Chapter 114 Run, Little Sister!
Chapter 114 Run, Little Sister!
"Luo Annian! You stop right there!"
As the hunched old man rushed out of the old-fashioned apartment building, the short-haired little girl had already run far away.
"Run away! Don't ever come back!" the old man cursed angrily from behind, then grabbed the building door and gasped for breath.
"Are you trying to drive me crazy?!" The old man rested for a moment, then jumped up again, "You're not going to eat dinner tonight! You'll starve!"
This jump finally exhausted her strength, and her body leaned against the wall of the unit door.
"You have to be like your dad...you have to drive me crazy, don't you..." The old man reached up and wiped his deeply furrowed eyes. "What's so great about that computer? It's like it's possessed! Don't come back, what's so great about that computer..."
The gray stain on the wall rubbed against her back, leaving a white mark that revealed her hunched back.
A little girl with short hair, carrying an old yellow schoolbag, ran like the wind.
She ran past the gate of the residential area, past the shops on the street, past the construction site where the road was being dug up not far away, past the construction machinery parked on the roadside, and squeezed into a small alleyway that was half blocked off by fences. She bypassed several large pits dug in the road and lifted the self-closing curtain of "Jiaozhan Internet Cafe" before going inside.
Thinking it was a customer, the middle-aged man sitting idly behind the bar turned around and looked over.
"Uncle Gang," the short-haired girl whispered.
Upon seeing that it was her, the middle-aged man immediately stopped smiling, stubbed out his cigarette, and raised his chin: "Number 24 is open inside. Help yourself to whatever you want to drink."
"Hmm." The short-haired girl looked around and saw a customer boarding a machine not far away. She quickly ducked her head, tiptoed forward, and then sat down in front of machine number 24.
With the partition next to it blocking it, it's almost completely invisible.
"Boss, check please." The only customer, who was boarding a plane not far away, stood up.
This is a man in his thirties, wearing a light blue crisp shirt, black trousers, and carrying his own backpack.
He retrieved his deposit, turned to look at the little girl, and asked, "Does your internet cafe allow minors to enter?"
"That's not a guest, it's my own niece," the owner said.
"She's playing on the computer, isn't she?" the man asked.
"No, she's my home network administrator, she's fixing my computer."
"How old is she? Eleven or twelve? Working as a network administrator?"
"Yes, she's known how to fix computers since she was little," the shop owner said. "She's the one who fixes all my computers."
"I seem to remember that minors are not allowed to work part-time while studying? Isn't that illegal?"
"I didn't give her any money." The internet cafe owner picked up another cigarette, instinctively reaching for a lighter. After a couple of tries without success, he said impatiently, "What law says you can't do work for your own family? Can't you even do anything legitimate? Is doing work for your own family illegal?"
"Oh, so who is she to you?"
"My own niece."
"Huh? What's her last name and what's yours?" the man in his thirties asked.
"Who says a different surname means she can't be a niece?" the boss argued illogically.
The man placed a work ID on the counter.
"You know I can punish you, right?"
"What? You don't have a computer at home? Can't your kid take online classes? Anyway, my lousy shop is losing money so badly it's going to go under. If you punish me, I'll close down and hang myself in front of your workplace tomorrow!"
"You just said she was your network administrator."
"Can't network administrators teach online classes? Otherwise, go talk to the education bureau and tell them that the kids shouldn't have online classes during the holidays."
The man sneered, clearly not believing it.
The boss has already said everything in the same old rhetoric.
"If you don't believe me, go see for yourself." The boss was very impatient. He finally found his lighter and lit his cigarette.
The man glared at the boss, put away his work ID, and walked towards machine number 24.
Before I even got close, I could hear the clattering of keyboard keys.
The sound is like someone playing a game.
He quickened his pace and then saw the little girl's screen.
It was an input interface, with lines of code rapidly spreading across the screen.
"I told you it was for online classes." The internet cafe owner said, puffing out smoke as the smell of smoke drifted from behind him.
"Are you asking this to be an online class?" The man turned to look at the shop owner.
"Yeah, she said she was doing practice problems, which is basically the same as taking online classes, right?"
The man fell silent, watching the girl rapidly type out code from behind. A moment later, she finished coding and clicked submit.
A green "AC" appeared on the screen.
"It's AC again," the boss said.
What does AC mean?
"How should I know? Anyway, she always gets AC."
You don't know, yet you still say it?
"Yay!" the little girl cheered, then switched to another screen.
This appears to be a chat interface, showing that you've already exchanged many messages with someone.
The other person seemed to be pleading with her: "Sister, please, I really need this referral card."
She typed: "But I really need that backpack accessory too!"
"Waaaaah, you should have said so earlier! I would have given you my backpack, I just wanted the referral card! You're just a primary school student, what use is a referral card to you!"
“It’s too late,” she said. “Besides, I’m not a primary school student anymore; I’ll be a middle school student soon!”
"What's the difference?!"
The other party is on the verge of collapse.
"It doesn't matter whether you get the referral card or not!" she said. "Brother, you're so weak, do you really think anyone will want you?"
The other party never replied.
It was clearly hit hard.
Then she switched to another screen and sent a message: "I've received the limited edition backpack. I'll send you the redemption code."
Almost immediately, the other party sent a red envelope.
"It's a pleasure working with you. Kid Brother is so efficient!"
"I'm the little girl's older sister..." the little girl murmured.
"Young lady, are you playing in a competition?" the man in the blue shirt asked. "Which school are you from? Are you on your school's competition team?"
"No." The short-haired girl glanced at him, then lowered her head and ran off: "I have to go back, my grandma will be angry if I don't go back!"
"Hey, wait!" The man in the blue shirt chased after her, but the little girl had already disappeared.
The man in the blue shirt looked towards the construction site for a long time but couldn't find anyone. He shook his head helplessly, took out a form from his backpack, and wrote a few lines on a checklist.
After hesitating for a moment in the "Are there any violations?" section, I finally wrote "None".
Then he took a few steps forward, turned around, glanced at the sign, suddenly chuckled, looked down, took out his watch again, and added four dots under the character "Zhan" in "Jiao Zhan Internet Cafe".
The back door of the internet cafe opened just minutes after the man in the blue shirt left.
"Uncle Gang, he's gone?"
"Well, let's go."
"Have I caused you any trouble?"
"No, go ahead, machine number 24."
Back on Unit 24, the girl first opened a shopping website and stared longingly at a laptop for a moment.
His face was brimming with longing.
"I'm still 2000 yuan short. I don't know if I can earn it before school starts. I really, really, really want it..."
Then she reopened a project and started looking at it carefully, muttering to herself as she read.
"Is this really code that a human could write? Why can't I understand it... How can I not understand it... Ahhhh, I'm so unwilling to accept this!"
She frantically grabbed her head.
After a long while, she opened a website and sent a message: "Wow, your project is amazing! Can you be my mentor?"
"No." The aloof big shot rejected him instantly.
"Ugh, why is the boss so aloof?! Am I just too weak?!" She scratched her head frantically.
The boss, a few meters behind her, looked at her screen and exhaled a puff of smoke.
"Hey, Ni!" he said, "You'd better hurry up and do what you're thinking! This is the last summer my shop will be open!"
