptly at 6:00 AM, with all vehicles starting to move forward simultaneously.
Around noon, we stopped for a one-hour break. During that hour, some people got off the bus to stretch their muscles, some ate a few bites of dry food, and some dozed off in their seats.
We stopped at 10 p.m., and that stop lasted all night.
There was no one directing or organizing, but everyone was following this rule.
Xu Xiaoyan guessed that this must be a rule set by the military, with them leading the way and setting the pace.
Those who followed, whether they were clever enough to guess or simply went with the flow, all unconsciously did the same.
There was nowhere to replenish supplies in the tunnel; there were no gas stations, no shops, no water sources, and no toilets.
Everyone was consuming what they had in their cars—fuel, water, food—and gradually depleting it.
