Chapter 645 The Army Assembles, the Great Battle Will Begin
After reading the order, Jean didn't leave immediately. Instead, she walked up to Logan in the wasteland.
He—he was Logan, but not the Wolverine she knew.
This Logan was much shorter than his counterparts in other universes. His back was no longer straight, but bent like a withered tree bent by years and suffering. His worn-out brown leather jacket was covered in oil stains and dark red grime, and the cuffs were worn so that loose threads were showing.
But thankfully—thankfully, the familiar light still shone in his eyes. Despite all the hardships he had endured, he was still the same Wolverine.
Logan's expression became noticeably more uneasy. He could sense a familiar yet unfamiliar energy emanating from the piano—warm, yet carrying a devastating power, much like someone from his memory.
It was a sweet, bittersweet memory that ultimately turned into a painful one.
The other woman always wears a yellow battle suit, with a bright smile and a determined gaze. She will soothe his emotions with telepathy when he loses control, hand him an ice-cold beer after a battle, and jokingly call him "the grumpy old wolf."
But at the end of memory lies a corpse covered in claw marks.
"No! Don't touch my head with your abilities!" Logan understood almost instantly what had just happened. This harp—she was using her psychic abilities to access his memories.
Logan even stretched out his claws, but in the end he just suppressed his anger, turned around, walked to the corner, leaned against the wall behind him, and slowly slid down.
His hands were resting on his knees, his head slightly lowered, and the white hair on his forehead obscured the emotions in his eyes.
Aisley and Judd were standing to the side. The two little ones wanted to get closer to Logan, but Rune grabbed them and teleported them both outside the pure white palace.
The thought of their father meeting his ex-lover would shatter the two kids' worldview. "The other world—are they alright?" After a long while, Logan finally mustered the courage to speak, but his voice was so low it was almost a whisper.
He didn't dare to look up, didn't dare to look into Qin's eyes, for fear of seeing anger and condemnation in them.
"They're all fine," Jean walked to his side and slowly knelt down to look him in the eye. "Scott and the others died several times, but thankfully, thanks to the Rebirth Protocol, they all came back to life—"
At this point, a hint of sadness appeared in Qin's eyes.
Krakow's resurrection protocol has strict rules and limitations. Several X-Men members refused the right to be resurrected and died forever on the path of saving mutants, and moreover—
Can those who are resurrected through the resurrection protocol truly be considered themselves?
Logan's shoulders trembled slightly. He looked up and saw Jean's face reflected in his pupils. She was more powerful and gentler than the other Jean. At this moment, he felt as if he had returned to Xavier's Academy many years ago.
It was dusk when he was drinking in a corner of the training hall. Qin came over, sat down next to him, and said nothing, just quietly kept him company.
"I killed them," he suddenly spoke after a moment of silence, his voice filled with endless remorse, "In my universe, I killed everyone with my own hands. Scott, Charles, Hank—I killed them all."
"I was fooled by those bastards. I thought they were the enemy, I thought I was protecting them—and in the end, I destroyed everything—" Logan's eyes reddened slightly, but he held back his tears. "It was me—it was the destruction of the X-Men that left the Avengers fighting alone—"
"It was I who caused the near-total annihilation of our heroes—" His voice trailed off, "It was I who left the remaining heroes to face the monsters of the Red Skull, it was I who destroyed everything—"
Jean didn't reply, but simply hugged Logan tightly. The golden flames around her flickered, but Logan felt no burning pain, only warmth—
After a long while, Qin finally released Logan.
"We should go." Jean stood up, offering a hand. "Let's fight once again for mutants, for this world!"
Logan was stunned for a long time before finally grasping Qin's hand and standing up.
"good!"
"Fellow countrymen, the threat from another dimension is imminent. To protect our homeland, and for the survival of mutants, I hereby declare that all who can fight are warriors!"
As Magneto finished speaking, deafening cheers and shouts erupted in the square, rising and falling like waves. Among the crowd, young mutants had burning eyes, gripping advanced weapons tightly in their hands, seemingly eager to prove their worth through battle.
But there were also some veterans who were noticeably more silent. These were people who had been through countless battles and had participated in saving the world or rescuing their compatriots. They knew just how cruel war really was.
The most conspicuous group was the second-generation mutants, dressed in gray uniforms with almost no emotion in their eyes. Their formation was exceptionally neat and meticulous, and their equipment was almost identical. If it weren't for their appearance, Rune would have thought they were the Clockwork army.
At this moment, Rune was following behind the White Queen. His black robe stood out among the group of people dressed in pure white, attracting a lot of attention.
A short while later, a heavyweight figure arrived in front of Rune, and this time there were no Magiks pushing his cart behind him.
Rune nodded slightly, as if to greet the former moderate leader of mutants.
Professor X seemed completely oblivious to Rune's perfunctory attitude, and shakily extended his hand with a smile on his face. Rune could only reluctantly shake his hand.
"You seem quite unhappy?" Charles asked with a smile. He looked very old, so it was impossible to feel any ill will towards him.
Rune glanced at Charles. "Of course, I'm not exactly happy."
Especially when he saw a large number of children who looked only fifteen or sixteen years old below the square, the incongruity of the second-generation mutants gave Rune a glimpse of Krako's future.
Without Mr. Fantastic overthrowing Doom's rule and allowing its fragments to return to their respective spacetime frameworks, Krakow would have been completely destroyed by the Civil War.
"I know why you're unhappy, powerful mage," Charles continued with a smile. He followed Rune's gaze to the most conspicuous group of mutants in the square. "Don't worry, I promised those second-generation mutants that if they survive this time, I will amend the law again."
Charles looked at Rune again. "The second generation of mutants will not be made, and they will enjoy all the rights of Krakor citizens."
"You should have done this a long time ago, but I'm curious, how did you manage to suppress the entire council? Didn't the Black Kings cause any trouble?"
Charles chuckled in response to Rune's question.
"As the founder of the nation, I should have some privileges, shouldn't I?"
