Chapter 53 Demonstration
As soon as Victor finished speaking, Professor Flitwick eagerly took a step forward.
His voice, amplified by magic, shone even higher with excitement, echoing throughout the hall.
"Fantastic! An unparalleled start! The rules are clear, the objective is well-defined!"
He waved his short arms, his eyes like two bright stars.
"Now that the theoretical knowledge is covered, it's time for a little—oh, just a little—practical observation!"
He turned to the audience, his eyes searching the crowd with the enthusiasm of an eager mentor.
"To give everyone a more intuitive understanding of what a basic duel under safe rules looks like, I will invite a few students to the stage to demonstrate a mini-duel under my personal guidance!"
The young wizards immediately stirred again, both excited and nervous. Many of them subconsciously shrank their necks, hoping not to be called on, yet secretly looking forward to it.
"First, let's have a classic one-on-one duel demonstration!" He pointed to the Gryffindor wizards sitting there.
"Miss Harley Potter!" Turning to Slytherin, "Mr. Draco Malfoy! Both of you are Seekers of the school, which gives you a slight advantage in the duel. Please come up to the stage!"
Harley took a deep breath and stood up under Hermione's whispered encouragement and Ron's tense gaze.
Malfoy leisurely straightened his neatly pressed robe, raised his chin, and walked toward the ring with his signature arrogant expression.
The two stood in the center of the ring, facing each other a few steps apart, as if tiny sparks of electricity were crackling in the air.
Snape's gaze, like a cold probe, swept over Malfoy before fixing firmly on Harry.
"Very good! Come here, children, let me explain the most basic rules and the most commonly used spells to you."
As he spoke, Professor Flitwick came to stand among them.
With an excited tone, he quickly explained the basic etiquette for resolving fights to the two young wizards.
He also demonstrated and taught the two how to quickly learn the starting stance for the Disarming Charm.
"Remember, this is a demonstration; the focus is on showing the procedure, etiquette, and the use of basic spells. Now, dueling etiquette!"
After a short while, once he was certain that both young wizards had grasped the trick he had described,
Flitwick nodded in satisfaction and gestured for the two to come to either side of the dueling ring.
The two faced each other and bowed stiffly to one another.
"Raise your wands! Heed my command, we'll begin with the most basic Disarming Charm! Ready—three, two, one, go!"
"Expelliarmus!" Harley Quinn struck first, a beam of red light shooting from the tip of her wand straight at Malfoy.
Malfoy nimbly glided to the side, a flash of red light grazing his robe sleeve.
He immediately retorted: "Disarm you!"
However, the light from his spell was noticeably dimmer than Harley's, and it was slower, almost disappearing halfway through its flight.
"Beautiful start and dodge, Miss Potter! Mr. Malfoy, don't be nervous, concentrate your magic!" Professor Flitwick shouted from the side.
Malfoy's face darkened instantly, clearly feeling ashamed and annoyed by the weakness of his spell.
He immediately changed his strategy and stopped insisting on the disarming spell.
"Grin and whoosh!" He waved his wand, and a beam of silver light shot towards Harley.
Harley was caught off guard and quickly jumped aside, the spell striking the ground at her feet.
The tension and the sudden change made her forget half of the key points of pacing that Professor Frivi had just emphasized, and her steps became somewhat unsteady.
"Oh! A change! Mr. Malfoy has used a minor curse! It's within permissible limits, but be careful to control it!"
Professor Flitwick continued his explanation, trying to steer the pace, "Miss Potter, keep moving, don't stop!"
But clearly, the pressure of their first official duel in front of everyone began to affect the two of them.
Seeing Harley's steps falter, Malfoy felt smug and immediately cast another spell: "Tarantella Dance!"
A streak of purplish-red light shot out.
Harley, trying to regain her footing, saw this and frantically waved her wand, almost instinctively shouting the spell that felt most natural at the moment: "Expelliarmus!"
A more solid red light burst forth from the tip of her wand, striking Malfoy's wand precisely before it could strike.
Malfoy's wand flew out of his hand, spinning as it landed on the edge of the ring.
Almost at the same instant, Malfoy's Dancing Charm also struck Harley.
"Oh!" Harley cried out in surprise, feeling her legs start kicking and spinning uncontrollably, causing her to lose her balance and fall.
"Wands flying back!" Professor Flitwick reacted swiftly. Amid the exclamations of the young wizards, he waved his wand, and Malfoy's wand flew back into his hand.
At the same time, he pointed at Harley with his other hand: "Stop the curse immediately!"
Harley's leg movements came to an abrupt halt. She staggered before regaining her balance, her face flushed and panting heavily.
Malfoy caught the returning wand, his face paler than usual, his lips pressed tightly together.
After a moment of silence following this unexpected outcome, the crowd erupted in cheers.
Although their duel wasn't as flashy and exciting as the professors', it was still enough for the young wizards.
Professor Flitwick walked between the two, his face still flushed with excitement. He clapped his hands and spoke clearly.
"Although the process was somewhat... well, unexpected, and the pacing a bit chaotic, I must say, Miss Potter and Mr. Malfoy gave us a very realistic, very typical beginner's duel!"
He turned to Harley: "Miss Potter, in a tense and unexpected situation, still managed to cast the Disarming Charm successfully and hit her target using instinct and quick reflexes. That's truly remarkable! Especially considering the interference from other spells!"
Then he looked at Malfoy: "Mr. Malfoy is adaptable, quickly trying other methods when one strategy doesn't work, which demonstrates tactical thinking! Of course, there's still much room for improvement in control and precision, both of you!"
He patted the shoulders of the two still somewhat bewildered children.
