Who moved her body?

Chapter 11 Target Discovery

The waiter chuckled, and Wei Yuan's face lifted slightly.

"This is Diro's headquarters, not a production base. This is where they do the most advanced research and inventions; there's no way they'd ship a lot of stuff out," the waiter said, watching the van disappear into the distance.

"Oh, I see. You know quite a lot," Guan Jie said flatteringly.

"Hehe, I've been here for years and I've never seen any large trucks. That small truck, on the other hand, comes and goes every day. So, that's my guess."

"Impressive," Guan Jie nodded approvingly. "But it must be so inconvenient for the people at Diruo headquarters to commute to get off work; they have to drive such a long way every day."

"They rarely come down, I heard from a friend at the hotel," the waiter continued, pointing to the viewing platform in the distance. "People on the island can't just come down anywhere. It's said that everyone up there is an important person, probably to avoid leaking research and development secrets. Who knows?"

The waiter shrugged, curled his lip, then picked up his tray and turned to leave.

This was the first time Guan Jie had eaten breakfast so slowly and deliberately, and it took him more than an hour to finish.

During this time, no cars with the "Diro" logo crossed the bridge; only cars kept coming onto it. Apart from tour buses, most of the cars were mid-to-low-end brand cars under 300,000 yuan, with standard models and common colors—the kind of car that a family could use for various purposes.

People who own luxury cars of all styles and colors wouldn't go up at this time, because the hotel rooms haven't been cleaned yet.

People who are not short of money don't care about the scenery at sea. Instead, they use the excuse of sightseeing to take a naive young woman to a hotel. They just want to get to the room as soon as possible and don't care how much the woman wants to see the sea view.

Among the cars coming off the island wasn't that red sports car with its incredibly sleek, cheetah-like lines. If it were, Guan Jie certainly wouldn't have missed it.

After finishing his meal, Guan Jie went outside. This was the middle of the white sand beach, and there was a sunshade under the bridge. So as Guan Jie pushed open the restaurant door, the heat and noise rushed in like waves. Guan Jie subconsciously pulled down the brim of his baseball cap.

The approach bridge is flanked by two rows of small shops, behind which are two large open-air parking lots. If you're not staying at a hotel and are just playing on the beach, then this parking lot is a must-visit, except for those walking or taking public transportation.

The shops range in size from a dozen square meters to three or four square meters, one after another, stretching all the way to the end of the parking lot. The three-meter ceiling height is enough to let in the salty wind from the sea, and the seashell wind chimes inside chime merrily, never stopping.

The rooftops, like the beach, were white, reflecting a dazzling white light under the sun. The air above the rooftops was distorted and deformed, making distant objects appear ethereal, like mirages at sea.

These aren't concrete or brick structures; they're steel buildings, much like the shipping containers workers live in on construction sites, except they have foundations. These buildings seem to be demonstrating to all visitors that the landowners have the ability to raze these structures to the ground in a second.

Each shop door has a tall, rolling shutter that occasionally makes a clanging sound, but it can't drown out the tinkling of countless seashell wind chimes.

Guan Jie went around behind the shops, through the parking lot, and walked all the way to the end of the shops, which was also the end of the parking lot. Here, the approach bridge to the sea bridge ends, and a turn merges into a city expressway.

Walking back about a hundred meters, a culvert connects the parking lots on both sides of the approach bridge. Guan Jie lit a cigarette outside the culvert and stood at the smoking spot, looking at the shops he had just passed. At that moment, the sounds of bargaining drowned out the sound of wind chimes. A women's swimsuit priced at 150 yuan was finally sold for 38 yuan. The shopkeeper, putting the swimsuit into his bag, kept saying he had lost money, while the woman taking out her money kept saying that the swimsuit could definitely be cheaper. Judging from her hesitant look as she took out her money, she must have regretted not bargaining for 25 yuan.

Among the tourists, the most numerous were long-legged girls with swimming rings and sunglasses, and middle-aged men with big bellies who seemed to have swimming rings of their own. Apart from them, there were families with children who did not communicate at all along the way.

This is life, this is reality.

Guan Jie remembers someone once saying, "If you want to see beautiful women, go to the beach. It's the only place where you can see scantily clad beauties for free. If you want to know what love is, go to the beach and see the reality that those beautiful women would rather be with greasy old men than with young men their own age."

Guan Jie took the cigarette he had been holding in his mouth for a while, and the ash, as long as the filter, suddenly broke off and drifted away in the wind. Guan Jie flattened the cigarette butt at the extinguishing spot and followed a group of tourists wearing the same hats to the other side of the culvert.

Passing through the culvert, on the other side is a row of shops with the same structure, selling almost identical items.

Behind the shops was a parking lot of the same size, already mostly full. The cars were predominantly black and white, with only a few dark red ones, as if someone had deliberately selected them. The tourists getting out of the cars were almost all the same type of person—flat-chested and protruding-bellied, having long since given up on maintaining their figures. They all wore the same expression on their faces: eager yet weary.

At 10:20, Guan Jie leaned against the base of a sculpture opposite the shop. It was one of a series of cartoon animal sculptures, and the one behind Guan Jie was Snow White. The black-haired princess in a blue princess dress stood on a half-meter-high base, and the fluffy princess dress provided Guan Jie with a shady spot.

At this time, the tourists are busy playing in the water, and there won't be any cute little girls competing with him for Snow White's spot.

The shops across the street are doing good business, especially the shop selling sun hats.

The crudely made wide-brimmed sun hats were given a noble price by the scorching sun. Exaggerated green, bright red, thick black, and pale white... were paired with a colorful ribbon wrapped around the bottom of the hatband, with a half-foot-long ribbon hanging down.

This is a unique scene by the sea.

Guan Jie could imagine that the ladies wearing hats that almost covered their shoulders would throw their portable parasols aside as soon as they stepped onto the beach, and wouldn't even want to look at them again.

Swimsuits and swimming rings are the next best business, with shops selling trendy swimming rings packed with customers.

Guan Jie wasn't sure if those things, bigger than a person, unicorn-shaped, and like inflatable beds, could really be called swim rings, but young women were scrambling to buy them, as if not being fashionable without one. The man inflating the unicorns was busy, looking bewildered, seemingly puzzled by the customers' preferences.

The souvenir and jewelry shops were doing very little business. Guan Jie knew this was only temporary.

Some people like to buy souvenirs when they travel, and they never give up this habit, just like they are determined to take photos and post them on social media wherever they go.

Later in the afternoon, the jewelry store will get busy, and the little birds made of three seashells will become bestsellers. Parents can use them to soothe noisy children.

There are also shops selling drinks, but only drinks and water. Food is prohibited here. You can eat at the restaurants not far away; there are all kinds of restaurants in the commercial street.

A long row of shops sells only items related to the seaside. There are beverage shops, jewelry shops, pearl jewelry shops, sun hat shops, swimwear and swim ring shops, and then it's a cycle again, with prices all about the same. It seems the managers have thought of everything for the tourists, so that you can buy whatever you need anytime, anywhere.

Outside each shop, there was a middle-aged woman soliciting business, enthusiastically introducing her products to passing tourists as if no one else was paying attention.

When Guan Jie saw a deserted shop, his eyes lit up, and he pulled his baseball cap down low and walked toward the bookstore.
