Who moved her body?
Chapter 14, Plan 1 Failure
Guan Jie put the high-powered telescope he had bought during the day onto the tripod, fixed it, adjusted the focus, and sure enough, he could see the barren rocky island seven kilometers away.
This is a night vision telescope. People who buy this type of telescope usually use it for surveillance and spying. Guan Jie once found this type of telescope in the home of a peeping tom when he was in the police force.
Looking out the window of the room, you can see the junction between the barren rock island and the sea bridge, which is also the only entrance to the island from the mainland.
Guan Jie drew the curtains, thus obscuring the lens of the telescope placed by the window, making it invisible from the outside.
No vehicles came out of the island. Half an hour later, a van painted with vegetables and fruits came into Guan Jie's view. The driver stopped at the entrance, and soon a strong man in security uniform came out of the gatehouse and walked through the glass door. The driver got out of the van and handed something that looked like identification to the security guard. The security guard checked the driver's identification and then got into the driver's seat.
After getting out of the cab, the security guard waved, and the driver opened the truck bed. The security guard shone a flashlight into the truck bed and then went back to the gatehouse.
A short while later, the automatic sliding gate opened, and the van entered through the gate, driving for a while before disappearing behind the undulating scenery.
Although it was a high-powered telescope, it didn't have the ability to see through walls. Faced with the undulating barriers on the island, Guan Jie couldn't see anything inside. Apart from this wide retractable door, everything inside was like Doraemon's Anywhere Door—no one could see a single thing.
No boats approached the island; even the tour boats kept a great distance, no closer than the sea platform. It was as if an invisible barrier separated the island from the outside world, a "keep away, strangers" situation.
Guan Jie rubbed his sore eyes and walked to the bedside to answer the phone.
He bought the phone number from a street vendor; it wasn't registered under his real name.
"Brother, Zeng Meiqian came to confront me today, and I was terrified!" It was Zhuang Buyi calling.
"She has doubts?"
"It's more than just suspicion. The way she looked at me was like she'd caught you cheating. She didn't believe you were away on a business trip and forced me to ask about your whereabouts. I was so scared I almost fainted." Zhuang Buyi's voice still carried a hint of lingering fear, indicating he was truly terrified.
"She didn't make things difficult for you, did she?"
Guan Jie felt a pang of guilt towards Zhuang Buyi. He knew that Zhuang Buyi had never been able to lie since childhood, and now having to face Zeng Meiqian was worse than killing him.
Zhuang Buyi quickly denied it.
"No, no, she's still your fiancée, after all. You should at least give her some face. But to be honest, I really admire her. She acts like she knows everything. I almost thought you'd confessed to her."
"I'm sorry to trouble you. No matter what the outcome, I will tell her in person."
"Hmm. How's it going on your end? Did you see that person who looks like Sister Xiaoxian?"
"Security at 'Diro' is extremely tight, so my first plan has failed."
"I've tried many times in the past two days, but I can't get into 'Diro's' internal website from any side. Their security network is world-class."
Zhuang Buyi took a breath, as if facing an upcoming computer sports competition, "I have never encountered a website with so many protections, even more difficult to breach than the White House Security Agency's website."
Guan Jie knew that Zhuang Buyi, besides having a legitimate job, had joined a mysterious organization called RQ, which was said to be open only to the world's top computer experts. Of course, this wasn't an organization you could simply apply to and pass an interview to join. RQ had no office, and no one knew who its founders and operators were. They would send invitations to those they needed based on the organization's requirements, and only those who received an invitation were considered members.
In short, RQ is an organization that exists entirely in the void, possibly right next to you or thousands of miles away. They regularly assign tasks to their members, and naturally, upon completion, a considerable sum of money will inexplicably appear in the members' accounts.
Guan Jie knew that RQ had done many earth-shattering things, but the hacking into a multinational company's website and tampering with data didn't count, because that was child's play for RQ. They had once used their technology to track down the hideout of the former world's number one terrorist. After shooting him, the US government paid an astronomical sum to a mysterious account. The US Treasury Department questioned the whereabouts of this money, but soon, a US government spokesperson suppressed the matter by citing military spending.
Zhuang Buyi, who was still in junior high school at the time, participated in this tracking, something Guan Jie only guessed many years later. He asked Zhuang Buyi about it, and Zhuang Buyi neither denied nor admitted it.
RQ members' daily routine mainly involves using VPNs to access government websites of various countries—not official government websites. They wouldn't do something like altering news for fame. What they want is challenge and profit: obtaining information from internal government websites that is only known to prime ministers and advisors. Military intelligence is the most valuable, followed by financial intelligence.
Therefore, Zhuang Buyi had an intimate understanding of the difficulty of hacking government websites, as clear as his left tongue and front teeth. When he said that Di Ruo's website was difficult, it really was difficult.
"I'll keep trying, but I don't quite understand why a pharmaceutical company like Diro would invest so much in cybersecurity. Even if someone breaks in and steals their patents, it won't cause them any real loss. At most, it'll just be counterfeit drugs that can't be sold through normal channels." Zhuang Buyi paused and continued, "Unless they have some secret, a secret that absolutely cannot be discovered."
"It seems I need to activate the second plan."
"Be careful, I'll try to investigate Diro from the past. I feel that Diro is definitely not just a simple pharmaceutical company."
"Okay. I'll call you later."
After hanging up the phone, Guan Jie deleted the call log.
It was already dark outside. Guan Jie changed back into the clothes he wore as a tourist, opened the door, and stepped into the elevator.
Guan Jie already knew that the hotel owner, the night watchman who checked in last night, was surnamed Zhang, and people who knew him liked to call him Lao Zhang.
On the table behind the counter were a plate of preserved egg and tofu, a plate of stir-fried celery and shredded pork, and a bowl of tomato and egg soup. Old Zhang was holding a bowl of rice, and at the far end of the table, near the counter, was a phone playing a video. The sound from the video was inaudible, but judging from the background music, Guan Jie could easily guess that Old Zhang was watching Douyin (TikTok).
TikTok is addictive; almost no one is immune. Guan Jie smiled.
While picking up some food, Old Zhang glanced at Guan Jie, who had just come out of the elevator. He put down his bowl, raised his hand, and greeted him, "Have you eaten?"
"Let's go out for a bite to eat and play around for a while. I slept too long this afternoon."
"Yeah, it's so hot during the day, I really don't understand what those tourists from the inland are thinking." Old Zhang picked up a piece of preserved egg and stuffed it into his mouth, chewing and pouting, looking completely bewildered. "Normally, I'm afraid of getting a tan when I go out, but I'm not afraid at all when I get to the beach. They all brave the blazing sun on the sand and call it 'sunbathing'."
After finishing his food, Old Zhang clicked his tongue twice, seemingly mocking those hypocritical girls from the bottom of his heart.
Guan Jie walked to the counter, took out a cigarette, lit it, and then tossed one to Lao Zhang. Lao Zhang took it, put it on the table, squinted, and nodded, "This cigarette is good."
