Chapter 68 Overwhelming Power
Chapter 68 Overwhelming Power
"I ask, you answer; if you utter a single extra word, you're dead."
Rod came to Billard after he recovered from the pain.
The tip of his sword, Ice Edge, rested on his neck, its chill touching his skin.
The neck is a sensitive and vulnerable area, and Billard's body couldn't help but shudder when stimulated.
"How does the kingdom's so-called smuggling operate? Describe it to me as you know it," Rhodes inquired.
This is also what he is most curious about right now.
Despite the various things he had recently learned, Rod clearly understood the enormous influence of the smuggling business.
But since he wasn't involved, he was just an outsider seeing things from a distance.
There has always been a lack of practical understanding.
Now that I've become a pioneering knight of the North, I need to figure out these things.
We don't want to end up fighting the barbarians while the nobles in the rear are desperately supplying the enemy with food and equipment.
That would really infuriate him.
This kind of secret would kill an ordinary person, but in the eyes of someone of high status, it is already an open secret.
Billard took a deep breath and answered without hesitation:
"I'm not familiar with the internal procedures of the kingdom, but after smuggled goods are delivered to the duchy, 50% of the profits must be handed over to the border guards. Then the goods are transported to a neutral city in the north, which is a trading point tacitly approved by the kings of the north."
"The nearest neutral city is Cliffcorn. As long as we deliver the goods there, we can exchange them for supplies with the tribes in the North. No one will cause trouble there."
After listening to his detailed explanation, Rod had a general understanding of the smuggling trade.
The situation in the North is unique, with not only the various tribal kings ruling their own territories, but also many neutral cities.
Neutral cities are complex entities that possess formidable military strength but do not participate in conflicts.
It gradually became the default trading point for various tribes, where they exchanged goods and traded goods, leading to a thriving commercial sector.
It was different from what Rod had imagined.
The so-called smuggling by the kingdom, once the veil of mystery is lifted, is actually quite simple.
It's simply about taking goods from within the kingdom and selling them in neutral cities in the north.
However, this process requires three relationships.
The first is through channels within the kingdom; the second is by bribing the border guards of the duchy; and the third is through the barbarian city-state relations along the road from the border to neutral cities.
The first two points are easy to understand. As for the third point, Rod considered the flat-topped mountain where he was located.
If he wanted to do business in the nearest neutral city, Cliffshead, he had to pass through the Wolf Chieftain's Sarko Ice City.
With roads blocked, it would be necessary to have connections within the wolf chieftain's inner circle to get them to let the caravan pass.
The same applies to other routes.
The Marque family's Golden Lanterns had a good relationship with the Mole Tribe, and were able to trade across their cities.
It's just a pity that their relationship was a little too good.
Rhodes shook his head, looking at the dead leader of the Golden Lamp and the unconscious girl beside him.
So good that they turned on each other and betrayed each other on the spot.
Judging from their conversation just now, this girl is actually Sir Fuhrer's fiancée?
Rod picked up a blanket from the side, went to the girl's side, and covered her naked body, indicating that he had nothing to say.
This guy is really outrageous; he even brought his wife along when he went out to explore new frontiers.
Do you really think the barbarians are playing house with you?
If he hadn't come, the Mark family would have been involved in some R-rated drama.
On the other side, seeing that Rhodes wasn't paying attention to him for the time being, Bilard breathed a sigh of relief.
He lowered his head to hide his hatred in his eyes, waiting quietly for something.
To ensure safety, the castle housed his men and the elite warriors of the Golden Lamp.
The latter, in particular, are mostly assassins skilled in assassination.
Billard had no idea how this damned bastard knight had gotten in.
But he believed that it wouldn't be long before the assassins would realize something was wrong and come to their aid.
Just then, a heavy thud came from the room below.
Billard's smile had barely appeared when, a second later, his expression froze.
Because what came from below were the painful screams of his men.
One minute ago, in the house downstairs.
Noah glared at his enemy with a displeased expression.
"Brothers, follow me! This is just a bluffing rookie assassin!" one of the assassins roared angrily.
A few seconds earlier, the assassin of the Golden Lamp was awakened in the darkness.
He sensed someone had infiltrated him and was terrified—it was some kind of master assassin.
They actually managed to get past all the security lines outside and sneak here silently!
Just as he had given up hope and closed his eyes to await death, he suddenly realized something was wrong.
Something seems off? He wasn't sure.
Why are this assassin's footsteps so obvious? Hmm? Why did the master run into the wall? Wait, did his dagger miss its mark?
Damn, what a load of rubbish! This guy's a complete newbie, he scared the crap out of me!
The assassin dodged the dagger, jumped up in a rage, and yelled at his companion.
The assassins of the Golden Lantern were awakened and quickly rose to gather around.
"What a piece of junk." Seeing that he had been exposed, Noah threw away the dagger in his hand.
Upon realizing he was surrounded, he showed no fear; instead, he burst into excited laughter.
"What a load of rubbish, assassination! That's more like it! Come here, all of you, stand before me!"
"Ha, playing tricks, let's all take him down!" The assassin sneered, calling to his companions before drawing his dagger and closing in.
To avoid making a sound, Rhodes and his companions did not wear plate armor when they infiltrated.
The group was wearing plate armor, a thick garment with plates riveted to the inside of the fabric, which could barely protect the torso.
The assassins' extensive experience led them to discover this.
The dagger in his hand then turned to attack Noah's limbs.
There was nowhere to hide in the cramped indoor space.
Just as they were about to succeed, the assassin suddenly froze.
He watched as the other person, with a loud shout, gripped the wooden plank bed beside him with both hands.
Then he lifted the entire bed and swung it like a giant sword, slamming it down on them with a whooshing sound!
At this moment, the cramped room trapped them, leaving them with no way to escape.
The immense force carried by the bed board slammed into them, overwhelming them with unstoppable force!
With the crisp sound of bones shattering, the assassins were slapped against the wall like mosquitoes, leaving pools of bright red blood.
"Knight?! You despicable man!" the assassin roared in frustration before dying.
When did the kingdom's knights become so shameless!
If they had known the enemy was a powerful knight, they would have been crazy to dare to fight him head-on!
Hearing the noisy sounds coming from downstairs, like a demolition, Rod chuckled helplessly.
Noah learned orthodox knightly skills, particularly the greatsword, which emphasizes strength.
Asking him to carry out assassinations in the dark is a bit too much to ask of him.
It's not surprising that things turned out this way, Rhodes.
The commotion here was so great that it alerted the soldiers outside, but the impact was minimal.
It was almost time, Rod looked out the window.
The night has passed, and the roads are no longer pitch black.
The shield-wielding soldiers who had been waiting in the distance had already set out, marching in orderly formation towards Mole Town.
Meanwhile, Holmes and others at the high wall took action and opened the gates in the wall.
The soldiers of Mole Town, lacking command, woke up and looked around in bewilderment.
Seeing that these people were calm and composed, and their actions were well-trained, he didn't even dare to go up and ask them questions.
The soldier assumed it was the lord's order, so he just yawned to himself and ignored it completely.
Rhodes knew the battle was over when the Ironwall's shield-and-spear soldiers poured in.
The low, dilapidated buildings in Mole Town are not effective shelters.
The soldiers here aren't even qualified to fight in urban warfare.
Without the protection of the high walls, they would be powerless against the strangulation of the shield-and-spear soldiers.
