Chapter 15 The Reaction of the Human High Command
Tianjing, the seventh conference room on the third basement floor of the National Emergency Command Center.
There was a peculiar quiet in the air, the sound of the high-efficiency filtration system operating, mixed with the low hum of the server rack.
The meeting room has no windows; all four walls are made of a special material that can be switched to display screens at any time. At this moment, a soothing dynamic forest scene is being displayed to alleviate the psychological pressure caused by long, enclosed meetings.
The long conference table was filled with people, including military representatives, several academicians from the Academy of Sciences, and officials from security and intelligence agencies. The document bags in front of them were all marked with the word "Top Secret".
On the giant screen occupying an entire wall at the front of the conference room, meticulously edited live broadcast clips were being played in split-screen format.
Lin Dao squatted by the stream, carefully treating the Growlithe's wounds with orange berries and bandages, his movements as gentle as if he were handling a fragile treasure.
He pointed to the Caterpie on the tree trunk and calmly stated the common knowledge that "Bug-type Pokémon evolve quickly."
In a clearing in the forest, he slowly approached the family of Gloydius, put down the tree fruit, stepped back, and raised his hands.
He grabbed the terrified Li Hao, almost lifting him off the ground, and escaped the Beedrill's pursuit at an astonishing speed.
Finally, at dusk, the campfire leaps, Growlithe keeps watch, Oddish sways its leaves, Kangaskhan gently caresses its cub, and Pichu and Zigzagoon play by the tent… a tranquility that transcends species boundaries.
When the scene finally freezes on Lin Dao looking directly into the camera and saying, "They are not monsters," the woman chairing the meeting gently taps the polished tabletop.
Zhao Lan, who chaired the meeting, looked to be in her forties. She had short, neat hair and sharp eyes. She was once the youngest director-general in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Three months ago, she was urgently transferred to the newly established "Disaster Response Affairs Bureau," where she is now headed by Zhao Lan.
At this moment, there were three documents of different thicknesses in front of her.
"Everyone," Zhao Lan's voice wasn't loud, but it had a clear quality that could penetrate all noise. She opened the folder in front of her marked with the bright red word "Top Secret".
"This is the first edition of the 'Forest Road Files' compiled by the intelligence department." She opened the thinnest document in front of her.
"Li Hao, the livestreamer, is a 26-year-old local resident of Chengdu. He has no criminal record, his mother suffers from a chronic illness, and his financial situation is average. His motive for profiting through livestreaming is clear, and his background is clean."
She turned a page, her tone slightly changing: "We can't find any identity information about the key figure, Lin Dao."
"There are no household registration records, no education records, no medical records, and no entry or exit records. Based on the traces, it seems that this person appeared out of thin air in the suburbs of Chengdu three days ago."
"What about facial recognition?" a middle-aged military officer asked, frowning. "Cross-referencing with national and even international databases?"
The young official in charge of technology immediately pulled up the data interface: "We've been conducting continuous comparisons for 72 hours. The highest facial feature matching rate is 67%, but that's for a child who went missing ten years ago; the bone age doesn't match. All other matching rates are below 30%. We can confirm that he's not in any of our databases."
An elderly academician with white hair pushed up his glasses, revealing sharp eyes behind the lenses.
"That's one of the key points." The representative from the biological department switched screens to display a complex genome map and analysis report.
"The biological samples obtained through special channels mainly consisted of skin flakes and hair residue from items he had come into contact with. Preliminary sequencing showed that their DNA structure was 99.97% similar to that of Homo sapiens on Earth."
"However, subtle differences were found in several non-coding regions and telomeres, with telomere length and telomerase activity being unusually stable, far exceeding the levels of their peers."
He paused, then added, "As for strength and speed, there are two possible explanations. One is that the physical attributes of humans from another world are inherently superior to ours. The other is that he has undergone special training or modification. Currently, we lean towards the former, because his muscle density and skeletal structure tests are normal, with no obvious signs of modification."
"So, what's the message he brought?" Another bespectacled civilian official pushed up his glasses.
"About those... 'Pokémon'? That word is going viral online right now."
The large screen switched to display a series of high-definition images: Arbok, Pikachu, Butterfree, Kangaskhan, Beedrill, Magikarp…
Each image is accompanied by a dense array of data, including body length and weight, sighting location, attack history, capability assessment, and threat level.
"Based on the information provided by Lin Dao and a comparison with our existing observation data," the head of the intelligence analysis department stood up, his voice steady but his pace rapid.
"It can be confirmed that these beings, which we collectively call 'abnormal creatures,' do indeed match the characteristics of the 'Pokémon' he described. More importantly!"
He switched the screen and played a comparison video.
On the left is footage of actual combat recorded by the military: a group of soldiers encountered bee hornets while patrolling in the mountains. In a panic, they opened fire, which triggered a frenzied attack by the swarm of bees, resulting in five casualties. They were forced to use flamethrowers to clear the area, which caused the entire forest to catch fire.
On the right is footage from the forest trail livestream: upon spotting the Queen Beedrill, she calmly retreated, using the terrain for cover, and ultimately escaped unharmed. The entire process took less than two minutes.
"If we had known this knowledge three months earlier," the analyst's voice grew heavy, "the casualties from the Mexican volcano attack could have been reduced by at least 70%."
A brief silence fell over the meeting room. The events in Mexico had been a thorn in everyone's side for the past few months, not out of mourning for their neighbor, but out of fear of what would happen if such a force appeared on their own soil.
Zhao Lan opened the second document in front of her, the one of medium thickness as well. The first page had a prominent title:
Preliminary Analysis Report (Top Secret) on the Otherworldly Entity Codenamed "Forest Path" and its Claimed "Pokémon" Creature
The second page contains the associated file index:
Progress Report on the Analysis of Global Synchronous Anomaly Information Flow During a Cataclysmic Event (Top Secret)
Preliminary Analysis of the Anomalous Energy Entity "Video Player" (Top Secret)
"Three months ago," Zhao Lan's voice was exceptionally clear in the quiet conference room.
"While unidentified creatures have appeared around the world, two other things are happening."
She gestured to the technicians to bring up the third set of images. A blurry video appeared on the screen, showing an emergency meeting of national leaders where a silver, streamlined object suddenly appeared out of thin air on the conference table. The object had a smooth surface, no interfaces or buttons, yet it projected holographic images without any human intervention.
"This object, which we've tentatively named 'video player,'" Zhao Lan said.
"It has a highly similar energy signature to the pendant around Lin Dao's neck, which he calls the 'Gene Wedge'."
The image zooms in, focusing on the neck of the forest path.
The details of the wedge-shaped silver pendant are clearly visible. The blue gemstone set in the center seems to have fluid slowly rotating inside, and the seemingly decorative patterns on the surface reveal a complex geometric structure at certain angles.
