Chapter 1008 The Gods Are a Lie

"Malikis, he's not important. I'm not saying he's really unimportant; he's searching for some power and weapons to fight against Odin, and Mangogol, the Casket of Winter, is one of them."

Loki didn't seem worried about Malekith at all. After all, Odin's strength was undeniable. As long as the Winter's Box didn't weaken Odin, the Almighty Father could bind all the resistance forces Malekith had gathered together and spin them like tops.

Therefore, Malekith dared not make any rash moves unless he could find a way to restrain Odin's power; otherwise, he really wouldn't dare to utter a single word.

"I heard Odin speak of part of the truth about those damned shadow gods, and ever since then I've been wondering, could I possibly toy with such powerful beings? Could I possibly sever the cycle of Ragnarok or even completely annihilate them!"

Loki, standing outside, smiled: "At that time, everyone will know that it was Loki Laufeyson who saved the world!"

After thinking for a moment, Peter understood: "You want to be a star, the most dazzling person. You want everyone to recognize you, Loki."

Loki chuckled sheepishly after hearing this: "No, no, it's not because of that—lowly reason."

But the answer is, of course, yes.

Loki is essentially a child who craves recognition. He certainly doesn't lack love; in fact, one could argue that Odin's excessive focus on this son is a major reason for Loki's current personality. Odin has many wives and children, but he only focuses on raising two—Thor and Loki—which is also one of the reasons for Loki's current personality.

He was that unique child, with only a reckless and straightforward older brother to compare himself to, and all he had to do was show his father that he was better than his brother. It could be said that it was Odin's preferential treatment that made Loki feel special.

Of course, he was indeed different, but that wasn't the reason Loki thought of. Odin's emphasis on cultivating Loki was essentially political; Loki was the rightful heir to Jotunheim and Laufey's only son. He treated the crown prince of Asgard and the heir to Jotunheim equally in his upbringing, so that they would develop brotherly affection and thus make Jotunheim and Asgard a brotherly nation in the future.

However, he then lied to Loki, saying that Loki was his son. He told him that Loki was an Asgardian, not some frost giant. When the truth was revealed, this rift in identity created the first major conflict in Loki's life.

That's not even the biggest conflict.

"You need to prove that you are an Asgardian, that you are Odin's true son, and that you are not a bad person. You are a hero to Asgard, a great hero, stronger than your brother. Perhaps you don't need to, but you need to let everyone know that Loki is the one they all misjudged."

After a moment of silence, Peter decided to be frank: "I feel like all you've been doing from beginning to end is proving yourself, even now running errands for the Superior. What has the Superior shown you that makes you so willing to work for him?"

"Come on, that's not true, Spider-Man. Maybe your perspective as a mortal is limiting you. You don't know how powerful the Beyonders are. Besides, it's not like I've never been someone's lackey before—Thanos, Malekith, just bow your head, it's nothing."

Peter hummed in agreement: "I have a spider-sense; I can tell if you're lying."

Loki's smile froze upon hearing this, but then he seemed to have discovered something amusing and laughed again, then asked Peter, "Did you notice that guy? That older version of me seems to be from the same world as that old man Thor in your group. That guy says he's my future."

Peter exclaimed "Ah!" and then nodded. Loki continued, "Simply put, he told me that no matter what I do, Asgard will only remember that evil god of lies, and I can never change how other people see me."

"If you ask me—"

"What you say is useless, Spider-Man. Actually, what he says is useless. I did struggle with this for a while, but when I saw what the Concord Engine showed me, I realized it was all bullshit. Even the most terrifying enemies I have to deal with, the so-called Shadow Gods, are nothing compared to the Beyonders."

Peter felt that it couldn't be calculated that way. Given this current Superhuman's position and combat power, you couldn't find many more powerful characters who could rival him.

However, Peter decided to continue asking Loki's questions: "You saw the truth about the Shadow Gods inside the Concord Engine? What exactly is it? I mean, I already have quite a bit of information, but I don't know the specifics. Everyone's just playing the riddle-maker."

Loki gathered his thoughts briefly, then looked at Peter: "How much do you know about our ancient gods? Spider-Man?"

"Um, Hydra is backed by Set, Vishanti has members like Oshutu, I've faced Sithon directly, and I don't have much contact with Gaia yet."

Loki's expression changed again, looking at Peter with pity, truly wondering what kind of life his friend was living. He could only continue, "What about the War of the Old Gods?"

I've heard a little about it.

"That makes sense. In Earth's ancient times, when the ancient gods roamed freely, the ancient gods fell into infighting as Set discovered that devouring their own kind could strengthen them."

What followed was a magnificent history, but one that had nothing to do with Peter: most of the Old Gods chose to fall, while Oshutu wandered among the stars, Sithon became obsessed with chaos magic, and Gaia ended the Old God War by giving birth to the last Old God and the first new god, the sun god Atum, allowing this powerful deity to devour all the fallen Old Gods.

"But not all the ancient gods chose to fall. It's easy to imagine. Some of the ancient gods who were unwilling to kill each other hid in an extra dimension created by their most powerful being. Until the birth of humankind, they appeared among the earliest humans and became their gods. The earliest mythological gods, the gods worshipped by the gods."

"Then, with the migration and division of mankind, they became slightly different in the stories told by different peoples. This difference gradually expanded, and new gods were born from them in regions such as Northern Europe, Greece, Mesopotamia, India, Egypt, and the Celts."

"The Shadow Gods, they exist in the shadow of the gods, but in reality we are their shadows. We don't even truly exist; we are merely byproducts of the Shadow Gods. The gods themselves are a lie, Spider-Man."

Peter suddenly countered Loki's question: "But aren't you the god of lies?"
