Myth: I am God!
Chapter 115 The Battle of Mycenae
Chapter 115 The Battle of Mycenae
Outside the eastern forest, the Mycenaean fortress.
This ancient fortress was once a peaceful little city-state.
Fifty years ago, during the reign of the former King of Argos, a large army besieged the city, and the small city-state fell in just a few days. The enemy army slaughtered all the people and livestock in the city.
The former King of Argos transformed Mycenae into a fortified stronghold capable of housing tens of thousands of troops, hoping it would serve as a fulcrum and a springboard for his conquest of Middle-earth...
However, the former King of Argos could never have imagined that the fortress that embodied his ambitions would become so important.
It will not be until fifty years later that it will truly play its role. This is an vanguard legion mainly composed of Athenian Confederate soldiers and supplemented by Corinthian soldiers.
More than 3000 heavily armed spearmen, 800 bronze chariots driven by one person each, and more than 3000 longbow archers.
More than 2000 auxiliary soldiers. There were also more than 1000 Corinthian soldiers, dressed in black battle robes and wielding magical weapons, guarding the very center of the formation.
More than a dozen flags, symbolizing the various states, rose one after another from the dust on the horizon.
The army's march raised dust, as if it were on the plains at the edge of the horizon.
A massive flood surged in...
Mycenaean fortress.
The vanguard chapter that followed Perseus's orders to be the first to set up camp and oversee intelligence was not large.
There were only a little over a thousand people.
And because the enemy's speed exceeded everyone's expectations, many of the catapults in the fortress were never used...
The officer gazed at the densely packed enemy in the distance, his heart filled with anxiety, and he gripped his spear tightly.
He would occasionally ask the messenger beside him, "When will His Highness's reinforcements arrive?"
"The enemy is already at the city gates..."
'
The messenger, holding a carrier pigeon, took a message from its leg: "At least one day."
"Canaan is still some distance away."
"His Highness is leading an army of ten thousand, abandoning all provisions and supplies, and is rushing here at full speed..."
"
"His Highness also said that we must hold Mycenae fortress for one day at all costs."
"6
'
The officer took a deep breath upon hearing this...
Looking at the enemy troops slowly closing in on the wilderness.
He then glanced at the soldiers in the fortress who seemed somewhat panicked upon seeing the enemy.
His eyes gradually turned piercing.
He snatched the horn from the messenger and blew it with all his might. The piercing war horn echoed endlessly between the fortress walls, and the officer, spear in hand, shouted with all his might—
"For the sake of the Lord's nations..."
'
"For the glory of Argos..."
'
"For God and the Messiah!!"
"Cowardice and weakness do not belong to Argos!"
The soldiers, facing war for the first time, were initially somewhat fearful.
But upon hearing the bugle call and the officers' impassioned shouts, a surge of courage seemed to well up within them. This belief stemmed from the heroic legends they had heard and witnessed since childhood, and from their deep love for their country... And so, the greenhorns gripped their spears tightly, took deep breaths, and stood up straight.
They are Argos, the people of heroes, the people of God.
at this time.
The enemy has reached the fortress.
From within the combined forces of Athens and Corinth, the soaring sound of horns, like that of an eagle, rang out. As the horns sounded, war drums beat, battle flags waved, and the shouts of the ten thousand allied soldiers below the city shook the heavens, like a mountain collapsing and the sea splitting...
And then, with a command from the war commander...
The war has begun.
Thousands of allied archers, using longbows and arrows made by the finest artisans from the northern states of Middle-earth, advanced with the army, weaving behind the shields of heavily armored soldiers, firing at the Argos soldiers in the fortress.
The Argos soldiers, numbering only one thousand, were scattered behind the battlements under the command of their officers. The enemy's arrows, like a storm, pierced the cracks between the bricks of the fortifications, their tails trembling slightly. They could only hide under cover, pulling out their cover when the rain of arrows subsided, to shoot arrows or throw javelins in retaliation.
