Kamura Chi sneered: "
Instead of being forced to conduct research, feel you have an "opportunity" and actively fight for freedom.
"Interest is the best teacher. For the sake of freedom, everything can be abandoned." The short man remembered these two sentences from the kid's sketchbook: "Do whatever he tells you to do, be a good sponsor, be an excellent collaborator, and fight together to get rid of the evil control of the Kirieloids!"
“Once it’s all done, you and your sister can enjoy life,” the short man laughed. Such a chilling mockery wouldn’t be seen on the face of a child who was losing his baby teeth. Kamimura felt extremely uncomfortable, but the short man kept rambling on: “Kirieloid will grant you immortality.”
“I don’t believe in God,” Kamimura said. “I only believe what I see.”
The short man's expression changed.
Kamimura continued, "You've kept me alive until now, so I believe you can keep my sister alive too. Kirieloid isn't what sustains us; it's your power."
"Okay," the shorter man nodded, giving him a high five with a cold expression, "Pleasure doing business with you?"
Kamimura repeated the words he had just said on the phone: "It's a pleasure working with you."
Chapter Seventy-Five: Undercurrents Beneath the Prosperity
Tokyo, at night, summons its colorful spirit, with the Milky Way in the sky and the lights on earth. Even the Sky Tower is draped in colorful clothes. Compared to the monotonous stars in the distance, the dazzling lights on the ground are more vibrant.
Halloween. Not just Kabukicho, the whole city stays up all night tonight, and the little devils always seem to have inexhaustible energy on a day when they can 'legally run wild'.
Some people who have been hiding in the shadows for years are released on this special day—today is a day when they don't need to pretend, yet everyone who passes by them thinks they are wearing superb makeup. They rarely go out in their true appearance and receive countless envious compliments.
The Lebik aliens also enjoyed these days, and if they could, they wished that Earthlings could do this every day. Children, in particular, would approach people in strange costumes without any suspicion, and wouldn't be afraid of those with unusual figures. Instead, they would come up to them and ask where the "special effects makeup" came from, because they wanted to try it themselves.
The Lebik alien would then reply, "Sure, I'll take you there."
So the group of kids, who were so excited from playing that they lost their bearings, followed them. In any place where no one was paying attention, or even in a fleeting moment, the Lebik aliens had every opportunity to take away the "living slaves," shrink them, pack them up, and stuff them into their spaceship, waiting to be transported back to their home planet and used to force them to repair Lebik.
Unfortunately, even the best plans always encounter difficulties when they are actually implemented.
First came the crazy kids who swarmed around with their scribbled tablecloths. The ones who followed were relatively well-behaved, but most of them were asking the adults for candy—where do the Lebik aliens get candy!
They wouldn't let him leave without giving him candy, surrounding him and making a racket like a bunch of monkeys surrounding a wild man who had wandered in. As a result, half of the groups that the Lebik aliens had sent out had to force their way through the crowd and retreat in defeat, forced to become like farmers waiting for prey, sitting like statues in unnoticed corners, occasionally catching a few stragglers.
The group that had the opportunity to hide was actually lucky.
The other group, however, not only had to escape, but also had to push through crowds who gathered around them, eager to play, after seeing their strange costumes; they had to navigate through brightly decorated streets and alleys, carefully avoiding dead ends, because if they did…
"The monster is there!" shouted a Lebik alien.
The running crows made a sharp turn and swarmed into another intersection. The little fairy lights hanging naturally from the branches swayed in the wind. The crows trampled the candies forgotten by the roadside, ran for a while, and then suddenly burst into screams.
The two people in the front braked suddenly, and the three people behind crashed into them, causing the heads of the five crows to be squeezed together.
"This is a dead end!" a crow's head shrieked. "That guy deliberately blocked our way out, just waiting for us to end up in a dead end!"
"What's the use of saying this now? He's coming after us!" His companion was so angry he wanted to pluck all the hair off the guy who was giving wrong directions.
Five heads looked up at once. The "monster" had chased them for ten blocks, rarely standing brazenly at intersections. Most of the time, it would suddenly jump down from somewhere, falling from the sky, scaring their little hearts so much they almost threw up.
