"Ha, what do you mean by 'what are we doing'? Can't you tell what kind of business we're in?"
Another one approached, holding a scalpel that spun rapidly between his fingers, displaying superb skill, but he was dressed like a butcher.
"Scavenger"
Ke Ling knew, of course, that in the dark alleys of Night City, you wouldn't encounter ghosts or any urban legends, but you would definitely run into this group of geezers.
Of course, simply using "grilling kidneys" to describe these scumbags is somewhat limiting; what they did was far more than just grilling kidneys.
"Right, the city's cleaners specialize in collecting all kinds of prosthetics and organs. It's such a waste to leave these fresh corpses here to rot. They're a treasure trove."
The cleaner grinned, revealing that he only had one prosthetic eye, a rather strange type that was retractable and could extend outwards.
While talking to Ke Ling, this guy kept sticking out and retracting his prosthetic eye, which was quite the scene-stealer.
This reminded Ke Ling of a phone he used to have, which had a hidden front camera that popped up when needed and didn't retract.
However, the lifespan of such devices has always been a problem that needs to be solved. Constantly using the telescopic function inevitably leads to malfunctions.
"Crack!"
As expected, the cleaner's prosthetic eye couldn't withstand the strain, made a strange noise, and got stuck outside, unable to be retracted.
""
Silence reigned in the city tonight, and the atmosphere in the alleyway instantly became somewhat awkward.
Ke Ling pursed his lips. Although he had not received professional training, he knew when to smile and when not to smile.
"Damn it, can you please stop having problems when you're doing something important?"
The scavenger, holding his submachine gun, twitched his lips and vented his dissatisfaction to his companion.
"Don't worry, this is just a minor issue. You have no idea how useful my prosthetic eye is; it's far superior to your cheap imitations."
The scalpel-wielding cleaner had no self-awareness whatsoever. His prosthetic eye malfunctioned, but he didn't fix it. He squatted down and was about to begin dismembering the homeless man's body.
"and many more"
Ke Ling frowned and spoke up to stop the two cleaners who kept talking to themselves.
"When did I say I was going to hand this body over to you?"
Although this homeless man wasn't a good person either, these two cleaners were definitely the worst of the worst.
Among the types of people that Ke Ling hates the most, those who traffic in people and sell organs are definitely at the top of the list.
For the cleaners, these things are just routine, or rather, they are part of their job.
"Damn it, when did the animal gang's bastards start eating carrion? What's the use of us if you're not going to give it to us? Are we supposed to eat it?"
Ke Ling's words immediately drew the attention of the scavenger carrying a submachine gun. Of course, in reality, the gun never left Ke Ling's body.
""
Well, what the cleaner said is actually true; for Ke Ling, the corpse really could be eaten.
"Don't waste your breath on him, I need to catch up on the cache organ."
The scalpel-wielding cleaner narrowed his eyes as he sized up Ke Ling. This guy from the animal gang looked pretty strong, and his organs must be very healthy.
Unfortunately, the organs of these muscular freaks, whose bodies have been injected with large amounts of hormones and testosterone, and who may even have been transplanted with all sorts of animal genes, really have no market.
The reason they didn't take action against Ke Ling is that the risks and rewards were completely disproportionate.
Animal gang members generally don't have prosthetic bodies, there's not much of a market for their organs, and they're generally quite strong in combat, so why bother with them?
Moreover, this animal gang looks like they're not to be messed with; they've been modified to the point of almost not resembling humans anymore.
They are street cleaners, all in small groups, each fighting their own battles. Their main tactic is to bully the weak and fear the strong, and they usually prey on careless, law-abiding citizens.
First, they attack; then they kidnap; they take the victim's life; then they dismantle the structure for money. If possible, they might even add a "mewtwo recording" in between. It's all become a completely standardized process.
Occasionally, they would take on small jobs that no one else would do, such as small robberies that didn't earn much, fighting to make an appearance, or knocking someone's head off with a club.
They lack the ability and confidence to directly confront the big cliques within the company.
"Get the hell out of here. I'm in a good mood today and don't want to kill anyone. Don't force me to pull the trigger."
The cleaner, holding a submachine gun, threatened Ke Ling, firing two shots near Ke Ling's feet as a warning.
Although he shouted fiercely, he was actually afraid. This is probably what it means to be outwardly fierce but inwardly weak.
Please read my new book! It's really important! Thank you so much, dear readers!
Chapter 11 As expected of Night City
"You don't want to kill, but I do."
Ke Ling grinned, revealing a mouthful of sharp teeth, looking like a cannibalistic demon—or he could actually be.
But can these cleaners still be considered human? They're more like beasts in human skin, and their very smell is disgusting.
"You son of a bitch! Still trying to act tough with me? Die!"
Without further ado, the Cleaner began to "empty the magazine" directly at Ke Ling. This smooth little combo was an essential skill in Night City.
