A Tale of Two Cities Supporting Xinjiang
Chapter 80: A Direct Look at the Chaos
In the leftmost passage, number 3, the employee responsible for opening and inspecting the boxes was moving incredibly fast.
When a passenger handed him a suitcase, he would symbolically open the zipper a crack, glance at it, and immediately zip it up again. He didn't even bother to check the hidden compartments or see what was inside the suitcase.
For soft backpacks, it's even easier; they just give them a couple of quick squeezes and wave the passenger through. The whole process takes less than two seconds—it's practically a lightning-fast check.
Zhai Hongjun stood by for a full five minutes, watching as the employee let more than a dozen passengers through without a single piece of luggage being properly inspected.
He was about to step forward and question them when he was even more shocked by what he saw in the nearby No. 4 passage.
The employee in lane 4, who was staring intently at the scanning screen, appeared to be staring straight at the screen, but Zhai Hongjun could tell from the side that the guy's hand was hidden under the table, rapidly swiping his phone.
Just then, a passenger dragging a carry-on suitcase walked to gate 4 and put the suitcase into the security scanner.
A clear image quickly appeared on the screen: a sharp, folded metal object that stood out prominently.
The employee, who was scrolling through his phone under the table, didn't even lift his eyelids. He casually pressed the release button and pointed in the direction of the luggage, indicating that the passenger could leave.
"stop!"
Zhai Hongjun shouted.
The passenger was startled, paused, and turned around in confusion.
The two security guards were startled by the shout and their faces turned pale instantly.
Zhai Hongjun strode over, pointed at the suitcase in the security scanner, and said coldly, "Take this suitcase out for inspection again!"
The inspector dared not be negligent and quickly took out the box, carefully examining it in front of Zhai Hongjun.
A moment later, he pulled out a folding knife from a hidden compartment in the side pocket of the box.
The blade is 3 centimeters long when unfolded, which fully meets the standards for carrying dangerous goods. If it were actually brought on an airplane, the consequences would be unimaginable.
Zhai Hongjun roared, "I ask you, are you just going through the motions, or are you ensuring safety?"
"The optimized division of labor in the plan is meant to ensure that you each perform your duties meticulously and plug security vulnerabilities! It's not for you to use the division of labor as an excuse to save effort or rush things!"
He pointed at the baggage inspector: "You didn't even check the hidden compartments, what are you inspecting for? You're getting paid but not doing your job, treating passenger safety like a joke?"
He then turned to the employee staring at the screen: "You're even more outrageous! You're using your phone during work hours, and you can't even see the dangerous goods right on the screen. If you miss them and something happens to a passenger, who among you can take responsibility?"
Do you still want your jobs?
The two were so scolded that they trembled and dared not utter a single word.
Hearing the commotion, the security checkpoint supervisor rushed over from the break room. Seeing the fruit knife on the table and Zhai Hongjun's gloomy face, his heart skipped a beat. He quickly stepped forward to smooth things over: "Mr. Zhai, please don't be angry. The passenger flow has indeed been large recently, and the queues are very long. The brothers are just trying to guide the passengers quickly to avoid congestion. We didn't mean anything by it. We were definitely not trying to be perfunctory."
"No other meaning?"
Zhai Hongjun sneered, picked up the fruit knife on the table, weighed it in his hand, and said, "Then let me ask you, if this thing is really brought on a plane and something happens in the air, who will be responsible? You, or me?"
He slammed the fruit knife down on the table and stared into the eyes of the security supervisor: "Does having more customers mean you can trade safety for efficiency? Haven't I told you that before?"
Safety is the bottom line for airports, a red line that cannot be crossed! No matter how busy we are, we cannot treat safety as a mere formality!
These words left the security checkpoint supervisor blushing, standing there stammering, unable to utter a complete sentence for a long time. He could only keep bowing and apologizing: "Mr. Zhai, it's our management that's inadequate. We'll rectify it immediately and strengthen supervision!"
"Rectify it immediately, I'll come back for a follow-up inspection this afternoon."
He then went to check the electronic records of the fire inspection.
I thought that scanning QR codes to fill out forms would eliminate the problem of falsification of handwritten records at its root, but a spot check revealed some irregularities.
He randomly selected a few fire hydrant QR codes and scanned them with his mobile phone to retrieve the inspection records.
One of the fire hydrants, located in the underground parking garage, had a record that read, "Inspected at 9:00 AM, equipment in normal condition, pressure value meets standard."
Zhai Hongjun immediately had someone call over the employee responsible for inspecting this area.
"At 9 a.m., when you were inspecting this place, what was the pressure reading of this fire hydrant? Were there any leaks at the connections? Were there any obstructions around it?"
The employee stammered, "I...I don't remember very clearly. I glanced at it at the time, and everything seemed normal, there was nothing wrong."
"Can't remember?"
Electronic inspections require real-time reporting and detailed status notes. You're telling me you can't remember? Did you not fill it out at the time, or did you not even come?
When pressed by Zhai Hongjun, the employee's legs went weak and he almost couldn't stand. "Mr. Zhai, I'm sorry... I had an emergency at home this morning and didn't have time to come for the inspection. It was... a colleague who helped me with the sweeping and filling out. I really didn't go to the site..."
"Nonsense! Electronic inspections are meant to facilitate supervision, ensure your inspections are carried out effectively, and promptly identify potential hazards, not to make it easier for you to slack off or fabricate data more covertly!"
He pointed to the fire hydrant: "This thing can save lives in critical moments."
"If a fire really breaks out and the problem isn't detected in time, do you know how many people could lose their lives? Can you bear that responsibility?"
Zhai Hongjun immediately pulled out his phone and dialed the number of the head of the logistics department. "Get to the fire escape in the underground parking garage right now, immediately, don't waste a minute!"
"Mr. Zhai, it was our negligence in supervision. I will immediately organize the entire department to investigate and rectify the situation, severely punish this employee, and guarantee that this will never happen again!"
As soon as Zhai Hongjun walked to the vicinity of the side drainage ditch, a fishy and foul smell wafted into his nose, making him instinctively wrinkle his brow.
Zhai Hongjun looked down and saw that the ditch was full of black silt, and piled up with garbage and debris such as rotten branches, plastic bags, and waste paper, almost blocking the ditch completely.
"How long has it been since this drainage ditch was cleaned?"
The operations team leader shrank back in fright, avoiding eye contact with Zhai Hongjun. After hesitating for a long time, he finally lowered his head and murmured, "Mr. Zhai, this... this wasn't included in the routine cleanup process during the operation period."
It was cleaned up once during the preparation period, but it hasn't been maintained since the ship started operating..."
Zhai Hongjun immediately lost his temper, "Nonsense! Just because it wasn't included in the process doesn't mean we're going to ignore it?"
Open your eyes and look at the thickness of this silt pile!
This is not a minor issue; it's a potential threat that could destroy the airport.
The operations team leader was so scolded that he didn't dare to lift his head.
Zhai Hongjun took several deep breaths to barely suppress his anger, then took out his phone and started dialing, his tone icy cold: "Pass the word, an emergency meeting will be held in half an hour."
All those in charge of operations support, security checks, and logistics must be present; not one can be missing!
Anyone who dares to be late, or makes excuses not to come, will face the consequences!