As expected, the leaves wrapped in colorful lights swayed, and above them were windows with pumpkin lantern stickers. The "monster" stood on the rooftop railing, with the bright moon hanging high behind him and the brightly lit buildings. Its equally dazzling molten gold eyes were lowered, silently watching them.
“Five,” the “monster”’s voice wasn’t loud, but it reached the ears of the crow-headed creatures precisely: “Lebik aliens, how many of you have come to take advantage of the chaos tonight?”
"What business is it of yours how many of us come?!" the crow-man who was giving directions yelled. "What planet are you from? Is it bothering you that we're scavenging our things? Can't we just come out here to play a dress-up game like those aliens?"
Aiba Yuu likes the aliens who came to Earth and can learn Earth's language. The Lebik aliens are not aliens who appeared on Earth 30 million years ago, and Aiba Yuu doesn't understand their language. Now that the crow-headed alien has taken the initiative to learn Earth's language, it couldn't be better.
His discovery of the crow-people was purely accidental. Captain Sato—ah, now the section chief—had Aiba Yu warn his vice-captain and team members to be careful of dangerous aliens during the investigation. Aiba Yu, naturally, took it even more seriously, adding a little something to the buttons of the uniform of the "idiot" vice-captain that Sato had mentioned many times.
.
Many aliens appeared tonight, most of whom lived on Earth and usually disguised themselves as ordinary people. In reality, they were just bored and had no time to play. They rarely had the chance to come out and have fun in their true forms, so they mingled with the children and were having a great time. As long as they didn't cause any trouble, Xiang Yeyou turned a blind eye and waited for the regulations to be improved so that TPC could handle it.
The chaotic aura interfered with Aiba Yu's perception. It wasn't until the etched mark on the button of the "idiot" vice-captain's uniform disappeared that Aiba Yu followed his senses and discovered the Crow Man's trail.
Clearly, there were more than just these five people tonight.
Fearing panic, the guards collectively tore tablecloths and bedsheets to create the illusion of wandering spirits. Fully equipped, they were now divided into a dozen small teams, searching the streets for traces of the crow people. When little devils begging for candy approached them, the guards would loudly pretend to be evil spirits to scare them away.
Sensing something amiss, the aliens concealed themselves and blended into the crowd, silently observing the undercurrents beneath the surface of the bustling scene.
“They only play dress-up games and rarely come out for a stroll,” Aiba Yu said. “But you took advantage of the chaos to arrest people. According to the regulations, if you release the hostages and surrender to the guard, you can strive for leniency.”
"Be lenient with your head! Who wants to confess to Earthlings, you traitor among the aliens!" The crow people thought they had encountered a mole, and they raised their guns.
The guy standing on the railing suddenly disappeared!
Feathers bristled! A gust of hot air blew from behind, followed by a powerful punch that caught everyone off guard!
A few minutes later, the guards who had been attacked but had luckily escaped arrived, and more than a dozen armed guards surrounded the five crows' heads that were "obediently" lying on the ground.
The first person to connect to the intercom was immediately met with a barrage of voices flooding the channel before he could even speak: "Vice-Captain, how are you?" "You've been attacked by aliens?" "It's the Crow People! The Crow People from the intelligence!" "I'm approaching you!"
The deputy captain of the ground guard took a deep breath and spoke into the bustling, marketplace-like channel: "The attack was repelled, the Crowmen escaped, and we've now found the knocked-out Crowmen. We'll take them back to base immediately..."
A cheer erupted in the channel.
"Silence!" the vice-captain roared. Once the channel quieted down, he said to Tetsuji Yoshioka, who had been listening to the guard's movements, "Commander Yoshioka, we have discovered an unknown life form that appeared at Delta Force. Requesting instructions."
Chapter Seventy-Six: Sweetness, Sourness, and Bitterness
Nerima-ku, Tokyo.
The person dressed as a butler is slowly pushing the "Cloudy Doll" in a wheelchair.
Aya Kamimura really wanted to wear a dress that matched the butler's tuxedo. Most girls dream of wearing a puffy dress, with lace bows and delicate patterns, swaying around with a sweet, creamy vibe.
