Doomsday America

Chapter 48 At Least Value Blocks

Chapter 48 is worth at least ten dollars.

"What? Holy crap! I'd better take a good look!"

As soon as Gavin finished speaking, Eugene quickly pulled out an 8x scope, put it over his eye, and looked at the lake.

Madison, looking on with surprise, approached Gavin and gazed expectantly through the binoculars.

It wasn't that old Bert wasn't important; it was just that he wanted to see him too, since old Bert could still respond, and being able to respond meant he was still alive.
As for Gavin...

He looked through his binoculars at the center of the lake, about 2.6 kilometers away, and frowned as he gazed at the naked man lying on his back on the lake, occasionally moving his arms and legs.

After glancing around twice, Eugene finally located the woman and then instinctively spoke to Gavin.

"Phew, found it, but are you sure it's not a zombie? I don't think that figure is swimming at all; she's just floating around, occasionally splashing around!"

"Let me see, let me see, you bastard, what can your eyes see!"

Taking advantage of the opportunity, Madison snatched the 8x scope and began to observe.

At the same time, Gavin put down his binoculars and began to explain to Eugene.

"You should pray it's not a zombie, buddy, because if zombies can swim, then I have to be prepared for them to also dig tunnels and do pole vaulting!"

"Uh……"

Eugene was startled by Gavin's words, but then he suddenly remembered something and replied to Gavin with a strange smile.

"Wait, a quarterback who can pole vault and dig tunnels? Are you sure you're not talking about Plants vs. Zombies?"

"Will we ever see Michael Jackson crawl out of his grave, accompanied by a group of zombie dancers, and glide across the room to open our minds?"

As soon as he finished speaking, Eugene was amused by his own words and laughed to himself.

Michael Jackson passed away in 2009, and Plants vs. Zombies was also released in 2009. The impact of these two events, even after 13 years, has not yet faded.

Upon hearing Eugene mention Michael, Gavin pursed his lips and said regretfully.

"Stop joking around, Michael is my friend. Let's not talk about this anymore, let's go see old Bert first."

“I know this, boss. You even spoke up for Michael back then, but unfortunately no one was willing to believe you, Madonna, or that arrogant blond real estate developer.”

As Madison responded, he put down the 8x scope and went to Gavin's side to continue speaking in a low voice.

"But boss, are you sure that thing on the lake isn't a zombie? I don't have your sharp eyes, but it doesn't look like a living person to me either, it's not even thrashing around!"

"We'll find out soon enough whether it's a human or a zombie. Old Bert's villa has a small dock that extends outwards; he should have two small boats. Let's go take a look!"

As he spoke, Gavin reached out and opened the villa door, then strode inside.

"Old Bert, are you there?!"

As soon as he entered the villa, Gavin shouted.

Then, without needing to respond, he simply followed the sound of coughing and looked toward the second-floor veranda of Old Bert's house.

At this moment, old Bert was coughing and lying face down on the stairs leading from the second floor to the first floor, his face flushed as he looked at Gavin.

"Ahem... This is not the right time to meet. I made a mistake, Gavin..."

Old Albert said awkwardly to Gavin.

Seeing that old Bert was still lying on the stairs, Gavin quickly rushed across the carpet, all the way to the stairs, and awkwardly tried to pull old Bert away.

He asked as he reached out his hand.

"What happened? How did you get here? I thought I'd see you lying in bed looking like you'd never seen life again, or sitting in a deck chair ready to shoot yourself!"

"Wait, no! Don't pull me!!!"

Gavin's sudden action startled old Bert, who quickly stopped Gavin and then spoke rapidly.

"I have a herniated disc, damn it, it might be because I coughed too hard one time!"

"Please don't pull me! My whole back and butt hurt so much! Cough cough, let me... adjust my position first!"

As he spoke, old Bert blushed and desperately tried to cover his buttocks.

He usually sleeps naked in a bathrobe at home, but now he's lying face down on the stairs, his big butt sticking out.

Behind Gavin, Eugene and Madison glanced at old Bert, and then Eugene said with a smirk.

"Ah, what a white ass! Hello, old buddy, I'm Eugene!"

"I'm Madison, this is quite a unique way to meet, haha~"

As the two greeted Albert, his old face gradually turned bluish-purple, and his cough intensified.

