Although He Yun Shen said that, he still stood still and his gaze never left her.

The air around the hospital seemed to freeze, leaving only silence spreading silently between the two.

He Yun Shen opened his mouth several times and then closed it again, watching Bai Yi Shu carefully put away the leftover food container, before awkwardly squeezing out a sentence.

"Give me the trash after you finish eating."

He reached out his hand to her, but his fingertips were trembling slightly.

Bai Yishu handed him the lunchbox, and He Yunshen took it. His hand accidentally touched her fingers, and he pretended to walk nonchalantly toward the trash can.

"I'll throw it away, you get some rest."

When he returned after throwing away the trash, he saw Bai Yishu still sitting in the same spot, so he sat down next to her, keeping a distance that was neither too close nor too far.

"Aren't you going to take a nap?"

Bai Yishu didn't speak, she just shook her head.

He Yun Shen's gaze fell on the door of the intensive care unit, but he kept an eye on her out of the corner of his eye.

"Then... I'll stay here with you."

Bai Yishu finally raised her head.

Why?

"No reason."

He Yun Shen turned his head to look at her, his eyes filled with a complex mix of heartache and longing.

He pursed his lips slightly, and after a moment of silence, said in a low voice, "After all... we were together once."

Upon hearing this, Bai Yishu turned her head to the side, seemingly observing the situation in the intensive care unit, but in reality, she didn't want him to see her dejected expression.

Seeing that she remained silent, He Yunshen gave a self-deprecating smile and looked back at the door of the intensive care unit, and the atmosphere fell silent again.

After an unknown amount of time, he suddenly spoke, his voice somewhat hoarse.

"Bai Yishu..."

He paused, unsure of what to say.

Bai Yishu turned to look at him, and the moment their eyes met, all of He Yunshen's words caught in his throat, leaving only a perfunctory greeting.

"How are you?"

He regretted asking the question as soon as he finished, feeling that it was unnecessary and ridiculous.

Seeing that Bai Yishu only nodded, he felt even more distressed looking at her feigned strength. He opened his mouth, but could only utter a weak sound.

"That's good……"

His hands were clenched into fists, hidden in the shadows, his nails digging deep into his palms, as he tried to suppress his inner emotions with pain.

"Actually, you don't need to stay here with me."

Hearing her words, He Yun Shen felt a sudden, inexplicable pain in his heart, but his face remained indifferent.

"I said I do."

His attitude was stiff, his eyes revealed a stubbornness, his body leaned slightly forward, his elbows resting on his knees, and he stared intently at the door of the intensive care unit.

Bai Yishu didn't speak again. She leaned back in the chair in the corridor, and time passed by in silence.

Bai Yishu finally stood up, stretched her body, and looked at He Yunshen sitting to the side.

"It's late, why don't you go home?"

He Yun Shen glanced at the time; it was past midnight. He shook his head.

"I won't reply."

He looked up at Bai Yishu, his eyes still showing a hint of stubbornness.

"If you don't leave, I won't leave either."

Bai Yishu glanced at the intensive care unit again.

"I want to stay here."

He Yun Shen seemed to have anticipated her answer, and his expression remained unchanged.

"That's why I said I'd stay with you."

He Yun Shen got up and walked to a bench to lie down, stretching his long legs out a little. He closed his eyes, but his brows were furrowed.

"Call me if anything happens."

Bai Yishu sighed inwardly, looking at He Yunshen, such a big person, huddled in a chair, and felt a pang of heartache and helplessness.

She took a thin blanket out of her bag and gently covered him with it.

He Yunshen felt the warmth of the blanket on his body, and his body stiffened for a moment before relaxing. He didn't open his eyes, but his voice trembled.

"Thanks……"

He Yun Shen felt a mix of emotions. After all, the two people who were once so close were now so estranged.

Bai Yishu sat down on the other side. He Yunshen closed his eyes, listening to her soft breathing, his mind filled with countless thoughts. After a long while, he couldn't help but speak, his voice sounding exceptionally clear in the quiet night.

"Yi Shu... go to sleep for a while."

"I'm not sleepy."

"There's no point in trying to tough it out."

He Yun Shen sat up, patted the spot next to him, and his voice softened considerably.

"Come sit down, lean against me and take a nap."

Bai Yishu was stunned for a moment when she heard his words. Her gaze unconsciously drifted to He Yunshen's shoulder, and she immediately lowered her head to hide the unnaturalness in her expression.

"I'll just sit here."

He Yun Shen pursed his lips and lay back down.

"Whatever."

He Yun Shen pulled the blanket around himself, closed his eyes, but was wide awake, his ears constantly listening to her every move.

Silence returned to the surroundings. After a long while, He Yun Shen heard Bai Yi Shu's breathing gradually become steady. He slowly opened his eyes and gazed at her sleeping face in the dim light.

He hesitated for a moment, then quietly got up, carefully covered her with the blanket, and lingered his fingertips on her hair for a moment before quickly withdrawing them.

He gazed at Bai Yishu silently, as if time had stood still. Countless memories flashed through his mind, and a sharp, piercing pain shot through his heart.

The next day, He Yun Shen heard Bai Yi Shu wake up, but he kept his eyes closed and pretended to be asleep until her footsteps faded away before he slowly opened his eyes.

He sat up and straightened his clothes, his gaze falling on the door of the intensive care unit. He rehearsed in his mind what he would say to Bai Yishu, but when he heard footsteps, he forgot everything and could only pretend to be calm and look away.

He glanced at Bai Yishu casually.

"I'm back. What did the doctor say?"

Bai Yishu rubbed her temples.

"You're all better now. You can be transferred to a regular ward today."

"Okay, that's good."

Hearing this, He Yun Shen secretly breathed a sigh of relief, his tightly furrowed brows slightly relaxed, but he didn't know how to express his concern.

"Then you can breathe a sigh of relief once you turn around."

Bai Yishu nodded and looked up at He Yunshen.

"that……"

Seeing that she hesitated to speak, He Yun Shen's heart clenched instantly. Thinking that she wanted to send him away, he spoke first, his tone filled with a panic that he himself did not realize.

"I understand. Once your dad is moved to a regular ward, I'll... leave."

Bai Yishu remained silent for a moment. She didn't actually want to send him away, but it seemed like there was no reason for him to stay.

"Thank you for keeping me company last night."

He Yun Shen felt a sharp pain in his heart. He forced a smile that looked more like a grimace than a cry.

"You're welcome."

He put his hands in his pockets, looked down at the ground, and spoke in a low voice with a hint of bitterness.

"After all... this is all I can do."

Bai Yishu also looked down at the ground, unsure of what to say for a moment. After all, given their current status, it seemed inappropriate to try to persuade him to stay or ask him to do anything.

"Okay, you should go back and get some rest."
