American comic book police officer survival manual
Chapter 2 How do you manage to sleep?
Noticing the hostility in the female college student's eyes, Lucius immediately stated that he meant no harm.
"I'm Lucius, a newly arrived patrol officer in Gotham City. I don't mean anything by it, I'm just curious why you're arguing, and if there's anything I can do to help..."
America's police system is very chaotic. As the lowest-ranking ordinary police officer, she not only has to take on patrol duties, but sometimes also traffic control, and arrests. She has to do almost every kind of hard work.
Seeing the new police officer take the initiative to be friendly, Pamela's expression softened considerably: "This child was lost and wanted to pick the flowers over here, but I stopped him."
"defloration?"
Upon considering the college student's major, Lucius seemed to understand why she was so dissatisfied.
"Little girl, you can't touch the flowers and plants in the academy. These might be the graduation theses of your older brothers and sisters. If you pick them, their years of hard work might be wasted..."
Knowing that the police officers in America were not well-liked, Lucius was not annoyed by Pamela's hostility. He simply squatted down and looked at the somewhat flustered little girl at eye level.
"No...no, I asked, and the lady over there said we can pick these." The pitiful little girl pointed to the cleaning staff in the distance and explained to Lucius.
What? You can pick them?
Aren't these flowers and plants for scientific research? Then why is this female college student in such a hurry?
Looking up in confusion, Lucius saw Pamela in her school uniform and found her face flushed and unable to speak.
"Even ordinary flowers and plants... shouldn't be trampled and picked at will..."
Seemingly aware that she was in the wrong, the red-haired female college student lowered her head and muttered softly.
She also loves these plants and often comes to water and care for them in this flower bed. She really couldn't bear to see them broken or picked, which is why she spoke somewhat emotionally in her nervous state...
"Okay... what do you want to do with the flowers?"
Seemingly understanding the cause and effect of the matter, Lucius continued to communicate with the little girl.
While Pamela might have been a bit loud before, it was still a little strange that a young girl would come to Gotham University alone to pick flowers.
Where are your parents?
When asked about her elders, the girl, feeling wronged, suddenly felt her eyes well up with tears, and large tears slid down her cheeks.
"Ugh... because my aunt is sick, I wanted Aunt Nora to see these flowers that she loves most... She's very unwell right now and can't get out of bed, and I don't have a phone, so..."
Thinking of her loved one lying pale in the hospital bed, unable even to get out of bed and walk, the girl's voice choked with emotion.
Her little hands, covered in mud, wiped her snow-white cheeks, leaving unsightly mud streaks.
She just wanted to bring some comfort to her aunt in her own way, but she didn't have the money to buy flowers at the florist. So she searched all the way and finally found her aunt's favorite flower, Black-Eyed Susan, in a flower bed at Gotham University.
Seeing the dust clinging to the girl's limbs, and the bits of dirt staining her pretty little dress, Lucius felt as if he'd been punched in the heart. He slowly turned around...
Pamela looked embarrassed, like a child who had made a mistake. Even her large black-rimmed glasses couldn't hide the panic on her face. Her interlaced fingers and turned-in feet showed how extremely embarrassed she was.
Clearly, the female college student, now filled with guilt, also didn't know why the girl was picking flowers; otherwise, she wouldn't have had a conflict with the little one.
"I'm sorry, officer, I didn't know I couldn't pick the flowers here. I'll leave now..." Wiping away her tears, the timid girl was like a frightened young animal, only thinking about escaping the scene as quickly as possible.
"No...you can take these flowers with you...this lady just doesn't want you to hurt the plants, after all, they have lives too."
Lucius quickly grabbed the timid girl, feeling he had to do something, otherwise he'd probably wake up in the middle of the night and slap himself twice.
"If we just pick the flowers, they will wither soon... We can take the flowers with their roots, so as not to upset Auntie."
Placing a withered flower by a patient's bedside is dangerous no matter how you look at it.
Faced with Lucius's attempt to persuade her to stay, the little girl's eyes finally lit up with hope, and her tone became more expectant: "Is...is it okay?"
"Of course!" Feeling no movement behind him, Lucius anxiously stood up and frantically tried to signal to the standing female college student with his eyes.
Sensing Lucius's signal, Pamela responded after a brief delay, "Ah...that's fine! Besides, Black-Eyed Susan has a strong life force; she should be able to bring more hope to the patient..."
Pamela had no reason to refuse the idea of simply transplanting the lovely flowers without harming them.
Pamela was extremely grateful for the police officer's help at the crucial moment. Her gaze towards Lucius softened considerably, a change from her previous hostility.
However, Lucius's gaze towards the female college student grew increasingly hostile...
A pot! A flowerpot!!! You can't just carry it with your bare hands!!! Doesn't this college student know any manners?!
If you hurt this sensible and kind girl, how will you sleep these next few days?
"Basin... basin..."
Lucius frantically mouthed hints until he finally saw a look of realization on Pamela's face, at which point he breathed a sigh of relief.
Seizing the opportunity to salvage the situation, Pamela quickly said, "I'll go get the container now, you guys wait a moment!"
Upon receiving the instruction, the female college student fled the scene as if escaping. Less than three minutes later, she rushed back, looking disheveled, carrying a flowerpot.
Looking into the little girl's expectant and hopeful eyes, Lucius breathed a sigh of relief and made room for Pamela: "You can transplant them; I'm worried about damaging the flowers."
"good!"
To make up for her previous mistake, Pamela didn't say a word, picked up a small shovel, and quickly got to work on the little girl.
These carefully tended flowers, with their pale yellow petals and black stamens, stood out beautifully in the school's flowerbeds, which explains why Pamela was reluctant to part with them.
"Black-eyed Susan is a type of morning glory. They are very easy to grow; just water them regularly..." Pamela said as she handed the flower to the girl.
Holding a rather heavy flowerpot, the little girl, her face covered in mud, smiled happily: "Yes! I understand!"
Having received the best gift, the girl took small, quick steps and rushed toward the school gate.
"No, I have to see her off."
Watching the little guy's retreating figure, Lucius frowned, worried that something might happen.
While it's true that in Gotham City, the fact that this young girl could walk all the way to the university suggests her aunt's address must be nearby, this is, after all, Gotham...
"Hey! But I haven't thanked you yet..."
Seeing that the helpful police officer was about to leave, a flustered Pamela rummaged through her pockets, quickly pulled out a notebook, and hurriedly wrote down her phone number.
"Here you go! Thank you so much this time. Next time... I'll treat you to a meal!"
Nervous and shy, Pamela lowered her head, but Lucius casually took the note in her hand.
"Contact me again next time if there are any problems!" Lucius, completely oblivious to Pamela's emotions, kept his eyes glued to the little girl's retreating figure and quickly caught up with the cheerful little one...
......
In a spotless, brightly lit hospital room, a pale-faced female patient lay on the bed, unresponsive to her surroundings.
Beside this haggard patient, a man with a weathered face and gray hair, his eyes filled with heartbreak, kept murmuring his wife's name—
"Nora...I will heal you...at any cost..."
"Uncle Victor, I've come to visit Aunt."
A soft, clear child's voice broke the silence of the ward, startling the man as if he were awakening from a dream. He slowly looked towards the direction of the door...