"Da da da!!!"
The rapid gunfire from the submachine gun filled the entire alley, even creating echoes.
In the dimly lit alley, only the muzzle flash of the cleaner's gun was visible, and the smell of gunpowder filled the air.
"Damn it! Even though there's not much of a market for it, maybe some people will be curious about it?! Can't you be a little gentler?!"
Looking at the burly animal gang member in front of him, whose body was riddled with bullet holes, the scalpel-wielding cleaner couldn't help but blame his companion.
Those in their line of work never have too much stock; what if someone's willing to buy it?
"Damn it! You idiot! I don't want to get killed by this guy's claws!"
The scavenger, having emptied his magazine, retorted sharply, quickly switching to a new magazine and preparing to fire another burst.
"Didn't you see the spent shell casings on the ground? Have you fucking forgotten why we came here? This homeless guy just fired a shot too!"
They came here hoping to pick up any remaining enemies because they heard the gunshots, so they naturally knew that a battle had taken place here.
The reason he hadn't made a move was because he felt something was off. There were spent shell casings, bullets, and bloodstains on the ground, but why didn't this guy have any wounds?
"You're actually quite smart."
Soon, Ke Ling showed him why: Ke Ling's wounds healed rapidly, and all the bullets were expelled from his body.
"Jingle, clang, clang."
The bullet landed on the ground with a crisp sound, leaving the two scavengers dumbfounded.
"Zizzi"
A strange noise came from the malfunctioning prosthetic eye of the scalpel-wielding cleaner; it suddenly retracted.
"Shoot! Damn it! What are you waiting for?!"
The scavenger yelled at his "submachine gun buddy," then turned and ran without hesitation.
The "micro-sweeper" paused for a moment, then turned and ran away cursing.
If they're still not dead, what's the point of fighting?! What kind of bastard company came up with this monstrosity?!
"It's too late to run now."
Ke Ling rushed forward in one stride. Although he couldn't dodge bullets and was far inferior to the previous ghost-hunting girl, in terms of speed, these two cleaners were definitely no match for him.
In just a few steps, Ke Ling caught up with the "micro-sweeper" and without hesitation, he grabbed at the sweeper's neck with one claw.
"Oh shit!!!"
The scavenger naturally sensed the approach of death, but instead of turning around to fight back, he fired a shot in front of him.
"Pfft!"
Ke Ling grabbed the "micro-sweeper" by the neck with one claw, and with a forceful pull of its sharp claws, severed the target's neck completely.
Blood gushed out, and the head of the "micro-pump cleaner," its eyes wide open, rolled to the ground. Its soulless body lay limply in the dimly lit alley.
Ke Ling ignored him and continued walking forward. The scavenger with the scalpel was now lying on the ground, struggling to crawl forward.
"You two really are close comrades-in-arms."
Looking at the gunshot wound on the cleaner's back, Ke Ling's lips twitched. Of course, it wasn't him who shot him; it was the work of that "submachine gun."
Knowing he was doomed, the "micro-sweeper" still tried to take his brother with him on his final journey. How touching!
"Pfft!"
Ke Ling killed the scavenger with a single claw strike. Unlike the ghost-hunting girl, he didn't have any penchant for toying with his enemies.
[Ding! Experience +5.]
[Ding! Experience +1.]
The 【Limit System】 popped up with a notification, but it didn't appear immediately during the battle; instead, it appeared after the battle ended, and the results were tallied together.
Ke Ling had some guesses about this. Perhaps the battle settlement of the [Limit System] was only performed automatically after confirming that there was no danger in the surrounding area?
After each battle, can he use the battle results to determine if there are any hidden dangers in the surrounding area?
Once the battle has started and the results are being tallied, it means there are no enemies around. But if the battle hasn't started yet, it means there are still hidden dangers around.
Of course, this conjecture still needs to be verified later, and at present, Ke Ling does not have much evidence to support this conjecture.
"It seems that whether you have a gun or not really matters. We're both scavengers, but the one with the submachine gun got 5 experience points, while this one only got 1."
Ke Ling searched the "Scalpel Cleaner's" body and was surprised to find that the guy didn't actually have a gun. He only had scalpels, tweezers, and other tools on him.
"The division of labor is quite clear. This guy should be in charge of cutting kidneys."
Ke Ling could understand this. Those scavengers who were responsible for cutting kidneys were technical soldiers, since they didn't just cut kidneys, but made sure not a single one was wasted.
Cyber components and organs that can be disassembled and sold for money will be traded directly on the black market. The remaining, unidentifiable parts will either be sold wholesale, burned, or thrown out to feed the rats.
If they fall into the hands of the scavengers, things will never be good for them. To them, humans are just a bunch of objects that can be exchanged for money on the black market.
"In comparison, these people seem almost like cannibalistic demons."