But after trying for a long time, her atrophied legs couldn't complete the complicated dress, so in a fit of frustration, she tore the curtains over her head and considered it her holiday makeup done. Fujisawa Sousuke brought a pumpkin lantern to cover her head, then made her put the curtains back on herself, teasing her for looking like a "cloudy doll."
"So what if it's cloudy?" Aya Kamimura was happy to be pushed in her wheelchair without having to lift a finger. "Aren't we too far from the base? We can just wander around the shopping street next to the base."
“I haven’t decided yet to see your brother,” Fujisawa Sousuke blurted out, then realized his mistake and stammered, “Ah, the captain rarely gives us time off, it would be a waste not to go somewhere far away…and don’t you think the city center is more lively?”
Aya Kamimura nodded as she looked at the "monsters and demons" wandering the streets: "The Space Development Center is always full of people in white coats or suits, preparing for academic conferences. Do you know who the most 'outlandish' one is?"
"Who is it?" Fujisawa Sosuke poked his head forward, and Kamimura Aya craned her neck to look at him through the triangular eye hole of the pumpkin lantern: "It's a satellite wrapped in gold! Hahahaha!"
“Aya,” Fujisawa Sousuke opened his mouth, “you have a talent for lame jokes.”
Aya Kamimura was silent for a moment, then said, "Okay, actually I wanted to say 'monster specimen,' but I was afraid of scaring you, so I just said something else."
"Does the Space Development Center also have monster specimens?"
“Yes,” Aya Kamimura said, “The Reicuran aliens’ spaceship uses a dead monster as a power source… It’s a very strange thing, so research on it is a rare large-scale project that is a joint effort between us, the Life Science Research Center, and the New Energy Development Center.”
Fujisawa Sosuke knew this was the perfect time to play the straight man. Ralf had taught him a secret: when someone says something impressive, regardless of whether you understand it or not, just close your eyes and clap. You don't even need to say anything. Fujisawa Sosuke thought this made perfect sense and exclaimed, "Wow, that's really impressive!"
“But it has nothing to do with me,” Aya Kamimura said, not enjoying the praise as he had expected. She looked at the “monsters” swaying back and forth. “My field is mechanical design.”
"You want to change your major?" There was a hint of sourness in her tone, which Fujisawa Sousuke clearly "smelled," so he half-jokingly tried to distract her. Changing majors is not so easy, especially when it involves a niche program in a cutting-edge field. Even two directions with similar origins are like worlds apart.
The jack-o'-lantern nodded up and down: "Yeah, if I had studied biology, I probably would have been able to stand up by now."
Fujisawa Sousuke tightened his grip on the handrail: "You... can stand up even with the help of machinery, let alone now that you're just sitting. I can push you wherever you want to go, that's called VIP treatment!"
"But that's not 'me'."
The curtains painted with stars and moons billowed up, and Aya Kamimura pointed to the "monsters" carrying baskets of candy slung over their elbows. She pointed to one who looked like a vampire, with a face as white as a painted wall—even with his pale face, he was indeed somewhat handsome. No wonder Aya Kamimura noticed him at first glance. This time, Sosuke Fujisawa smelled the sourness rising in his stomach.
Aya Kamimura said, "I've secretly thought that it would be great if there really were monsters, which would mean that there are other powers in this world... People can turn back the clock and not be afraid of birth, aging, sickness and death, not to mention that I could rely on myself to be a normal person."
"Doesn't that sound awful?" Aya Kamimura turned her head again, eager for a response: "There are good yokai and bad yokai that eat people. When I saw Golza, I actually felt happy, thinking, 'As expected, there is an unknown power that has not been discovered,' and so on... It's like I'm some kind of troublemaker."
Fujisawa Sosuke hesitated for a moment, then said seriously, "Actually, it's not that I can't understand it, because I've thought about similar things too. I've told you before, haven't I? I was saved by a monster and a 'magnet god,' and I haven't said a single word to them, not even a thank you."
"If I see him, I must tell him, 'Thank you for saving me. God, could you teach me magic? I want to be as powerful as you.'" That way, the old captain and his predecessors won't die, and the next time a monster like Golza appears, he won't have to watch the GUTS team fight while he can only stay on the TPC-β, not even daring to come within sight.
