Chapter 566 Mage, open the eyes of these bastards!
"Our goal this time is simple," Nazgrell tried to forget what the mage had looked like when he contained that terrible object. "If possible, completely destroy the portal. If that's not possible, at least break the energy transmission and prevent it from growing."
While verbally stating the purpose of this operation, Nazgrell was actually wondering why rune flesh could bloom like flowers. He had fought for years and seen all sorts of deaths, but this beautiful yet blasphemous sight on a human was truly astonishing.
Good heavens, why would Malfurion say that this person is the key to the success of their trip?
The question was quickly answered—at least partially.
Rune cast a spell on everyone, a spell that caused all sensory mechanisms—sight, arcane detection, and life sensing—to subconsciously ignore their presence, and incidentally created shadow cloaks of shapeshifting spells on all creatures.
Actually, the first spell he thought of was the Muggle banishment spell, but if the enemy was Darkseid, the Muggle banishment spell would be somewhat useless, since the enemy had no shortage of gods under his command.
Although he hadn't tested it, Rune thought that the word "Muggle" probably didn't include the concept of gods.
"Me too?" a green dragon exclaimed in surprise. He sounded like a young male, his voice still quite immature. He was tugging at the soft cloak with his claws when the lead dragon slapped him.
You've completely disgraced the guardian dragon!
"What a wondrous item," the leading dragon said, changing the subject after reprimanding its wayward junior. "This cloak actually grants the wearer the favor of night and shadow—"
Cairne Bloodhoof and Nazgrare, who were also present, were very interested in the cloak. Both of them were seasoned veterans of war and naturally knew just how terrifying the tactical value of this thing was.
Their home is Ashenvale, which has an exit to the Emerald Dream, but to reach Mount Hyjal as quickly and safely as possible, they still need to cross Felwood Forest.
Felwood was once a lush land of forests and grasslands, but the Burning Legion's iron hooves trampled it, turning it into a strange, dark, and barren wasteland.
This place is filled with bizarre creatures such as wild beasts, cursed bear monsters, satyrs, demons, and even undead, and they are extremely hostile to humanoid beings.
Normally, the three green dragons, along with Nazgrel and Cairne Bloodhoof, and hundreds of Kor'kron guards, could easily clear a fifth of the forest and establish a foothold within a few months, but now, they have no time.
For the sake of Azeroth, they must enter it immediately. And only in such a mixed and chaotic place can they avoid the Parademon's detection as much as possible.
As you venture deeper, the signs of decay in Felwood Forest become increasingly alarming.
-
The trees here are twisted into sharp and ugly shapes, just like in the Emerald Nightmare, with dark green pus oozing from their bark; the ground is covered with a sticky fungal carpet that makes a nauseating squelching sound when stepped on; and the air is filled with a sweet, rotten stench mixed with the smell of sulfur and ozone.
Even more bizarrely, there were some remains of demonoids here. Their bodies had not been eaten by wild beasts, nor had they decayed naturally. Instead, they were shriveled like dried-out fruit, with their skin clinging tightly to their bones and their eye sockets empty.
Even the well-informed Rune couldn't help but exclaim how disgusting it was.
Halfway there, Rune suddenly raised his left hand, signaling everyone to stop.
"What's wrong?" Kane asked in a low voice, but his posture almost made Rune laugh out loud—it was really funny to see such a burly minotaur being so cautious.
Suppressing a laugh, Rune pointed to a tree trunk not far away. There were several artifacts on the trunk that did not belong to the civilization of Azeroth. They were hidden and exquisite, but the infrared rays shooting to one side gave them away.
"It's a sensor that will sound an alarm as soon as someone walks by," Lu En explained the sensor's working principle in the simplest terms possible.
Generally speaking, infrared light is invisible, but for professionals like mages who have unique senses, they can detect it more easily.
Especially when these infrared rays are so dense they resemble a spider web.
Rune didn't know when this device was installed, but if there was an infrared sensor, there might be other types of sensors, though he hadn't noticed them yet.
Kane also saw the device Rune was pointing to, and immediately growled in a low voice, "Tell everyone to be careful of these gadgets! We're inside enemy detection range!"
His words quickly spread throughout the entire Kukalon Guard, yet barely made a sound.
Nazgrell looked around, "Damn it, there are these things everywhere! And we have too many of us, it's almost impossible to bypass enemy surveillance and get through here!"
"Perhaps we should wait a little longer," Kane said softly after a moment's thought. "The Alliance army of Azeroth hasn't yet clashed head-on with those Parademons, and the attention of those otherworldly visitors hasn't been diverted. To complete our mission, we'd better—"
Kane shook his head; his meaning was already quite clear.
Their squad numbered over a hundred, and facing such a complex and dense surveillance network, it was almost impossible for them to evade the enemy's eyes.
Although this hundred-man squad was powerful, with two legendary warriors, a group of battle-hardened orc veterans, and even three green dragons escorting them, if the alarm was triggered, they would face an endless army of parademons—
These troops are still somewhat insufficient.
Therefore, in order to complete their mission, they would be better off waiting for the Allied Forces of Azeroth to land in Durotar, arrive in Ashenvale, and launch an attack on the Parademon army from another direction to draw enemy fire.
In this way, they were able to march rapidly and reach the summit of Mount Hyjal with lightning speed to destroy the portal.
"Actually, we have better options," Rune shrugged. "Who do you prefer to fight alongside?"
"What?" Nazgrell was taken aback, but still answered instinctively, "Of course it's our Warchief Thrall! He created the new Horde, he saved the orcs from corruption and enslavement, and I am willing to follow him forever."
Nazgrell is an orc warrior who has followed Thrall since the liberation of the internment camps. He witnessed how Thrall led the Horde across the sea and established Orgrimmar with his extraordinary strategic mind and courage to lead from the front. He also went through the Battle of Mount Hyjal and the War of the Otherworld together, so he admires Thrall from the bottom of his heart.
However, Nazgrere was dumbfounded when a dozen or so Thralls emerged from the soil before him.
Is this what a mage is like?
