Chapter 128 America is a little too vibrant
The collapse of America?
Many Americans first heard this novel idea through The Sun.
In response, a segment of the intellectual class began to "reflect" on the situation.
But most Americans just shrug and go about their business.
Although America may seem a bit chaotic and crazy now, hasn't America always been like this?
The situation was chaotic before Prohibition; it's just a bit more chaotic now.
That's what makes us special!
Chaos teems with energy, madness brimming with vitality!
Moreover, given the vastness of the United States, there are bound to be places where things are relatively peaceful.
The country's vastness and diversity allow it to accommodate all kinds of madness without going out of balance.
Collapse? That's something from the last century.
As for The Sun's serious rebuttal, everyone is used to it.
On domestic issues, The Sun will take sides; but on foreign issues, The Sun will only firmly stand with the United States, as if everything the United States says smells good.
Who can doubt its patriotism?
Many people even agree with Logan's point of view: Old Europe always uses their outdated standards to measure us Americans, not knowing that America's greatness lies in its madness!
America wins!
There's only one small problem—
"I think America is a little too vibrant right now!"
The person who said this was President Harding.
He and Attorney General Doherty were taking a walk on the South Lawn of the White House.
From a distance, the president's brow was furrowed and his face was serious, making one sigh: What a dedicated American president! Even while taking a walk, he is thinking about national affairs.
But if you get closer and listen...
"What's going on in those southern states?" President Harding tapped the ground impatiently with his cane. "The KKK and blacks are fighting everywhere? How come these troublemakers weren't all burned to death by the fire? Damn it, I'm so annoyed!"
Minister Doherty immediately corrected him, “That’s not war, Mr. President, it’s just a small-scale conflict at best.”
They were referring to the situation in several states, including Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Mississippi.
In the aftermath of the fire, reconstruction efforts began in the affected areas, but the Ku Klux Klan, which was rapidly growing in several southern states by exploiting white people's fear of "black magic," continued to act as it pleased.
They are no longer satisfied with voting against Black children going to school or burning blood crosses on hilltops to protest against Black people; they want to take more direct action.
They started randomly grabbing lone Black people and whipping them regardless of whether they were guilty or not;
They arbitrarily seized Black people's property. If a KKK member took a liking to Black land outside the Black community and the Black people refused to sell, they would receive an ultimatum from the KKK—a bag of bullets.
More radical members even began to systematically hunt down Black people.
Surprisingly, Black people also launched what appeared to be a fairly organized reciprocal retaliation!
As a result, both sides used all kinds of weapons, from firearms to bombs, and casualties occurred every day.
"Fortunately, there's the New York demolition battle," the Attorney General said thankfully, "which has drawn everyone's attention. Otherwise, the chaos in the South would be giving us a real headache!"
"I'm really having a headache right now!" the president complained. "Can't we find a way to get them all to shut up?"
Doherty shook his head. "Mr. President, we'd better not worry about it."
“The KKK’s influence extends across almost the entire country. In several states, including Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, and Mississippi, they have already deeply penetrated the political arena. Your intervention to stop them will only affect your approval rating!” Seeing President Harding’s brow furrow even deeper, Dougherty reassured him, “Mr. President, there’s no need to worry. Once the Black resistance is exhausted and the KKK has vented their pent-up emotions, everything will be alright!”
"This is America's self-regulating mechanism!"
"I hope so," President Harding sighed, wiping the sweat from his brow with a silk handkerchief.
“What we can do now is to keep everyone’s attention on New York.” Dougherty then steered the conversation back to the demolition battle. “The demolition companies want to bring in more demolition equipment, what do you think…”
President Harding said he was in for another headache, "More? I seriously doubt they can use these tools effectively. The tanks we saw earlier were destroyed before they even had a chance to do anything!"
"Is it meaningful for us to give more?"
The Attorney General lowered his voice. “That makes sense, Mr. President. How can gamblers believe the demolition team will win if they aren’t given more tools? That’s how they got in last time.”
"I'm really afraid that if I continue like this, I'll be held accountable by Congress!" President Harding said worriedly.
“No, that won’t happen.” The Attorney General said confidently. “As far as I know, the military has expressed a desire to give them more tools for ‘demolition,’ apparently to learn urban warfare tactics from it…”
"Huh?" President Harding stopped and looked at his Attorney General in disbelief. "Learning tactics from the mafia? Is the military serious?"
Doherty sighed. "Yes, Mr. President, our army is a little... rubbish!"
President Harding was speechless.
"It seems we have no choice but to continue relying on the gangs," President Harding remarked.
"Yes, Mr. President! Our country has always been inseparable from gangs."
President Harding continued his rant, "Sometimes I even wonder if we're not a country at all, but a giant gang masquerading as one!"
"Your Excellency is truly wise!"
The Attorney General doesn't really want to say this; you can be more confident and remove the word "suspicion."
When has America not been a big mafia?
Therefore, the Attorney General also scoffed at the "American collapse theory" of old Europe.
This argument treats the United States as a normal country, but can the United States be considered a normal country?
We were just a makeshift gang, how could we possibly collapse?
Ha, ignorant Europeans!
The two continued their walk on the lawn, discussing how to support New York gangs and divert public attention; sometimes gesturing with their hands, sometimes shaking their heads in opposition.
In the distance, the Washington Monument gleams in the sunlight, symbolizing the ideals and glory of this gang—no, this nation.
From the outside, it looks like a beautiful picture of a president who is diligent and concerned about the country!
Tourists who were allowed to visit the White House courtyard after President Harding took office felt a surge of warmth upon seeing this scene from afar.
There are actually people outside saying that President Harding is colluding with gangsters and engaging in filthy deals?
These people are so vicious!
Our esteemed, kind, and patriotic president might be discussing right now how to crack down on gangs that collude with the government!
That's so touching, my Mr. President!
