Chapter 145: Main Job: Student; Part-Time Job: Saving the World; Salary Settled in One Go
Most of the security tape inside the stadium has been removed, leaving only a small area of the central lawn for technicians to conduct a final inspection.
Jiang Nanyan had just finished her call with the command center when she turned around and saw Su Ming standing not far away.
She walked over, her gaze towards Su Ming somewhat complicated. Without him, she didn't know how chaotic this operation would have become.
Jiang Nanyan said, "Lin Xiaoyue and the others have been taken to the hospital for examination. They are fine, just a little frightened."
"Hmm," Su Ming responded without looking up.
"This time... honestly, thank you." Jiang Nanyan's tone was very sincere.
Su Ming finally looked up from his phone, turned off the screen, and put it back in his pocket.
"Officer Jiang, the work is done, how will I get paid?"
Jiangnan Yan's expression froze for a moment.
She knew the conversation would eventually circle back to money.
"You'll get your share." She sighed and pulled a bank card from her pocket. "The city bureau's special bonus and reward are all in here. The password is six zeros, which suits your style."
Su Ming took the card, didn't even look at it, and stuffed it directly into his pocket, the movement as smooth as if he were putting away a cafeteria meal card.
"It was a pleasure working with you." He nodded, turned and left, a standard way of leaving get off work.
"Wait a minute," Jiang Nanyan called out to him, "Aren't you curious how much is inside?"
Su Ming turned around, his expression calm.
"Once the work is done and the account is settled, the process is complete. The numbers don't affect the outcome."
After saying that, he waved his hand and left without looking back.
Jiang Nanyan watched his retreating figure disappear through the exit, momentarily lost in thought. Su Ming, however, had already crossed the final security perimeter, seemingly oblivious to the awe-inspiring yet curious gazes of the surrounding special police. Just as he stepped out of the stadium gate, a black Volkswagen parked on the roadside flashed its lights.
Li Changfeng leaned against the car door. When he saw Su Ming come out, he immediately stubbed out his cigarette and opened the back door.
"Back to school?"
"Um."
The car started and merged into the city's traffic.
No one spoke for a moment in the car.
Li Changfeng glanced at the back seat in the rearview mirror. Su Ming had already closed his eyes by the window, and his breathing had become long and even.
"Xiao Su," Li Changfeng cleared his throat, trying to ease the interrogation-like atmosphere, "Now that this 'part-time job' is over, you can finally take a break, right? Any plans?"
"Review." Su Ming didn't even open his eyes, only uttering two words.
"I mean long-term plans," Li Changfeng softened his tone, coaxing, "haven't you thought about changing your way of life? With your abilities, staying in school... is a waste of your talent."
Su Ming opened his eyes, looked at the receding lights outside the window, and calmly said, "My main job is as a student, and I do part-time work to better fulfill my main job."
Upon hearing this, Li Changfeng almost lost his grip on the steering wheel.
Which working person in this world has such a hardcore side job?
"The bigwigs at the West Mountain Command are practically fighting tooth and nail over your file!" Li Changfeng decided to take drastic measures. "Top-tier special operations unit, independent operations team, theater commander-level clearance—take your pick!"
Su Ming didn't react, but asked, "Is it a permanent position? Are the social insurance and housing fund contributions at the maximum level? Do you have weekends off? Is overtime pay triple? Is the food in the cafeteria good?"
Li Changfeng: "..."
He felt a sense of powerlessness, like playing music to a cow—no, even the cow was more enlightened than this kid.
"What are you talking about, the cafeteria! That's honor! That's the future!" he roared.
"Brother Li." Su Ming suddenly sat up straight and looked at him seriously. "My grandfather said that peace is a blessing. I take on part-time jobs because I want to earn some money, get rid of troubles, finish university peacefully, find a job, and live a peaceful life."
His tone was calm, and his expression was serious; he didn't seem to be joking.
Li Changfeng met those clean eyes in the rearview mirror, and all the words he wanted to say were immediately swallowed back. He suddenly understood.
Perhaps this is the kid's true thought. Those unbelievable actions, those earth-shattering "part-time jobs," might just be a way for him to eliminate distractions so he can continue to be a normal student in peace.
Having figured this out, Li Changfeng suddenly felt a bit dumbfounded.
His job as the "security captain" was to keep an eye on this tiger that could turn the battlefield upside down, to prevent him from causing trouble, and to prevent him from being provoked. But this tiger himself just wanted to bask in the sun and take a nap on campus.
The car slowly drove into the gate of Jiangnan University.
The campus was quiet at night, and the streetlights cast long shadows of the plane trees on both sides.
"We've arrived." Li Changfeng parked the car downstairs at the dormitory building.
"Thanks, Brother Li." Su Ming got out of the car.
"Wait a minute." Li Changfeng called out to him, took the worn canvas backpack from the passenger seat and handed it to him, "Your belongings."
Su Ming took the bag and carried it on his back.
"Get some rest," Li Changfeng said.
"Um."
Su Ming turned and walked into the lights of the dormitory building, his figure quickly disappearing from sight.
Li Changfeng sat in the car, lit a cigarette, and watched the lights in the dormitory building windows light up one by one and then go out.
Su Ming's words echoed in his mind.
Life must eventually return to normal.
He flicked his cigarette ash, started the car, and muttered to himself, "But your part-time job is making a bit too much noise..."
As the car drove out of the school gate, Li Changfeng picked up the encrypted walkie-talkie.
"Headquarters, the 'divine beast' has returned to its cage. It's in good condition, not throwing a tantrum, and looks like it's ready to sleep."
There was a moment of silence on the other end of the walkie-talkie, then a helpless voice came through: "Roger that. 9527, you should get some rest too."
