Chapter 87 Ecology Lesson
Chapter 87 Ecology Lesson
Every Wednesday afternoon, the second period is Saint-Yalo's ecology class. It's similar to biology, but taken outdoors, like a university agriculture course where students learn firsthand how to cultivate soil, breed seeds, and plant crops.
The courses go on to cover even more topics. I heard that in the second year, students will need to go to the field to conduct ecological research reports. In short, it's a subject that is very close to nature.
Wearing dust-proof aprons, rubber gloves, and boots, they stood in the greenhouse, their feet sinking into the soft soil, surrounding their ecology teacher.
The ecology teacher was a short, chubby man named Joe Barton, who had a kind and approachable appearance.
He said to everyone with a big smile:
"Alright! Dear students, do you remember what we learned last week? Today we're going to start with practical exercises: how to mix the nutrient soil, how to select seeds. This is your first time, so don't be nervous, just treat it like a game!"
Joe Barton clapped his hands. "Alright, everyone, work in pairs and complete this together. Let's see which pair finishes first!"
Upon hearing that it was about group work, Leon eagerly went to Caesar's side, and then heard Joe Barton say that the groups would be formed according to student ID numbers.
And the student whose student ID number corresponds to Caesar is...
He turned his head to look at the figure with long, dark blue hair.
"Tsk," Xia's pretty face fell down in annoyance.
With a snap, the shovel sank into the soil, then stomped down, penetrating deep into the mud layer before lifting the handle to turn over the black soil. Then, the back of the shovel was used to break it up.
Sia kept her head down and worked silently in front of him, and Caesar found that she was surprisingly skilled at this kind of physical work.
He was processing a packet of seeds that had already sprouted halfway on the table, trimming the damaged sprouts with a knife.
Neither of them spoke, each doing their own thing, creating a stark contrast between the quiet atmosphere and the noisy, arguing students around them.
They haven't exchanged a single word since the library incident. Caesar has also been through so much lately, and he hasn't paid much attention to Sia's situation.
She had just returned from the Kapur rally yesterday. When Caesar saw her this morning, he noticed that she looked unwell. She had a somber expression since the morning, unlike her previous arrogant demeanor. Instead, she looked deeply tired, with dark circles under her eyes.
It seems the rally didn't go very well.
Sia broke up the soil with a shovel, but her movement paused there as she took a deep breath:
"Can you please stop staring at me like that?"
Caesar then realized he had been lost in thought.
"I'm just waiting for you to finish on your end so I can start preparing the soil mix here."
Xia glanced at him, her eyes showing a hint of displeasure, but she continued turning the soil.
After a while, she placed a basin of freshly turned, soft soil in front of Caesar, then picked up a seed he had cut and examined it, seemingly trying to find some explanation for him.
Caesar calmly began mixing the soil, speaking in a tone as if inquiring about the weather:
Have you been sleeping poorly lately?
"what?"
Sia, who was examining the seeds with a magnifying glass, frowned and looked at him.
"I just noticed you had some dark circles under your eyes, so I was just asking," Caesar said with a shrug.
"Silly question."
"Then I'm sorry to bother you."
Sia gave a low hum, but didn't answer him. She placed the seeds in the plate.
Caesar lowered his head, crushed the perlite, poured it into a measuring cup, and took out the appropriate amount.
"Oh, I just remembered, Sia, you went to the Kapur rally a few days ago. It must have been very tiring, right?" he said casually, raising his head slightly to observe Sia's reaction.
This time, however, he noticed that Sia's eyes had lowered and her hands on the table were clenched tightly, as if she had said something that upset her. "Why do you care about this?" Sia asked softly, glancing to the side.
"Just asking, haha. You know, boys tend to be more interested in politics, and I'm no exception," Caesar said with a faint smile.
Xia pursed her lips, seemingly wanting to say something but then hesitated, before finally saying, "Well, you really do have a terrible hobby."
“That’s true.” Caesar agreed with that statement.
The two quieted down and waited for Caesar to prepare the nutrient soil before planting the seeds in batches in several pots.
Just then, I heard the voices of two boys talking nearby:
"Hey, did you watch 'The Man from Nowhere' this weekend? My god, he was so cool!"
"I watched it, and it's really awesome! Watching the gunfight scenes is especially thrilling!"
"A movie?" Caesar noticed their conversation.
There is now a film industry, but like television, its penetration rate is still relatively low. It is mainly entertainment for middle-class families, and cinemas show the same few movies over and over again each week.
"If we have time, it wouldn't be bad to take Yumilia to see a movie, to let her experience the film industry in this world," Caesar thought.
"If you ask me, the most exciting part was the ending, when the protagonist Tess blew the villain Doctor in the head with a single shot. The scene was so realistic, I was worried that the blood would splatter on my face!"
"What? Actually, I think the Tess people are pretty bad. The guy in the middle was kneeling in front of him begging for mercy, and he still shot him dead."
"What do you know? This is called decisive action! The ultimate thrill!"
Listening to their argument, Caesar couldn't help but smile.
When he turned back to look at Sia, he was slightly taken aback.
At this moment, Xia was frozen in place as if she had been frozen in place, her pupils contracted and her body trembling slightly.
Caesar actually sensed an aura of fear emanating from her.
"What's wrong?" Caesar asked immediately.
But Xia didn't answer him. Ignoring the mud all over her rubber gloves, she covered her mouth and immediately got up and rushed out of the greenhouse without saying goodbye.
"Hey! Xia! Where are you going?" Mr. Gibbon called out hurriedly.
"Tch, that guy, skipping class again." Tess muttered to herself as she watched Sia run away.
Caesar crouched there, watching the spot where Sia had left, his eyes slightly narrowed.
There's no mistake, what was just revealed in Sia was an uncontrollable fear.
It was as if she had seen someone die right in front of her.
Ding Deng Deng.
Xia pushed open the bathroom door, rushed to the sink, and started gagging, supporting herself on the countertop with both hands.
When she looked up, her eyes trembled as she gazed at her pale, tired face in the mirror. The echo of that voice still lingered in her ears.
She covered her face, her lips barely moving:
"I'm so sorry, I'm really sorry."
