US police: outlaws
Chapter 41: The Internship Graduation Exam
The next morning at 9 a.m., Li Yisen ended his paid leave early and returned to the police station, since missing a shift would result in a significant loss of his Level 1 bonus.
"Hey, the police department's rising star is back."
Good morning.
"The director praised you at the meeting yesterday; I'm so envious!"
"Haha, a bit of luck."
As Li Yisen drove from his car to the director's office, he encountered familiar colleagues who greeted him warmly.
If the drug smuggling case in the mountains allowed him to disregard time and seniority and secure his position among the patrol officers, making all the patrol officers no longer see him as a newcomer, but as a colleague of the same rank.
His success in solving the human trafficking case made him a rising star in the eyes of the entire police department. Even the criminal investigation team and the internal affairs department treated him with more respect, since even the chief praised him.
Suddenly, a still-attractive policewoman called out to Lee Ethan. If he remembered correctly, she was Nina Kent, a second-level police officer from the patrol team, and she was close to 40 years old.
"Hey Ethan, are you free tonight? Want to grab a drink?"
Li Yisen was stunned. They had only met a few times and hadn't even exchanged many words. How could they have been having a drink together that night?
"I have plans for tonight?"
"Really? Is she a woman?"
"..."
Although the policewoman was shorter than him, Li Yisen always felt like she wanted to devour him; her eyes seemed to be asking him to go hunting for women.
Nina drew circles on the other person's chest with her hand.
"You're not lying to me, are you? Are you afraid of me? I just want to hear your description of how you solved the case. Maybe I'll have a few more drinks, is that not allowed, Ethan?"
Just as Li Yisen was considering how to get rid of the other party, Kaia, dressed in a suit, appeared.
"Nina, I'm sorry, Ethan has an appointment with me today."
Nina glanced at the two of them, then shook her head and smiled.
"Since I have a date with a beautiful lady, I won't disturb you."
After the policewoman left, Kaiya explained.
"Nina's husband died, and she's looking for a new husband to raise five children. If you're interested in becoming the stepfather of her five children, go on a date with her. The eldest child is four years younger than you."
Thanks.
"You're welcome, you owe me a meal."
During work hours, Kaiya didn't talk much. Instead, Li Yisen could see a competitive spirit in her eyes. It seemed that Kaiya wanted to catch up with or even surpass him in solving cases.
"A competitive and cunning woman."
There was a knock on the director's door.
"Come in."
"Chief, Constable Ethan reporting for duty."
"Please sit down."
The old man and the young man looked at each other, and Jason Garcia smiled.
"The district police contacted me yesterday. They did a great job on the case. I talked to the chief about your name, since you really did an excellent job in the case."
"Thank you so much."
All Li Yisen could do was express his gratitude, as it was entirely beneficial for those above to hear his name.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is divided into seven precincts.
The Patrol Division, Criminal Investigation Division, Special Enforcement Division, Prison Division, Court Services Division, Personnel and Training Division, and Technical and Support Division are all headed by Assistant Sheriffs (third-in-commands). Above them are the Deputy Sheriffs (second-in-commands) and the Chief Sheriff.
The patrol precinct has eight regional police stations under its jurisdiction, each responsible for the area under the county police's jurisdiction. The regional police chief is a Level 1 police superintendent, and the local police chiefs under the regional police chiefs are Level 2 or Level 3.
Jason Garcia is a Level 3 police superintendent. His two police stations in Clermont are under the jurisdiction of the Eastern Regional Police Department.
(The order of police superintendent is reversed, unlike police officer and detective, where level 1 is the lowest and level 3 is the highest.)
Jason asked casually.
"You're already a second-level police officer. Are you interested in becoming a detective? I can arrange for you to participate in an assessment operation."
Assessment action?
Li Yisen instantly became excited. If he could get through him, he would become a detective and be in charge of major cases instead of trivial ones.
"I do."
"However, the quota is not for our police department, nor for the city of Clermont. Our candidates and detectives have already been assigned."
Lee Esen understood, of course, that each police station only had two or three slots for assessment, and there were far more than a hundred Level 2 officers.
Anyone who passes the assessment becomes a candidate for detective, and can fill in when a detective position becomes vacant.
After all, the number of detectives is regulated, and any additional one would require an extra penny, which would need to be discussed and approved by the local government.
Lee Ethan felt a pang of reluctance as he thought about leaving Clermont after less than three months, and images of familiar faces flashed through his mind.
Kaia, Evelyn, Fiona, Andrew, and others.
But reluctance couldn't stop his ambition to climb higher; all good things must come to an end.
Li Yisen's voice carried a hint of determination.
"I can accept it."
"Very well, you can leave now."
.
In the meeting room of the third patrol group, Li Yisen sat in his usual spot in a good mood, his shoulder insignia now displaying the rank of second-level police officer with two diagonal stripes.
Superintendent Andrew assigned tasks as usual, but this time he specifically requested Evelyn.
"Evelyn, stand up. Your instructor is back. It's time to conduct the unfinished apprenticeship assessment."
Internship assessment?
We won't let him come, will we?
Lee Esen asked.
"Now that Ottilia is back, she should be in charge."
"Ethan, you were resting yesterday, so you didn't know that Ottilia is taking her detective exam, so Evelyn needs your evaluation."
Li Yisen glanced at the 30-year-old policewoman in surprise. He hadn't expected her to get the spot. If he had solved the case earlier, the spot might have been his.
Lee Esen nodded.
"I see."
"Well, if Evelyn doesn't pass, she'll have to continue her training as a Level 1 police officer. Don't go easy on her."
Evelyn's eyes hardened at this.
"Don't worry, I will definitely pass."
Li Yisen looked at the papers he had received and felt troubled; he had never done this kind of thing before.
I hope you won't let me down.
.
After the meeting was dismissed, Lee Ethan did not immediately prepare for patrolling. Instead, he found Andrew to ask for his key points before leaving.
Beside the police car, Li Yisen, dressed in plain clothes, spoke calmly.
"Today I will not be wearing a police uniform to accompany you. I will only be observing, offering no advice, and not assisting in the investigation. All choices are yours to make. After all, once you become a full-fledged police officer, you may need to go on duty alone sometimes, understand?"
Evelyn swallowed hard and nodded. Strictly speaking, this was the first time she had handled a case "alone."
"Understood, we can set off now."
Li Yisen was speechless as he looked at the policewoman sitting in the passenger seat with her seatbelt fastened. "You understand, so why are you sitting in the passenger seat?"
"If I don't find the problem soon, I'll lose points."
"oh oh."
Evelyn quickly sat in the driver's seat and smiled awkwardly.
"It's mainly because I'm used to it."
"Don't make the same mistake again."
.
A dog that keeps barking, a neighbor complaining about the noise, an old man who dislikes the police.
"I'll take care of my dog myself."
Evelyn glanced at the hostile old man but didn't pay him any mind, and spoke to the complaining neighbor.
"If you have a decibel meter, that would be best. If not, record the conversation with your phone. We'll use that as evidence for the fine."
After the policewoman finished speaking, she looked at the furious old man.
"Please cooperate, I don't want to come back again."
"understood."
In the car, Evelyn smiled radiantly.
"Senior, I did a flawless job, didn't I?"
"It's really good."
Lee Esen wrote "excellent" twice on the first case on the form, and next to it was the number of cards drawn: 2.
"But don't get arrogant, the day has just begun."
"uh-huh."