Even though the soldiers were extremely careful, many were still struck in the arms or even in the eyes by enemy arrows as they pulled themselves out of cover...
They lacked sufficient manpower and the strength to turn the tide of the battle. Their only advantage was this dilapidated fortress. They faced an enemy ten times their size, well-equipped and outnumbered. They were ordered to hold this position for one more day, and their only hope of victory was—
courage.
The new recruits matured quickly in the war.
When someone dies beside you, you lose your naivety;
When two people around you die, you grow into a mature warrior;
When everyone around him had died, he became a valiant veteran.
When the enemy's arrows filled the outer walls of the fortress, even covering the watchtowers and battlements with a dense barrage... their offensive only paused slightly, as the first volley of arrows was nearly exhausted.
At this point, Mycenae's thousand soldiers had dwindled to only eight hundred.
The officer pulled an arrow from his shoulder, rose, and stared at the corpses of soldiers on the battlements and walls. His eyes were bloodshot, and a surge of grief and indignation welled up within him...
Under the relentless barrage of arrows, the Argos were barely able to mount an effective counterattack. They left behind over two hundred corpses, managing to hold off the army for only a morning.
And now...
The army was already at the city gates, and the fortress gates were about to be breached.
Mycenae is about to fall...
The officer's body was stiff and painful on one side, as if it were numb.
But he still supported himself with his spear and stood on the watchtower, under the banner of the Holy Cross.
Looking down from his vantage point, he surveyed the densely packed soldiers surging towards him on the ground.
He then looked at the remaining eight hundred soldiers, some wounded and others exhausted.
They were all looking at the officers under the battle flag, their faces and armor covered in blood, but their eyes were resolute and bright. Some of them may not have been baptized by Saint Zach in the temple.
But today... everyone has been anointed with blood, whether their own or that of their comrades.
"Warriors..."
'
The officer, pale-faced and blood trickling from his mouth, stood resolutely beneath the battle flag. With the last ounce of strength in his throat, he shouted to his soldiers, "My orders are... to hold Mycenae to the death!"
Tell me... are you willing to die?
The soldiers dodged the enemy's flying arrows, listening to the resounding pounding against the fortress gates below. After a moment of silence, one after another, in a noisy cacophony, they raised their weapons and shouted in response, "We are willing—"
'
The officer smiled upon hearing this, but then a deathly intent flashed in his eyes. With all his might, he ordered, "Open the city gates!"
Immediately, the ropes securing the fortress's gate were cut, and the massive gate collapsed, crushing a large group of enemy soldiers outside who were attempting to force their way through...
Amidst cries of agony, the enemy's heavily armored soldiers arrayed themselves outside the fortress.
With eight hundred Argos soldiers in the city.
They looked at each other across the fortress gate passage.
They could even clearly see the enemy's eyes and the dust on their faces.
And... the enemy's fear.
The officer, sword and shield in hand, jumped down from the watchtower.
He stood before eight hundred Argos soldiers.
He raised his spear high and roared, "In the name of the Messiah!"
Instantly.
Behind them, eight hundred Argos warriors raised their spears high.
He responded with a loud shout: "In the name of the Messiah!"
The shouts were deafening.
Even the soldiers in the front ranks of the allied forces were somewhat intimidated and dared not step forward.
However, under the commanding officer's sharp knife.
The Allied soldiers could only move forward, forward.
Even if hell lies ahead...
And just as the Mycenaean soldiers were engaged in close combat with the enemy—
The scouts of Corinth and Athens.
A war chariot came speeding towards them on the distant horizon.
A flag made of a lion's head was erected on the chariot.
The Holy Cross flag fluttered in the wind...
The scouts initially thought this was a sign of enemy reinforcements.
But no matter how they observe and wait.
They also found no soldiers or horses behind the chariots and battle flags.
They didn't even see the dust kicked up by the marching army.
When the scouts were forced to approach the chariot drawn by four fine horses and the figure on it, the allied scouts finally confirmed what they had seen: Perseus standing on the chariot, holding aloft the Lion King's banner.
He came alone from the east.
