Chapter 70 Should we try the "evidence"?

"fine."

Shen Fei led Su Man directly through the crowd to the very front of the dock.

Three uniformed guards disembarked from the patrol boat.

The leader was a man in his forties with a captain's badge on his shoulder, a serious expression, and sharp eyes.

The man walked up to Shen Fei and gave him a very standard salute.

"Mr. Shen Fei? This is Captain Evans of the Canadian Coast Guard. We have received a formal report and need to conduct a surprise inspection of your fishing facilities."

The team member behind him opened a tablet computer, which displayed a search warrant stamped with an official seal.

"report?"

Shen Fei glanced at the document and asked calmly, "Who reported us? What did they report us for?"

"The whistleblower's information needs to be kept confidential, sir."

Captain Evans spoke politely but firmly, "The complaint alleges that your fish farm is illegally using and discharging prohibited growth hormones. Under the Marine Conservation Act, we need to immediately inspect your aquaculture areas, feed storage facilities, and water recycling system."

Zhang Xin grew anxious and stepped forward, shouting:

"That's impossible! We test our feed and water quality daily, and all our standards far exceed industry regulations!"

Captain Evans glanced at him, but his gaze remained fixed on Shen Fei.

"Our technicians will make a professional assessment. Sir, please cooperate."

Shen Fei stopped Zhang Xin, who wanted to argue, and nodded at the captain.

"Can."

This straightforward answer surprised everyone, including Captain Evans.

Shen Fei made a "please" gesture.

"My breeding experts and security supervisor will take you wherever you want to go. You can look around and take samples as you please."

Captain Evans exchanged a glance with his two men, then nodded.

Okay. Let's begin now.

Accompanied by Zhang Xin and Kyle, the two technicians entered the core breeding area.

They worked professionally, using sealed sampling bottles to collect water samples from the abalone farming ponds, scallop nursery areas, and several main circulating water outlets.

Pete paced anxiously back and forth beside him.

Suddenly, a technician's portable testing device beeped, and his expression changed.

"Captain," he straightened up and looked at Evans, "preliminary screening shows that the synthetic hormone readings in water sample number three are abnormal, with a positive result for G-class hormones."

The moment the words left his mouth, the surroundings fell silent.

Pete's face turned pale.

"Nonsense! We've never even heard of G-type hormones!"

Captain Evans' expression turned serious, and his sharp gaze pierced Shen Fei.

"Mr. Shen, what explanation do you have for this?"

Shen Fei, however, showed no sign of panic; instead, he smiled.

He strolled over slowly and glanced at the reading on the instrument.

"G-type hormones?"

He repeated it softly, then looked up at Captain Evans, "Captain, was the informant who provided you with the information from Poseidon Industries?"

Captain Evans' eyes narrowed.

"This is classified information."

He said that, but the change in his eyes said it all.

Shen Fei ignored him and continued speaking to himself:

"I guess your whistleblower not only mentioned G-class hormones, but also 'thoughtfully' told you that its metabolites have a unique chemical fingerprint, right?"

"But unfortunately, there is a type of Irish seaweed cultivated in our fish farm that, under specific light and temperature conditions, produces a similar natural alkaloid that enhances the immunity of seedlings. This is our patented technology."

He pointed to the instrument in the technician's hand.

"The spectral resolution of your portable device is too low to distinguish between synthetic hormones and our natural alkaloids. Any professional laboratory mass spectrometer can easily separate their spectral peaks."

"Captain, your informant is either pretending to know what he doesn't, or... deliberately only telling you half the truth in order to use you to get back at me."

After speaking, Shen Fei turned to look at Captain Evans, the smile on his face vanished, and his eyes became equally sharp.

"Captain, let's make a deal."

"My helicopter is in the hangar, ready to take off at any time. We'll send these water samples, along with one of your officials, to Toronto's most reputable third-party testing facility. With expedited processing, results will be available in six hours."

"If even a single microgram of prohibited substances is detected, I will immediately shut down the fish farm, hand over all assets to the state, and personally go back with you to accept the investigation."

"However," Shen Fei changed the subject, "if the water sample is clean, I demand that the Coast Guard issue a public apology to my fishing grounds in an official capacity, clarify the facts, and provide me with the name of the whistleblower who provided the false information."

"So, Captain, are you up for the bet?"

The entire dock was completely silent.

Captain Evans stared intently at Shen Fei.

He had never seen anyone like this before; it was simply insane.

Just as Evans hesitated, Shen Fei turned around as if nothing had happened and called out to James, the butler, who was not far away.

"James."

"Sir, I'm here."

"Our guests have come from afar and have worked hard, so we cannot neglect them."

Shen Fei's tone became more relaxed. "Bring the barbecue grill to the beach and bring out our best lobsters, snow crabs, and freshly caught tuna. Also, open a few cases of beer."

"Let our guests taste what truly clean seafood looks like."

"Yes, sir."

James bowed and turned to make the arrangements.

Pete and Zhang Xin, who were just tense, instantly understood what the boss meant. They looked at each other, became excited, rolled up their sleeves, and ran to help.

A few minutes later, the atmosphere at the inspection site completely changed.

Several large barbecue grills were pushed onto the beach by the pier, and the estate's chef began skillfully preparing the ingredients.

Boxes of giant lobsters, still bubbling, were brought out.

Plates of fresh scallops, each the size of a palm, were pried open and arranged.

There was also a bluefin tuna belly that had just been taken out of the cold storage, its pink flesh covered with snowflake-like fat.

The Coast Guard members were stunned, watching helplessly as this group turned the enforcement site into an open-air seafood barbecue party.

The aroma of charcoal and seafood filled the air.

Shen Fei took off his coat, stood in front of an oven, picked up a lobster with its back split open, and brushed it with melted garlic butter.

With a sizzle, the aroma burst forth.

He picked up a piece of grilled lobster meat and held it to Su Man's lips.

"Try it."

Su Man smiled, opened her mouth, and narrowed her eyes.

At this moment, the baby seal "Miracle" from the recovery pool swam over, poked its head out of the water, stared intently at the grill with its dark eyes, and made a gurgling sound in its throat.

Shen Fei laughed and cut off a small piece of unseasoned grilled cod, then tossed it over.

"Miracle" caught it in one gulp and spun it around in the water.

After doing all that, Shen Fei carried a plate of grilled abalone sprinkled with rock salt and black pepper to Captain Evans, whose face was ashen.

He held up the plate and asked with a smile.

"Captain, would you like to taste a piece of the evidence?"