Aya Kamimura laughed: "'Magnet God'? What is that? You're giving people random names. Maybe he won't want to see you because of that."
"It's the magnet inside the teru teru bozu," Fujisawa Sosuke scratched his hair, his hands covered in hairspray, and quickly wiped them awkwardly on his clothes. "I don't know why it glows, it made the woman on Mokujinsei scream in agony, like a priest applying a talisman to exorcise a ghost..."
"Because of this, you bought the best and most expensive dolls to keep as a keepsake, and even went to my brother's dry cleaners?"
“Yeah, who knows, maybe if we keep making offerings, a deity will appear again,” Fujisawa Sosuke muttered with his eyes closed. “Maybe he’s been watching my performance all along!”
The two continued strolling along the street. Aya Kamimura bought him some candy that looked bloody, made on purpose to celebrate the holiday. Sousuke Fujisawa hesitated for a moment but still put it in his mouth, crunching it as he bit it with a furrowed brow.
Sousuke Fujisawa doesn't like sugar; it makes him too fat. The captain will change to a target plate covered with various physical training exercises and say it's a test of luck. Sousuke always feels that the captain's luck clashes with his own. Although there are simple events that are very tempting, the captain always manages to hit the target plate that starts at 5 kilometers.
Sosuke, refusing to believe in bad luck, grabbed the dart and threw it himself, while the captain readily complied. He watched helplessly as his dart got stuck on the most nightmarish weighted frog jump, right below the "jackpot without training" zone. If it had fallen just a little bit more, he could have won a prize no less than the lottery.
The captain's target plates were all divided equally, unlike the unscrupulous merchants who liked to cut the good rewards into thin strips. It's just a pity that he had never seen anyone win the grand prize.
As Fujisawa Sousuke munched on his candy, he calculated how long he would have to train after his feast tonight. The sweet candy lingered on his tongue, while bitter tears swirled in his stomach.
"Ah, that stall is very popular!" Aya Kamimura pointed to a handcart. The stall owner was a long-nosed witch-like woman who diligently hunched over and handed out long-handled lollipops. She was surrounded by two or three circles of children.
"Wow, so generous, giving them away for free!" My god, how many calories would that be?! Fujisawa Sousuke struggled to hold back the rest of his sentence as he stepped forward, wondering how much he should pay to avoid seeming like he was taking advantage of someone.
"The adults won't give it to you!" The "witch" suddenly looked up before he could even ask the price. Before Fujisawa Sousuke could respond, she looked back the way they had come, lifted the stroller, and her patience with the children completely changed: "No more, no more, everyone go!"
"Get out of the way, sir!" she shouted, shoving people aside as she ran out. Fortunately, Fujisawa Sōsuke managed to get out in time, otherwise he would have been hit hard by the half-person-high cart.
Fujisawa Sosuke watched her run away, bewildered. "If you don't want it, then don't. I didn't want it anyway."
The "witch's" long black robe floated into the end of the colorful lights. A moment later, a familiar figure came running up, panting, and brushed past Fujisawa Sousuke. The other man was clearly highly focused and didn't even notice the acquaintance standing by the roadside.
"You know him?" Aya Kamimura pressed the button herself and moved to his side—that's right, the wheelchair had a button. A researcher's custom-made equipment couldn't be so shabby that he had to manually turn the wheels. In fact, it even came with a small storage box, which Aya Kamimura stuffed with a lot of the candy she had gotten today.
Fujisawa Sosuke insisted that he pushed the car only because it seemed silly to Kamimura Aya. "I was afraid you wouldn't be able to stop," he said.
Just then, he watched another guy rush off into the distance. The big black-robed witch and the pumpkin man Daigo disappeared into the crowd. He nodded and said, "It's the GUTS guy... He's good-looking and tall. He has a lot of people watching him. His uniform is even more stylish than ours!" The sour feeling came over him again. He realized after he finished speaking and cursed himself for blurting it out. Why did he have to praise others to Aya?
Aya Kamimura said frankly, "I knew it was Daigo as soon as you mentioned it. Now that I think about it, he does look familiar. The GUTS team is famous... Don't worry, I like you."