"Remember how you felt tonight, remember how the tension affected your steps and spell control. That's the purpose of the Duel Club—to experience, make mistakes, learn, and grow in a safe environment! Thank you both for your courageous demonstration!"
Applause erupted from the audience, less enthusiastic than before, but more understanding and well-intentioned encouragement.
Harley and Malfoy each bowed and then stepped off the ring.
Harry returned to the Gryffindor table, and Ron and Hermione immediately surrounded her.
"You knocked his wand away! That last one was amazing!" Ron said excitedly, even though Harley's dancing appearance was indeed a bit funny.
"You seem like you'd be perfect for the Disarming Charm," Hermione analyzed seriously, "but your steps are completely off. If Malfoy's Dancing Charm had been a little faster, or if you hadn't cast the Disarming Charm in time..."
Harley nodded, her heart still pounding, but a strange sense of accomplishment mixed with embarrassment welled up inside her.
This feeling was like the first time she touched a flying broom, or the first time she brewed that perfect pot of scabies medicine.
This is genuine excitement and joy!
She looked up at the ring; Professor Flitwick was already calling for the next group of demonstrators.
"Next, let's see the allure of a two-person duel! It requires tacit understanding, teamwork, and tactical planning!"
Professor Frivi's high-pitched voice was full of energy.
"Now, please come up to the stage, Weasley brothers—Fred and George! And Patil sisters—Parvati and Padma!"
The twins cheered, as if they had been waiting for this moment.
They cheered, set off two small fireworks, clapped their hands, and jumped onto the stage, eliciting laughter and applause.
The Petit sisters, on the other hand, appeared much more reserved. They walked onto the stage hand in hand, but they exchanged a glance, seemingly eager to try as well.
"Remember, the key to a two-person duel is communication and teamwork! One person can take the lead while the other provides cover, or both can apply pressure from different angles simultaneously! Now, form groups and stand in line, etiquette!"
The four people split into two groups and bowed to each other.
The twins' exaggerated yet synchronized movements made everyone laugh.
The Petit sisters bowed gracefully and in unison.
"start!"
The twins had clearly planned this all along.
Fred lunged forward almost the instant he uttered the word "begin," his wand pointed directly at Padma: "Expelliarmus!"
George, meanwhile, moved to the flank, his wand circling, a less solid barrier spell attempting to disrupt Parvati's vision and casting angle.
"Oh! A classic feint attack!" Professor Flitwick exclaimed.
The Petit sisters seemed taken aback by the twins' sudden aggressive style of play, but they reacted quickly.
Parvati ignored George's interference spell, and instead quickly stepped forward to stand in front of her sister, waving her wand.
A stone slab conjured by a transformation spell appeared in front, blocking the sudden curse.
Meanwhile, under her sister's protection, Padma calmly aimed at the moving George: "Petrify them all!"
A grayish-white light shot out from the tip of her staff, heading straight for George.
George let out a yelp and fell to the side in an extremely awkward position, the spell grazing his ear and striking the protective shield at the edge of the ring.
"A beautiful defensive counter-attack! The Petit sisters' teamwork was perfectly timed!" Professor Flitwick exclaimed excitedly.
"The Weasley brothers' tactical intentions were good, but the execution could have been more precise!"
The ring instantly became lively. The twins, with their amazing teamwork and unpredictable movements, kept trying to disrupt the Petit sisters' rhythm.
The two sisters, on the other hand, played a steady and methodical approach. Parvati focused on defense, constantly casting Polymorph and Barrier spells to create a safe environment for her sister to cast spells.
Padma was responsible for precise counterattacks, unleashing a barrage of disarming and binding spells that forced the twins to dodge frequently.
"See that? That's the meaning of partnership!" Professor Flitwick's voice almost reached its limit. "Complementing each other, supporting each other! The balance between offense and defense!"
Finally, when Professor Flitwick called a halt, both were slightly out of breath, but both wore excited smiles.
Although there was no clear winner or loser, the whole process was full of tactical sparks and a joyful atmosphere.
The twins' comical yet effective coordinated movements captivated the young wizards in the audience, sparking their interest in duels.
"That was fantastic! Thank you all for demonstrating! You showed the power of trust and collaboration, and—Mr. Weasleys—some very creative ways of moving around!"
Professor Flitwick smiled and gestured for them to step down from the stage.
The twins walked down arm in arm, still arguing about which coordinated move was more effective.
The Petit sisters blushed, but their eyes sparkled as they accepted their classmates' congratulations.
Professor Flitwick turned to the audience, his cheeks flushed with excitement.
"Individual prowess and perfect teamwork! And this is just the beginning! Imagine the complexity and grandeur of a five-person team! Of course, that requires much more training and practice. I hope today's small demonstration will ignite everyone's passion for different forms of dueling!"
He looked at Victor and Snape, seemingly seeking a final conclusion.
Victor smiled and nodded, while Snape remained expressionless in the shadows, like a cold statue.
"Then I declare," Professor Flitwick announced loudly, his voice trembling with excitement.
"Tonight's opening ceremony of the Hogwarts Duel Club has come to a successful conclusion! Thank you again to Professor Scamander and Professor Snape for their exceptional demonstration, and thank you to all the students who participated! Remember the rules, practice diligently, and we'll see you in the dueling ring!"
A third round of even more enthusiastic and prolonged applause resounded throughout the auditorium.
This time, there was boundless anticipation and excitement for the upcoming new activities.
The young wizards began to leave in an orderly fashion, their excited chatter almost lifting the ceiling.
They discussed the professors' incredible offensive and defensive techniques.
They were arguing about whether Harley or Malfoy had the upper hand.
They mimic the twins' quirky movements, or seriously discuss with their friends the possibility of teaming up for a duel.
