Chapter 37 Past Events

"What are you trying to say?"

The night was hazy as Ning Mumu and Shi Yu walked along the path. There were no lights in the academy, so Ning Mumu walked slowly, often stepping on fallen leaves that made a crisp sound with each step.

Shi Yu lagged slightly behind Ning Mumu. They were close in age, but he was taller, nearly 1.8 meters, and followed closely behind the girl. To be precise, he simply enjoyed following Ning Mumu; watching her back gave him a sense of security.

In a daze, he remembered that three years ago, he had only seen Ning Mumu's back.

After walking for a while, Ning Mumu found a large rock to sit on, and Shi Yu sat down as well. Having spent so much time reminiscing, they had almost finished rehearsing in their minds.

"Sister, you might not remember me." Shi Yu looked up at the moon in the sky, which was very round and bright. He noticed that Ning Mumu was also looking at the moon. He continued, "Three years ago, you went to a small town."

Shi Yu's voice was soft, yet it stirred up memories for Ning Mumu from three years ago. Her memory was always excellent; she remembered details of events from years ago. But how could she not remember Shi Yu, such a distinctively melancholic young man?

Three years ago? Evil spirit masters roamed the borders, and nine-year-old her followed Grandpa Sword on his adventures, rescuing people wherever they went. It was a passionate and unforgettable time.

"Shi Yu, we met three years ago?" Ning Mumu looked at him questioningly. "Which town?"

"Shadowfall Town," Shi Yu said. "The evil spirit master killed many people. By the time you arrived, everyone in the town was dead, including me, but not me."

Ning Mumu was slightly surprised; why did Shi Yu's words suddenly sound so confusing? She remembered Luoying Town—a beautiful place with clear waters and lush mountains, but unfortunately, it was destroyed by evil spirit masters.

At that time, a large number of evil soul masters suddenly appeared at the border between the Heaven Dou Empire and the Star Luo Empire. They were brutal and were the same group of people who killed Ning Mumu's parents.

To eliminate them, various sects dispatched Soul Masters, with Sword Douluo being one of them. The death of Chen Yao remained a thorn in his side; without removing it, Sword Douluo's life would never be peaceful. He simply hadn't expected Ning Mumu to secretly escape. By the time Sword Douluo discovered this, Ning Mumu had already killed several evil Soul Masters.

Shadowfall Town was the first victim they visited, but they arrived too late; the town had already been completely destroyed by the evil spirit masters. Ning Mumu remembered clearly that there wasn't a single survivor in Shadowfall Town.

"I remember, Shadowfall Town," Ning Mumu said, "I checked carefully, and there wasn't a single survivor."

Her tone turned cold; Shi Yu couldn't possibly have survived. So, is the current Shi Yu from Luoying Town? Or rather, is he even "Shi Yu" anymore?

Shi Yu noticed Ning Mumu's emotions and said to himself, "Three years ago, when I first saw you, you had your long hair tied up and had an undeniable, refreshing fragrance. I had never smelled that scent before, but I remembered you."

"That day, I was drifting around, not knowing where to go." Shi Yu turned to look at Ning Mumu, saying each word clearly, "until I saw you. You collected the remains of the dead and gathered them in a large pit, performing a ritual for them all. At that moment, I felt a suction force, and I came to life, inside another person's body, and then I had a physical form."

The moon hung high, casting its pure white light gently upon the two of them. Shi Yu's eyes shone brightly as he continued, "You had just finished the ritual when the evil spirit master attacked. I remember, the first time you made a move, you kicked that evil spirit master away." That's why I recognized you at first glance.

"I was practically a corpse back then, I couldn't help you," Shi Yu said with some regret. "Then you killed all the bad guys. But you're gone."

"You were busy saving people in the next place, setting the bodies on fire, but you didn't know I was still alive," Shi Yu said. "You were the first person I saw, and for three years, all I wanted was to find you."

The moonlight shone brightly, casting shadows on Ning Mumu's face; she was excessively beautiful. However, she didn't know what to say. She stared intently at Shi Yu, remaining silent for a long time.

"You were reborn through possession," Ning Mumu said in a flat tone, revealing no emotion. She asked with certainty, "You have no memories, right?"

Shi Yu nodded. For the first time, he was somewhat sad. His thick eyelashes covered his slightly red eyes.

"I don't know. I've always been something that floats around," Shi Yu said calmly. "A long, long time ago, I wandered around the Douluo Continent, from one end to the other, from the ocean to the land... The scenery along the way was beautiful, but I couldn't touch it, I couldn't hear or see it, and I didn't know whether I was alive or dead. I was something that wasn't even human."

"Until I met you, the first sound I heard was your chanting for salvation, the first time I could see a person clearly, the first time I became a person."

Shi Yu lowered her head. "Before I met you, I was nothing. After I met you, I became a human being."

Every person is born with parents, knows they are human, can breathe, and can see the colors of the world. Newborn babies explore the world, are curious, and will live a life.

But Shi Yu was an exception. He wasn't quite a person, nor was he a soul; he was simply something that drifted. He was both an ordinary cloud in the summer breeze and a snowflake drifting in the cold winter. In the first half of his life, he had no memories, no friends, nothing at all. He was a speck of dust abandoned by the world, the most unusual and smallest of all the dust. No one knew him, and no one would save him.

In truth, Shi Yu had no idea the scenery was beautiful; he couldn't see it at all. In his eyes, the world was gray, silent, and lifeless.

All these changes originated three years ago.

A flawless version after careful inspection!

A vibrant splash of red adorned Shi Yu's world, along with a reverent prayer for salvation and a passionate, beautiful girl.

Shi Yu had no concept of beauty or ugliness. In his eyes, Ning Mumu was the first thing he saw, the standard, and the ceiling. From the very first moment she saw him, he kept the color red in his heart, missing her day by day, accumulating little by little, until his heart was completely filled with her.

"That time I set a fire, didn't it burn completely?"

Ning Mumu felt as if she were standing in Luoying Town three years ago. She piled up the corpses and, on the Douluo Continent, once again recited the familiar incantation for salvation.

In the past, she cared for her fellow Daoists, her fellow disciples, every ordinary person who died, and those who sacrificed themselves in the great battle. Now, the past reappears, like a heavy hammer striking her heart, stirring up a profound shock, causing ripples to spread through her soul.

She will not forget the prayers for salvation, for suffering will not end, and she will continue to strive for it forever.

But back then, she almost burned Shi Yu to death. Ning Mumu's heart suddenly trembled and started beating very fast.

The Thousand Ling Sect's Ancestral Motto: Enter the Thousand Ling Sect with the fundamental purpose of saving the world and helping humanity. Uphold the principles of Heaven and Earth, safeguard the lives of the people, protect the cultivation world, and never retreat!

In her past life, Ning Mumu, the junior sister of the Thousand Ling Sect, did it. In this life, she will too.

Unexpected, right? Updated at midnight!

I've been quite busy these past few days, and my exams didn't go very well either. This chapter doesn't quite capture the feeling I wanted to express. Any suggestions, everyone?

By the way, that section on ancestral precepts, "To establish a heart for Heaven and Earth..." is from Zhang Zai's "Four Sentences of Hengqu" from the Northern Song Dynasty.
