Chapter 50 Interview
Chapter 50 Interview
Saint Illustrated Academy.
"One last question, Mr. Moore. You mentioned that you don't hold any position in the capital. How will you take care of your son then?"
Newman, the college secretary general with a goatee on his chin, calmly asked the young father in front of him a question.
“Well, my workplace is in Nile City, so my wife is mainly responsible for taking care of the children here,” the young man replied seriously.
“Oh? So, you, as a father, don’t participate in your children’s education?” Newman asked.
"No, that's not it. I visit my child one day a week, but I'm just too busy with work, so I really don't have time," the man quickly said.
As he spoke, he glanced at his wife and children beside him, who were also very nervous.
“Hmm,” Newman nodded.
"This interview is now over. I apologize for taking up your time. You will be notified of the results in a week."
"Okay, okay."
Seeing their obvious defeat, the family of three left dejectedly.
Newman shook his head and made a mark on the list in front of him.
"Hehe, is the academy having a bad year? All morning, I haven't seen more than a finger's width of satisfaction on your face."
The director of the academic affairs department sitting next to him picked up the black tea in front of him, chuckled, and took a sip.
“This is the impact of the academy’s expansion. How will the board understand that St. Yarrow is an elite academy, not a noble academy?” Newman said, sticking his pen into the inkwell and shaking his head.
"Yes, look at the families who were interviewed this morning. They act as if being able to pay tuition is all it takes to qualify for admission. Some of them are dressed like they're going to a party."
On his other side, the college's deputy secretary-general also spoke.
"There's nothing we can do. That's just how things are now. The kingdom requires it, and other academies are also expanding their enrollment. Lowering the requirements is just a matter of being forced by circumstances," the director sighed.
The maid came up and replaced the teacup from the previous family. Newman looked at the next family he was interviewing and narrowed his eyes slightly.
"Elf."
He became a little curious, cleared his throat, and announced that the next family to be interviewed could come in.
The door opened, and in came a black-haired, exceptionally handsome young man, dressed in a neat, youthful formal suit. He was tall and upright, and his handsome face carried a gentle, faint smile.
Beside him was a girl whose face looked extremely nervous.
The girl had long, gray-white hair, delicate and pretty features, and seemed to be wearing light makeup. She was dressed in a dark long dress, a shawl with lace trim, a round hat decorated with flowers, and was carrying a lady's handbag.
This combination surprised all three interviewers.
Newman held up the list of resumes in her hand. It was from a single-parent family; the parents were elves, and the child was adopted by her.
Newman looked at the woman whose appearance was no different from that of a young girl. He could tell that she was trying to make herself look more mature, but she still looked too childish.
On the contrary, the young man had an inexplicable mature air about him, and he gave people a very gentle feeling. He was the kind of person who seemed to be friendly to everyone.
“Mr. Newman, Mr. Delif, Mr. Hunter, greetings. My name is Caesar Thranduil, and this is Yumilia Thranduil. I am honored to have this interview opportunity. I would appreciate your guidance, teachers.” The boy bowed and greeted the three interviewers. They nodded, and after the elf sat down, he sat on the sofa directly opposite Newman.
The director and deputy secretary on both sides exchanged glances and nodded.
The boy named Caesar exuded a calm and composed demeanor, but his guardian seemed quite awkward, almost twisting his ankle when he sat down.
“Caesar, hmm.” Newman nodded: “I had a slight impression of you before. You got A+ in all subjects on the entrance exam and ranked second in the overall rankings. Your academic level is among the top in the whole school. Did you spend a lot of time studying in the past?”
“Yes, but even if I continue to study, I will pay attention to developing my physical abilities. Although I am satisfied with my entrance exam results, I still need to make enough progress and work hard. After all, grades are only part of the ability assessment, and schools can teach us more than we can learn from books,” Caesar replied.
"Hmm," Newman nodded, satisfied with the answer.
"Do you have any hobbies or recreational activities that you're good at?" the director of the academic affairs department asked.
“Playing ball, cycling, and chess,” Caesar said with a smile.
"I don't want to be modest. I'm very good at chess and I often participate in various chess activities organized by the school and always rank among the top players."
"Are you good enough at any subject?" Newman asked.
"History, especially the history before Christ, the era of swords and steel, that time of rising heroes and countless powerful figures, is fascinating. I've bought many related history books and read them whenever I have free time," Caesar said.
Newman nodded. The report card did indeed show that the other person's history score was first in a single subject.
"However, your family situation doesn't seem perfect. You were raised by her alone, right? Do you think being raised in a single-parent family affected your upbringing?"
“No,” Caesar said decisively.
He placed his hand on Yumilia's hand, which was tightly gripping the hem of her skirt, and smiled faintly:
“I have a wonderful family member who shouldered the responsibility of the whole family and raised me. She gave me everything I needed. I don’t feel that I lacked anything in my upbringing. If there is anything, it’s probably that I haven’t repaid her for raising me enough.”
Still feeling nervous, Yumilia secretly glanced at Caesar. Although the current situation was tense, she couldn't help but smile.
"So, Ms. Yumilia, if I may ask, from what I understand, the physical growth rate and the psychological growth rate of elves are about the same. Do you have sufficient ability to care for your child's growth and provide him with education and guidance during his time at the academy?" Newman asked.
"I...I'll try my best!" Yumilia said.
"Ah"
The director next to him couldn't help but laugh when he heard this answer.
"I'm sorry, I was rude," he said quickly.
This made Yumilia blush and lower her head.
“Actually, I’m not worried about that,” Caesar said calmly. “Because she has raised me for eleven years and nurtured me into a capable child. I believe she will continue to do so in the future. Besides, it would be shameful if I still needed her to worry about some right and wrong issues.”
The answer surprised Newman, who nodded and circled Caesar's name on the list in red pen.
