Chapter 6 How to Settle the Account
Upon hearing that the meal was free and there would be compensation, the guests' complaints immediately subsided, and they quickly packed up and left. Soon, only the policeman, the three Vietnamese brothers, and the panting blond man remained in the hall.
Ye Tian put down the microphone, walked towards Ma Jun, a smile on his face, but the smile didn't reach his eyes: "Officer Ma, it must have been hard work putting on such a big show for me."
Ma Jun wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth and glared at him: "We were on the job! He assaulted a police officer first!"
"I'll cooperate with the ID check," Ye Tian said calmly, yet with an air of authority. "But you police officers got into a fight like this in my establishment, damaged property, and scared away customers. How do you plan to settle this?"
"My nightclub makes at least 300,000 HKD a day. With this commotion tonight, all the customers have left, and business will definitely be affected for the next few days. A rough estimate puts the loss at least at one million. Officer Ma, will you personally pay for this, or will the West Kowloon Police Station pay?"
Ma Jun's expression changed: "You're trying to extort me!"
Ye Tian snapped his fingers. The manager immediately came over with a thick ledger and handed it to Ma Jun.
Ma Jun opened the book suspiciously, but after reading only a few pages, his face turned pale. The accounts were clear, and the turnover was indeed enormous.
Ye Tian took back the ledger, tossed it to the manager, and said coldly, "I spoke with Superintendent Chen on the phone. He'll be here soon. Talk to him about compensation. If we can't reach an agreement, see you in court."
"Now, officers, could you please sit over there for a while? Please don't cause me any more trouble."
Ma Jun gritted his teeth, veins throbbing on his forehead, but dared not resist any longer. He led his men to sit down in a nearby booth, his face extremely grim.
Ye Tian then turned around, put his hands in his pockets, and slowly walked over to the three Vietnamese brothers and the blond-haired man. His gaze swept over them.
"Whose group are you all with?"
A burly man with a fierce look stood up—it was Brother Zha. He grinned, revealing yellow teeth: "Who do we follow? Others have to follow us!"
Ye Tian nodded, even clapping twice: "You've got guts. But on my turf, guts alone aren't enough."
"They wrecked my place and injured my customers (he pointed to the policeman with a bloodied head), they need an explanation."
"Either pay a million dollars, then get out of Mong Kok and never let me see you again."
"Or I'll call the police and sue you for serious property damage and intentional assault. I'll put you in jail for ten or eight years. Think about it carefully."
Brother Zha laughed maniacally, as if he'd heard the funniest joke: "One million? Kid, do you know who we are? How dare you talk to us like that?"
Ye Tian sighed, his tone surprisingly regretful: "Then there's nothing to discuss."
Brother Zha's smile vanished, his eyes turning into those of a hungry wolf: "Back when we were out there in Mong Kok, you were nowhere to be found! Today, I'll teach you a lesson you won't forget!"
Tony, the third brother, suddenly whispered a warning: "Big brother, be careful! Something's off about this kid!"
But it's too late.
Ye Tian's movements were as fast as a shadow. Zha Ge only felt a blur before his eyes, and his hair was grabbed. A huge force pulled his head and slammed it hard against the solid wood table next to him!
"Thump!!"
A muffled thud sounded painful. Without uttering a sound, Brother Zha collapsed, blood gushing from his forehead.
"Big Brother!" Ah Hu roared, pulling a switchblade from his lower back. With a "snap," it sprang open, its cold light flashing as it aimed straight at Ye Tian's chest.
Ye Tian stood still, without moving.
Lin Fu moved. He stepped forward and delivered a precise kick to Ah Hu's wrist. The dagger flew out of his hand. Lin Fu closed in, delivering a swift and ruthless elbow and knee strike, causing Ah Hu to lose his balance.
On the other side, Tony, the second brother, grabbed a bottle and smashed it. Holding the sharp broken edge, he lunged at Ye Tian with bloodshot eyes, fighting with all his might.
Ye Tian simply turned slightly to avoid the dangerous thrust, and at the same time raised his leg and delivered a clean and crisp high side kick, his instep striking Tony squarely near his temple.
Tony's body stiffened, and he fell straight backward, lifeless.
Ah Hu was no match for Lin Fu to begin with, and seeing his two older brothers taken down in an instant threw him into disarray. Lin Fu seized the opening and delivered a heavy swing punch to Ah Hu's jaw. Ah Hu's eyes rolled back, and he collapsed to the ground.
Within seconds, the three Vietnamese brothers, who had been so arrogant just moments before, were all lying on the ground.
The blond-haired boy was terrified, his face drained of color, and he trembled all over. Looking at Ye Tian, he forced a smile that looked more like a grimace: "Brother Tian... I... I was just passing by... It was an accident, purely an accident... You have to believe me..."
Ye Tian didn't even glance at him, turning to Ma Jun instead, his tone returning to its playful smirk:
"Officer Ma, now it's time to settle our score."
"Compensate me double for my losses. Or, let's talk about it in court."
The last trace of color drained from Ma Jun's face, and cold sweat trickled down his cheeks. He opened his mouth, but his throat was too dry to utter a sound.
The door hinges creaked and turned, breaking the still-settling silence of the revelry. Superintendent Chan Yan-kin of the West Kowloon Headquarters strode in with several uniformed officers; their leather shoes clicked rhythmically on the floor. Almost immediately, lawyer Jiang Chengyu entered, accompanied by a middle-aged man in a dark gray suit carrying a briefcase, his face expressionless—this was Yu Zaichun.
Chen Xinjian's gaze swept across the somewhat messy hall like a searchlight, finally settling on Ma Jun. His brows immediately furrowed. He took two steps closer, tilting his head to carefully examine Ma Jun's face, which was swollen to the point of being almost distorted. After a long while, his lips moved, as if he were struggling to suppress the words that were about to come out of his throat. He quickly looked away, replacing his expression with an almost obsequious apology, and hurried towards the booth.
"Mr. Ye," Chen Xinjian began, his voice low and gentle, "I'm really sorry, my subordinates are incompetent and have caused such a big misunderstanding, which has troubled you." He was very careful with his words, downplaying the conflict as a "misunderstanding."
Ye Tian didn't get up, remaining leaning against the soft booth backrest, the cigarette between his fingers already half-burned, a long trail of ash accumulated. He glanced at Chen Xinjian, ignoring the "misunderstanding" topic, and asked directly, "Superintendent Chen, forget the formalities. How do you plan to compensate me for the losses here?"
His voice wasn't loud, it was flat, but every word carried weight. "Tonight's turnover will be at least this much," he gestured with his free hand, "because of your people's disruption, all the customers have been scared away. Business will definitely be affected for the next few days. Roughly speaking, it'll be at least two million."
Chen Xinjian's face tightened slightly.
Ye Tian flicked his cigarette ash, the long streak falling silently into the glass ashtray. "Two options. Either the police station pays the two million, and that's the end of it. Or," he gestured with his chin towards the several bound, still-conscious Vietnamese men on the ground, "these three friends will split the cost. My place can't be vandalized for nothing, and my guests can't be frightened for nothing."
Having said that, he suddenly moved. He stood up unhurriedly, walked to Chen Xinjian's side, and naturally placed his hand on Chen Xinjian's shoulder, which was clad in a woolen uniform with stiff epaulets. Then he turned his head slightly, his lips almost touching Chen Xinjian's ear, his voice so low only they could hear, the breath brushing against his earlobe: "Furthermore, Superintendent Chen, two of your officers set a trap for the Vietnamese in my establishment without even a word to me. Now they haven't caught any fish, the bait has been eaten, and my place is a complete mess. How are you going to settle this score?"
