Chapter 38: Opening a Small Shop
When they came home that evening, Dali's parents were surprised to find that she seemed to have gone back to how she used to be.
The two sisters were sitting in the yard, quietly discussing something. They stood up when they saw them return. "I've already prepared dinner, let's eat first."
She turned back and asked again, "Is Haizi coming back today too? I steamed some leavened buns for him, they were so good."
Yu's father looked at Yu Meng with a puzzled expression, "Your eldest sister has finally come to her senses."
"My older sister has a great personality, unlike me," Yu Meng said as she poured water for her father to wash his face.
Hearing their conversation, Mom became even happier. She had been worried all day.
The family sat around the dinner table in a warm and cozy atmosphere. Dali beamed with smiles, constantly serving everyone food and sharing anecdotes about her time at the mining company.
Yu's parents were filled with joy as they watched Dali's transformation. Just as they were enjoying their meal, the door was suddenly pushed open, and Haizi burst in. "Oh dear, I'm so glad I made it in time! I'm starving!"
As Hai Zi spoke, he plopped down in a chair. Da Li quickly handed him a steaming hot steamed bun, saying, "Try it, I steamed it especially for you."
Hai Zi took a bite, and her eyes lit up immediately. "Wow, sis, this steamed bun is so delicious!" Everyone couldn't help but laugh as they watched Hai Zi wolf down the bun.
After dinner, the family sat in the courtyard to enjoy the cool air. Dali and Yumeng leaned against each other, whispering softly. The moonlight shone on them, as if draping the ordinary little courtyard in a silver veil, making it warm and beautiful.
"Sister, little sister, Xiao Hui found a job. He says he'll be handling the wild animals they hunt. He pays twenty silver coins a month and has a place to stay." Yu Hai also moved a small stool over and sat down.
"Didn't Xiaohui's mother make a fuss? If he leaves, who will do the housework?" Dali asked curiously.
Xiao Hui promised to give her ten silver coins.
"How are you doing at the martial arts school? Are you supposed to graduate this year?" Dali then asked.
"Yeah, I'll be graduating in two months. Big sister, how about I join your mining group too?" Yu Hai asked, leaning closer to Dali.
"Working for mining companies is very tiring and dangerous. You're a bit young, so they might not be willing to hire you," Dali said frankly.
"But the benefits at Cai Group are good, and they pay a lot."
"Those were earned with your lives. When danger comes, you are always the last to run, unlike me. I am a mask revealer. When I sign the contract, I am required to include a clause that the mask revealer will be given priority protection, but you did not."
"Then what am I supposed to do then? I can't just stay at home doing nothing at this age!" Yu Hai's voice was deflated.
"How about you open a small purchasing shop in town?" Yu Meng suddenly interjected.
"Ah, open a recycling shop? I've never thought about that, and besides, I don't have the money to open a shop. If a little kid like me opened a shop, wouldn't they just rob me?" Yu Hai shook his head, indicating that he couldn't do this job.
"Let's bring Big Brother and Sister Xiu along too, the five of us can go together, how about it?" Yu Meng looked at her eldest sister with bright eyes.
"No." Unexpectedly, the eldest sister and Yu Hai said in unison. Yu Meng looked at them in confusion, "Why not?"
Dali shook her head. "We can't open them together. Otherwise, the bond between us siblings might weaken in the future."
There's a story behind this. Yu Meng pulled her little stool forward; she wanted to hear the story.
Seeing Yu Meng's attitude, Dali helplessly tapped her forehead with her finger.
"The Zhang family in the front yard is a good example. Uncle Zhang and Uncle Zhang jointly opened a small shop, but when the shop grew, they got into a fight over the unequal distribution of profits. One of them said he had to put in more effort, while the other said he had to do just as much physical work. Both sides had their reasons, and in the end, the two families broke up, and the shop closed down completely."
"There are five of us sisters. My eldest brother and I are going to marry into the family, and my sister Xiu is going to be adopted. Just imagine how complicated things are in our family. The accounts will be a complete mess. I don't think it's worth ruining our sisterly harmony for the sake of a shop."
"Hey bro, do you want to do this? If you do, let's open one together." Yu Meng still preferred to open a small shop. Working for a large corporation was too dangerous and too tiring.
"That's fine. If you don't have enough funds, I can lend you some. Our parents should have some money too, consider it a loan." Dali nodded this time.
Yu Meng continued, "You don't need to worry about the shop being robbed. Big Sister's reputation is very high in town. Nobody dares to mess with her."
Dali nodded in agreement. Ever since word got out about the fight between the sisters, no one had dared to dart around in front of her for a while.
"But how can two kids like us open a shop?" Yu Hai still felt that this was unreliable.
"But we still have Dad, right? Why don't you take him with you? That way, he won't have to go out and do such tiring work all the time," Dali suggested.
Yu Hai looked at Yu Meng.
Yu Meng nodded, "That's a good idea. If it works, we can all move to the town."
Dali patted Yu Hai on the shoulder. "Whether our family can stay in town depends entirely on you, little brother."
Yu Hai was stunned. How could such a heavy burden have suddenly been placed on his shoulders? He was still a child. Was this really his older sister?
Yu Hai decided that he would tell his father about it when he graduated. Yu Meng told him that when he had free time, he could go out and look around to see which place would be suitable to open a small shop.
Although Yu Hai was a little worried, he wasn't afraid if it was just him and his little sister.
He didn't know why, but anything involving his younger sister was guaranteed to succeed.
During this time, my older brother also came back a few times to discuss his upcoming marriage with my parents.
One thing that surprised everyone was that he actually wanted to live in town. "Fangting's parents decided to give us that small courtyard house, which has about three rooms, enough for the two of us."
Mom's lips trembled. "You, are you going to become a live-in son-in-law?" Dad also looked disapproving.
Yu Jun quickly waved his hand. "No. We just want to live in town after we get married, so it will be more convenient for us to go to the mining group."
It's true that living in town makes it convenient to visit the mining group. However, the older brother's behavior was inappropriate. No man would move to his wife's family home after marriage; people would look down on him, and his parents would be criticized behind their backs, saying, "He's selling his son."
Finally, Mr. Yu made a decision: "Let's buy a house in town as your new home."
Yu Jun waved his hands repeatedly. "How can that be? How much money would that cost? How would our family survive after that?"
