The Australian Revolution of 1828

Chapter 56: The British Have Arrived

At 8 PM on August 25, 1828, at the port of Hanyang Prefecture in the Xia Kingdom.

After the urging in the last post, the labor union finally got a result.

With the fighting on Zhaoyang Island temporarily subsided and there was no possibility of further escalation, Li Guochen sent more than 3.1 male laborers to Hanyang in batches.

This group of laborers was divided into five batches, each with about 6000 people. After arriving at Hanyang Port, they would rest for a day or two before being sent to various mines to replace the Chinese miners.

Of the 3.1 workers, 2.5 are young and strong, with inexhaustible energy. The other group, consisting of the elderly and children, does what they can to help with tasks.

Of course, salaries still need to be paid to keep the money circulating.

The influx of 3.1 workers into the mines will free up at least 2.5 Chinese miners to work in other industries and professions, including important sectors such as shipyards, arsenals, ironworks, gold mines, cement plants, and copper plants.

Some Chinese miners also joined the security forces, learning line firing tactics and artillery handling techniques in order to prepare for potential future wars.

"Your Majesty, the first group of female immigrants from Xunyang County will arrive at the port in half an hour. Please give your instructions."

Indeed, after the male laborers were sent to Hanyang, the female immigrants, who were next in line, were also put into the process. These female immigrants were all from Xunyang, numbering about 3.

The first batch of female immigrants numbered over 7000, all of whom were of childbearing age. They would form families with the Chinese community in Hanyang and contribute to the development of Hanyang together.

As for the subsequent batches, arrangements will be made as soon as possible to ensure that the remaining 2.3 women are immigrated to Hanyang within one month.

Those who are of childbearing age will form families, while younger children will be arranged to learn knitting techniques to prepare the necessary talent for garment factories.

The other group of elderly people were assigned to farms and ranches to be responsible for land reclamation, farming, raising cattle and sheep, etc.

The whole arrangement, apart from lacking human touch, is basically flawless from the perspective of capital and industry. Everyone has found their place and gotten what they deserve.

Han Qingyun had come from the palace to oversee the work of the Ministry of Immigration and Trade. Standing on a high point in the harbor, looking at the ships faintly visible in the distance, he said, "Let's wait here then!"

"This time, more than 7000 people immigrated in total. I don't know how many of them couldn't hold on and fell ill on the ship."

"Get the port hospital up and running! Immigrants with health problems need timely treatment; we can't let an epidemic break out!"

Generally speaking, the mortality rate on the route from the Qing Dynasty to Hanyang was around 9%, which was already quite good.

Of course, the mortality rate here includes cases of people who are physically weak and cannot withstand the turbulence on the ship, as well as cases of people who are genuinely sick, all of which are attributed to death from illness.

The route from Xunyang Island to Hanyang only stops at the port of Laiyang County (Pidamara) for rest, with few stops along the way, and the mortality rate has remained below 2% for most of the journeys.

If you are in better health, the mortality rate will be even lower.

However, for these immigrants, they certainly wouldn't eat well before boarding the ship, nor would they have a strong body, and the mortality rate became an unavoidable hurdle.

The reason for bringing this up now is clearly not for the sake of these women, but rather out of concern that if there are too many people, it could easily lead to an epidemic.

Luo Bingzhong, who had been following Han Qingyun, understood the meaning behind the words and said, "Your Majesty, I will immediately order people to spread some lime powder at the port to prevent the spread of disease."

"From now on, sprinkle some in the hold every time you immigrate!"

Having immigrated for so many years, it seems there haven't been any major epidemics, and we've remained safe and sound.

Han Qingyun understood, however, that the epidemic came and went without warning, making it virtually impossible to prevent. Only by taking it seriously could the impact of the epidemic be avoided, especially since immigration efforts would be intensified later on.

About half an hour later, 15 immigrant ships docked at the port, and many young women emerged from the cabins, dressed differently from the women of Hanyang.

Standing on the high platform, Han Qingyun had a clear view. Pointing at the frail women whose bodies were ravaged, he said, "The ship is rocking. Let them wash up, change into clean clothes, and rest for a few days!"

"Once they are fully recovered, we will arrange for them to start their own families as soon as possible."

Only when a small family is formed and people have enough to eat can their hearts be considered truly at peace!

As for the change of clothes that have been prepared in advance, they can be included in the marriage agency fee, which will be paid by the Chinese man.

More than 20000 women of childbearing age will form at least 10000 families, solving the problem of more than 10000 Chinese men who are unmarried and childless.

This involves the issue of one man marrying multiple wives, but Han Qingyun doesn't stop it and lets it develop as it may. The main point is that whoever pays the intermediary fee marries the principal wife or concubine.

This move not only had an extremely positive effect, but also motivated Chinese men to work hard, giving them something to look forward to.

Otherwise, if everyone is lazy and doesn't work hard, how can they possibly earn money and get married?

Seeing the woman from Xunyang move into the port's dormitory, Han Qingyun rushed to the port's bank.

The Xia Kingdom has only three banks: a head office located in Hanyang City, a branch office located in the port, and a branch office located in Xunyang County.

The Xunyang County branch has just been established and does not handle lending business yet. Its main function is to issue Xia State silver dollars and copper coins through remittance.

The Hanyang Port Branch was different. It was established to facilitate loans for immigrants and did not have the functions of issuing silver dollars or exchanging currency.

Such strict regulation of banks is because the financial system cannot be allowed to become chaotic.

At present, Hanyang Bank is still in the early stages of development and lacks the ability to cope with complex situations. It can only ensure financial stability through functional constraints.

Only with financial stability can the Xia Kingdom achieve stability and grow stronger.

After all, for the Xia Kingdom to develop, it needs to generate more money, relying on the deposit and loan functions of banks. As for the bank's issuance function, that requires gold and silver mines to sustain it.

Mingzhou has this gold and silver mine, but the Xia Kingdom does not yet fully control it, nor does it have the capacity to fully mine it. Everything depends on the Xia Kingdom completely occupying all of Mingzhou and gaining recognition from European countries led by Britain before large-scale development can begin.

Before this, it could only be developed and used on a small scale.

After spending some time at the bank, just as they were preparing to return, the police station in charge of port security came to report, saying, "Your Majesty, a British naval warship has been spotted!"

Although preparations for war were underway, Han Qingyun still felt a bit flustered when he heard that the British were coming.

This global maritime empire put immense pressure on Han Qingyun.

这时候的英国刚经历了第一次英缅战争(1824年3月5日—1826年2月24日),损失不可谓不大。

The battle resulted in the deaths of over 15000 British soldiers and cost a staggering £1300 million. The exorbitant expenses led to a severe economic crisis in British India in 1833, and Governor-General Amherst narrowly escaped being replaced.

With a war expenditure of £1300 million, 260 third-class battleships could be purchased at £5 each, and 162 second-class battleships at £8 each.

According to the current currency system in Hanyang, it could be exchanged for 4500 million silver dollars.
