Chapter 13 Taking Harry for Special Training
Bai Lin turned to Harry and said, "I'll try to use only the basic spells from my first and second years."
As the ghoul drew closer, Harry gripped his wand tightly with both hands in tension. The white werewolf grinned, half-blocking Harry's path, ready to attack at any moment.
But Bai Lin had no intention of bothering the summoned beasts. Without turning his head, he pointed at the ghoul and said, "Leg Lock!"
The ghoul's forelimbs seemed to be bound by an invisible chain, causing it to fall forward and smash its head onto the gravel path, breaking several teeth in the process.
Just as the ghoul got up again and opened its blood-red maw to bite Bai Lin, Bai Lin easily dodged and slashed the ghoul's back with his right-hand longsword, destroying the ghoul's entire central nervous system. The ghoul lay on the ground, clawing wildly, but could not get up no matter what.
"When a ghoul is running on all fours, you can use the Leg-Locking Charm to lock its forelimbs, and its spine is its weak point. You can use the Divine Edge Charm to break its spine, but of course, using a sword is more flexible and faster." Bai Lin said to Harry while sealing the ghoul, and he added in his mind: You might not believe it, but I just figured this out.
"Lockmert Mortis! (Leg-Locking Charm)" Harry aimed at a ghoul lunging from the entrance of the zombie village and finally succeeded in locking the ghoul's forelimbs. This was his third attempt; the Leg-Locking Charm was difficult to pronounce and required aiming precisely at a moving target, making it far more challenging than he had imagined. He was curious why Bai Lin only needed to pronounce such short syllables, attributing it to Bai Lin's years of training and mastery of the spell's intricacies.
While explaining the sword-wielding techniques of the wrist, Bai Lin shattered the neck bone at the back of the ghoul's neck. This was purely to avoid the horrific sight of blood spurting after decapitation that would frighten the children. He then immediately used a sealing technique to clear the area. After sealing 7 ghouls, the "Zombie" section was successfully lit up on the blank page of the encyclopedia, and Bai Lin was rewarded with two points of magic power. Bai Lin was overjoyed.
Harry assumed that Bai Lin's smile meant he was satisfied with his spell, which boosted his confidence considerably. Moreover, Bai Lin didn't seem to have any of the seriousness one would expect from a professor; instead, he seemed like an older brother taking him on an adventure. This reminded Harry of Ron's two mischievous brothers, Fred and George, who had taught him many prank spells.
That's how kids are; they might never be able to pronounce a spell correctly in a proper class, but they can learn a prank spell after hearing it only once or twice.
"Lockmert Mortis!" Harry cast the spell again at the ghoul that charged out from behind a barn, but his aim was off, and he failed to lock the ghoul's forelimbs. In desperation, he shouted, "Tooths on a club!"
The ghoul's fangs suddenly grew to almost a meter long, tripping his forelimbs and causing him to fall to the ground, where he was once again finished off by Bai Lin with a single sword strike.
Bai Lin looked at the ghoul's unusually long front teeth and couldn't help but laugh, saying, "Not bad, that's a quick thinking move!"
Harry swallowed hard. "You're not angry with me, sir?"
Bai Lin waved his hand and said, "Why should I blame you? Spells are just tools. Tools are only distinguished by whether they work or not. If they work, then they are the right spells. If one day you can subdue Voldemort with a prank spell, I would be very happy to see that scene, haha. Come on, let me see what other skills you have!"
"Incochio! (Grow Larger Charm, lasts only a short while)" Harry pointed at a rock in front of a ghoul and cast a spell. The rock instantly grew much larger, and the ghoul crashed into it, almost killing itself. Bai Lin couldn't help but give Harry a thumbs up. The children's thinking was indeed very broad. He stepped forward and finished it off with a single sword strike.
However, their battle alerted many ghouls in the village. Bai Lin didn't want to be surrounded by hundreds of ghouls. A powerful wizard isn't trained in a day. He decisively took Harry and left, hiding on a small hill a mile away.
As dusk fell, Bai Lin magically produced some food, which he shared with Harry to stave off hunger. Then he asked, "Do you know the trick to nighttime combat?"
Harry, with his ears perked up, ate his bread while staring intently at Bai Lin.
Bai Lin pointed to the magical torch he had planted at the foot of the hill and said, "Always keep yourself in the shadows and let the enemy be in the light. After you finish eating, get some sleep. I'll keep watch for the first half of the night, and you keep watch for the second half!"
After finishing his bread and drinking a cup of diluted black tea, Harry wrapped himself in his robes, leaned against a tree trunk, and fell asleep. He was utterly exhausted, more so than if he had participated in two consecutive Quidditch matches. But he was quite content with this life. He could feel his spells becoming smoother and more accurate, and he could even put some of his whimsical ideas that he wouldn't normally dare to use into practice. Perhaps this was what it felt like to become stronger.
Bai Lin lit the magical torch, instantly illuminating the area below the hill. He could spot any approaching ghouls from afar. The first half of the night was relatively peaceful; only three ghouls came. Two circled the torch twice, saw no living beings, and left. The remaining ghoul headed up the hill. Bai Lin, hidden in the shadows, petrified it, then stepped forward and finished it off with a single sword strike. He sensed the ghoul was slightly weaker than the low-level werewolves in the Forbidden Forest and posed no threat to him now.
In the middle of the night, he woke Harry up and handed him the longsword. Bai Lin took out a large pair of headphones, put them on, and said that he wouldn't get up no matter how loud the noise was, then went back to sleep.
Harry hid in the woods, staring intently down the mountain. When it was dawn and Bai Lin stretched and got up, there were already five or six ghoul corpses by the torches at the foot of the mountain. Harry looked exhausted, clearly having had a very difficult few hours.
After another day and night, the two had lured out almost all the ghouls in the zombie village. They played guerrilla tactics around the village until their magical energy felt completely depleted and they could no longer cast a spell. At that point, no more ghouls could stand up.
The Phantom Fiery Campfire of the Horror Tour Company blazed on time, and Bai Lin and his companion returned to Diagon Alley. They wondered what Robert's reaction would be after they had "massacred" the zombie village.
Back at the Leaky Cauldron, the two rested well for a day. Harry couldn't wait to run to Flourish and Blotts and bought all the third-year textbooks, including the book "Intermediate Spells." Harry studied the spells in it with great enthusiasm, forgetting to eat or sleep, and his enthusiasm for learning was unprecedented.
Upon returning to the Horror Tour company, Bai Lin chose the Vampire Castle tour, but Robert insisted on a price of 50 Galleons before allowing them to stay in the castle for 3 days.
Harry insisted on paying the bill, remembering that this little guy was quite wealthy, with tens of thousands in savings in Gringotts, so Bai Lin didn't stand on ceremony with him.
The vampire castle is a Gothic castle nestled deep in the mountains. Outside the castle is a dense cedar forest, which doesn't look like Europe but is more like Kannada. The castle gates are tightly closed and cannot be opened even with a lock-picking spell, so Bai Lin and his companion have no choice but to camp outside the castle.
