Harry Potter, the savior of Night City
Chapter 29 Trial
"This is... the Devil's Web?" Hermione composed herself, looked down at the blasted, dry, and hardened object, kicked at one of the relatively intact fragments, and identified it.
"Oh, I'm so glad we know what it's called now," Ron joked. "This will be a great help to us."
"Ron!" Hermione angrily raised her fist and slammed it into Ron's head.
"Ouch!" Ron covered his head, no longer daring to tease him.
"Alright, this way," Harry said, pointing to the only corridor. "If I'm not mistaken, Quirrell should have gotten there before us; he's the one who put the harp up there."
"Coming!" Hermione immediately caught up, with Ron following behind, clutching his head and wincing in pain. It seemed Hermione had indeed used a lot of force.
The corridor was long, and besides their footsteps, you could also hear the sound of water dripping down the walls, a strange rustling sound.
"This design is a bit too spooky," Harry thought to himself. Why do people in the wizarding world always design things in a dark and damp place? He didn't understand.
"Harry, did you hear anything?" Ron asked quietly beside Harry.
Harry listened carefully and found that the strange rustling sound seemed to have become louder, and there were also tinkling sounds coming from it.
"It sounds a bit like flapping wings and ringing bells," Harry identified, then looked up and saw a ray of light. "Come on, that should be the end."
They arrived at the end of the corridor, where a huge, brightly lit room stood before them. Under the high, arched ceiling, countless tiny, shimmering birds flew about. Ha used the magnifying glass to see the true nature of these "birds"—they were keys with wings.
"Will we be attacked if we just walk through the room?" Ron asked hesitantly.
"I don't know, so I'll go try it first." Harry knew that there was a layer of armor under his faux skin anyway, so it shouldn't be torn. So, he told Ron and Hermione to stand in the hallway and walked towards the wooden door opposite the room.
He slowly walked to the wooden door. The "birds" did not attack him, so it seemed that everything was fine for now. Harry pulled the handle of the wooden door, and as expected, the door was locked.
"It's safe, come on over." Harry waved to Ron and Hermione, signaling them to come over.
Ron and Hermione ran to Harry's side, and they also found that the door was locked. No matter how they pushed or pulled it, it was no use. Even opening Alohoy didn't help.
"What do we do? The door is clearly under a spell; we can't open it without the key," Ron asked.
"The keys are over there." Harry pointed to the flock of birds. Hermione looked closely at the birds above her head and also noticed that they were a bunch of keys.
"So, one of us has to find the real key hidden among all those keys?" Hermione said, offering her guess. "Unsurprisingly, the key we're looking for should be a large key, and shaped like a doorknob." She looked at the keyhole and said.
"Got it." Harry noticed some flying brooms by the door, grabbed one, hopped on, and flew towards the key cluster.
These magical keys dodged very quickly, each one as fast as the Golden Snitch, but who is Harry? He has a cheat code! Sionstein activated, and the flow of time slowed down in his eyes. The speed of the key group in front of him was not even as fast as Harry's walking speed. He easily found the real useful key hidden in the key group. It was a large silver key with drooping wings, as if it had been roughly grabbed and stuffed into the keyhole.
Harry leaped forward, his reinforced tendons providing a jet propulsion double jump in mid-air, easily grabbing the nearly stationary key. Sianwistan shut down, and Harry landed on the ground, rolling to dissipate the force. He then stood up, gracefully dusted himself off, and inserted the key into the lock. The other keys in the sky seemed dazed, apparently not yet reacting.
The wooden door opened, and the key slipped from Harry's hand like a slippery eel. Harry ignored the key, pushed open the door, and found himself in a huge room. As soon as they stepped inside, the room was suddenly brightly lit, illuminating the scene inside.
A huge chessboard stood at their feet, with large black pieces around them and white pieces opposite them.
"Okay, I guess this level is chess," Ron said. "Wizard chess, no less."
"Wait a minute, let me try to avoid playing the game." Harry really didn't want to play Wizard's Chess again. The first time he played, he was almost tortured by Ron. He took out a grenade from his pocket, pulled out the pin, and threw it at the white chess piece.
"boom!"
The grenade exploded, sending white chess pieces flying everywhere. But in the next instant, all the flying pieces stopped in mid-air, then flew back to their original positions and reassembled into the shape of chess pieces.
"Okay, looks like that won't work." Harry shrugged, gesturing for Ron to begin his performance.
"So, now it means that each of us will become a pawn." With that, he walked to an empty spot and said to Harry and Hermione, "I am now standing in the position of a knight, which means that I am now acting as a knight."
Ron pointed to the other two empty seats and said to Harry and Hermione, "Harry, you go be the bishop, and Hermione, you go be the castle."
Harry and Hermione agreed to his command and acted as chess pieces. Ron carefully directed all the pieces to move, his mind highly focused, and fine beads of sweat appeared on his forehead.
"Harry, move four squares to the right and forward."
Hermione, move forward five squares.
.........
With Ron's guidance, Black's advantage grew larger and larger. White pieces were constantly being knocked down by Black, and Black pieces were also being knocked away by White. To ensure Harry and Hermione's safety, Ron kept changing his moves and twice saved Harry and Hermione from danger.
"Let me think... I've got it!" Ron suddenly had an idea, as if a lightbulb had popped into his head. He turned to Harry and the others and said, "I've got a plan. Let me get eaten, and that'll be how we win."
"No way! What a terrible idea!" Hermione yelled at Ron.
"I don't think your body is harder than a stone weapon," Harry said. He knew there wouldn't be any danger, since Old Deng was watching, but he couldn't say it out loud, otherwise it wouldn't feel like a trial.
"This is the only way; these pieces shouldn't go all out against me." Before Hermione could continue, Ron said, "This is chess, this is war. If I'm captured, Harry will checkmate the king!"
"But---"
"This must be done!"
Before they could continue speaking, Ron moved forward a square, and the White Queen stepped forward, raising her arm and slamming it down on Ron's head. Ron fell to the ground, and Hermione screamed, but she did not leave her square.
Harry saw it clearly: the White Queen's attack was slowed down at the last moment, which was undoubtedly Dumbledore's doing. So he didn't have any particularly strong emotional reaction; on the contrary, he breathed a sigh of relief.
The White Queen dragged Ron off the board; it seems Ron was knocked unconscious.
Harry moved three squares to the left, and the White Queen threw her crown on the ground, indicating that they had won. All the remaining white pieces made way for them.
Hermione immediately ran to Ron to check on him.
"Phew, he's knocked out, he's alright." She turned to Harry and said.
Harry nodded, and together with Hermione, helped Ron lie down in a comfortable position. Then they stood up and headed to the next room.
Unbeknownst to them, Dumbledore dispelled the Disillusionment Charm and used his Headmaster's Permission to Apparate Ron to the Infirmary (Apparate is not allowed at Hogwarts, but only those with Headmaster's Permission can). He then quickly Apparated back to catch up, continuing to use the Disillusionment Charm to watch the show.