Seeing that he was coughing badly, Gavin and the other two quickly took a few steps back.

Seeing them retreat, old Bert said to Gavin with a pained expression, "Don't hide so fast, kid. I know what's wrong with me. It's just pneumonia from catching a chill, like a racehorse that goes straight into the water after a race!"

"Go to the room on the left on the first floor with the dog, and get two boxes of azithromycin. That stuff is really effective, cough cough!"

Azithromycin?

Behind Gavin, Madison muttered something, then went downstairs and walked to the left.

Not long after, he was chased all the way back by a fierce Rottweiler, and ran back amidst the barking of the dog.

Watching Rottweiler chase Madison, old Bert struggled to lay his body sideways on the stairs, then flipped over to prop himself up on the carpet, gripping the handrail with both hands and leaning there, speaking with a pained yet poignant expression.

"Ha...cough cough haha, how long has it been since I've seen a scene like this? When I was young, Bella's grandfather used to chase after the slaves on our farm and bite them relentlessly, just like this~"

"Come on, old man, you didn't have any black slaves when you were young. I'm here to rescue you, not to listen to your bragging!"

Gavin interrupted old Bert impatiently.

Upon hearing this, old Bert mischievously pouted.

"Ha, it's just a change of name, from slave to hired worker, but there's no difference in essence."

Old Bert's words are indeed true, after all, when Old Bert was young, it was the 1960s and 1970s in America.

In that era, the status of Black people in the American North had improved slightly.

But in the more conservative American South, especially among the large plantation owners, Black people, though no longer slaves, could still be killed at will for simply looking at white women.

Hearing old Bert's words, Eugene couldn't help but burst into laughter.

He shouted at Madison, who was running back, while laughing.

"Haha, keep it up, Mike! That awesome dog Bella's ancestor might have even surpassed yours!"

"Fuck you, Eugene!"

Madison retorted with a curse, easily shaking off Rowena and getting behind Gavin.

"Boss, the medicine is here!"

He handed the azithromycin to Gavin.

On the stairs, after seeing Madison's exaggerated height and physique, old Bert finally couldn't help but swallow hard and said.

"Shit, I didn't see you clearly just now. You're ridiculously strong, you black kid. If this were a hundred years ago, I bet you'd be worth at least ten dollars, maybe even twenty!"

"Haha, of course, my body... wait..."

Madison had barely finished his proud reply when he suddenly realized something was amiss, so he rolled his eyes and asked old Bert.

"That's not a nice thing to say, is it? I knew I shouldn't have gotten you the medicine, you old man!"

"Alright, forgive this old man, Gavin, hurry up and give me the medicine."

Old Porter waved mischievously at Madison, then reached out to Gavin.

Seeing this, Gavin carefully examined the medicine packaging, hesitated, swallowed, and asked.

"Old Bert, are you sure this is the medicine? It's clearly dog medication, it says so on the packaging!"

As soon as he finished speaking, Gavin pointed out the dog's head on the packaging box to old Bert.

So, to everyone's astonishment, old Bert grabbed the azithromycin and opened the box with a smile.

"I know, it's veterinary medicine. After all, I'm not Joanna, I'm a veterinarian!"

"Believe me, veterinary drugs are sometimes more effective than human drugs. Although there are always some side effects, veterinary drugs work faster, cough cough!"

Amidst the coughing, old Bert picked out a few pills and swallowed them dry.

After swallowing the pills while supporting his neck, he took a breath, leaned on the armrest, and waved to Eugene.

"Red-haired kid, can you help me find some water? There's water anywhere."

"Ha, you're really good at bossing people around, fine~"

Eugene chuckled and nodded, then turned to go find some water.

Watching Eugene's retreating figure, old Bert continued to smile and speak to Gavin.

"Little Gavin, where did you find these awesome young men? That red-haired kid is a born cowboy. He has cowboy hair and cowboy face, and he's as short as most cowboys!"

"Damn it, you didn't have to add that last sentence. Old Mike, go get some water for this old bastard. I'm going to the lake to fetch that naked girl!"

Eugene immediately turned around and gave old Bert the middle finger, then rushed towards the back door of the villa, the one that connected the backyard and the small dock.
