Xu Ge followed Kaiyoumu and jumped off the truck bed. The sunlight directly overhead made them squint.
The truck was parked on a cleared hilltop covered with gravel. In front of it stood a group of veterans with gongs and drums strapped to their waists and cymbals, energetically banging them.
Xu Ge looked around and found himself in a huge camp, with various training grounds crisscrossing the area, and several dormitory buildings standing along the wall.
Looking further ahead, you realize that the recruit training camp is located in a flat valley.
In the distance, the sky is blue and the clouds are white, and there is a blue lake in the middle of a vast grassland, without any sense of desolation of the Gobi Desert.
"The new recruits are doing well, good positions!" Kaiyu couldn't help but praise.
As the drumming stopped, a group of veterans unloaded their cymbals and drums, eager to try them out.
The truck carried about 20 new recruits, who were now standing in two rows beside the truck with their packs on their backs, being stared at by the veterans. Most of them looked nervous.
Luo Shan glanced at Kaiyoumu, then shouted, "Those in the first row, come and pick your people first!"
Whoosh whoosh!
Three figures rushed over in an instant, raising a cloud of dust high into the air.
The new recruits had no idea what was going on and stood there, too afraid to move.
However, Kaiyu was no new recruit. He grabbed Xu Ge's arm and immediately rushed towards the sergeant on the far right.
The sergeant was taken aback when he saw that a new recruit dared to step forward. Then, he seemed to think that these two guys were not very reliable, and turned around to try to go around to the side.
His idea was simple: these new recruits who acted arbitrarily from the start should be handed over to other squad leaders for training.
Kaiyoumu panicked, ripped off his hat, and hissed, "Du Hu, it's me!"
Sergeant Du Hu was stunned for a moment, stopped and looked closely, then exclaimed, "Holy crap! Kaiyoumu! You're back again?!"
Du Hu's shout immediately drew everyone's attention. Not only the other two squad leaders in the first platoon, but also the squad leaders from other platoons and even other companies all swarmed around him.
This scene startled Xu Ge; he even felt that each of these veterans had a longing and a desire to possess in their eyes.
Du Hu, who had just been looking disgusted, suddenly pounced on Kaiyoumu, grabbed him, and shouted, "Get the hell out of my way, I've already chosen this guy!"
Kaiyoumu pulled Xu Ge in front of him as well: "And him too!"
Du Hu immediately changed his tune without hesitation: "These two soldiers are in my squad now!"
“Fuck!”
"Pity!"
The other veterans looked distressed, knowing that having a veteran who had enlisted twice in a platoon during basic training was incredibly lucky!
However, that's how it is when recruiting new soldiers; if you're too slow, they're gone. The others immediately changed their target and rushed towards the remaining recruits.
"You, big guy, have you ever been to school?"
"I didn't finish high school."
"Come on, come back to Class Three with me!"
Seeing that the third squad leader had taken one first, the other squad leaders didn't bother to ask questions and just grabbed whoever looked good. In an instant, this batch of more than 20 new recruits was divided up.
. . .
. . .
Du Hu had already arrived at the dormitory building with his luggage, leading Xu Ge and Kai Youmu directly into the first room on the first floor.
"We're here. This is our class. You two were the first to arrive. Sit down and rest for a bit!" Du Hu greeted them warmly, casually placing their luggage on the upper bunk of the first bunk bed.
Xu Ge silently sized up Du Hu. This small-eyed class monitor had rough skin and looked to be almost thirty years old.
However, judging from the rank of the opposing sergeant, Du Hu is at most in his early twenties. His current appearance is likely due to years of exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the plateau.
The dormitory is quite spacious, with six bunk beds placed against the walls on both sides and a study desk in the middle. Even so, there is still a few dozen centimeters of space in front of each bed.
Du Hu's bed was the first lower bunk on the left side of the entrance. The quilt on the bed was a little yellowed, but it was folded neatly, and his hat and belt were placed to the side.
This was the first time Xu Ge had ever seen soldiers' neatly folded uniforms in real life, and he couldn't help but take a few more glances at them.
Du Hu's quilt was neatly folded and square, quite pleasing to the eye. A book lay under his hat, seemingly half-read. "You can sleep on the lower bunk, next to the class monitor!"
Kaiyoumu pulled out a small stool from under the second bed next to Xu Ge and handed it to him. Then, he casually took the book from under Du Hu's hat and started flipping through it.
"Oh my, what do you think of this?" Kaiyoumu asked, sounding somewhat surprised.
Upon hearing this, Xu Ge looked up and saw a photo of a soldier and a hunting dog on the book cover, with the title "Military Dogs Searching for People and Objects" below.
"Squad leader, you don't know yet, but our regiment is going to establish a military dog squad at the end of the year!" Du Hu said with a smile. "I'm preparing to take the trainer exam."
Kaiyoumu was taken aback: "Class monitor, what did you just call me?"
Du Hu smiled smugly: "Deputy squad leader, you are the deputy squad leader of the first squad of the first company of new recruits."
"When did this happen? How come I didn't know? Who appointed him?"
"Now you know, don't you? I just appointed you!"
Du Hu looked at Xu Ge, "Your name is Xu Ge, right? Quickly call him the deputy squad leader!"
Although Xu Ge was also a little confused, he immediately stood up, saluted Kaiyumu, and shouted, "Good morning, squad leader!"
"Hayam!"
Kaiyoumu finally realized what was happening and glared at Du Hu. "I treated you like a brother, and I brought you a promising talent. Are you just using me as a tool? I want to switch shifts!"
"Go ahead and change. Other squad leaders will treat you like an animal." Du Hu patted Kaiyoumu on the shoulder. "With me, at most you'll be in charge of training the new recruits and tidying up their quarters. I have exams to take, so as a brother, help me out!"
Kaiyoumu looked displeased: "I need to make the most of my time to train my physical fitness, where would I find the energy to do that?"
Du Hu's expression changed upon hearing this: "Kaiyoumu, why did you come back again? Are you still thinking about going to the Eighth Company?"
Kaiyoumu didn't say anything and sat down on the stool by himself.
"It's not easy to get into the Eighth Company. You know they don't select people from the recruit training camp."
"I know, I'll sign up for the selection after I get to my unit!"
"Whatever, you're already here anyway." Du Hu sighed. "You two rest for a while, I'll go find the quartermaster to get your personal belongings."
"I brought a quilt; just store the new quilt in the warehouse."
After Du Hu left, Kaiyoumu opened his backpack, took out an old, yellowed quilt, and began to fold it on Xu Ge's upper bunk.
"Squad leader, do you need any help?" Xu Ge asked in a low voice, noticing that Kaiyoumu was in a bad mood.
"No need. You can watch how I fold the blankets. That's the first thing you need to learn."
"Yes!"
"Do you know why I don't use new blankets? Because they're hard to fold!" Kaiyoumu said as he worked, and in no time, the basic shape of a tofu block appeared.
Xu Ge noticed obvious creases on Kaiyoumu's old quilt, and easily folded the quilt into a square shape according to those creases.
Kaiyoumu explained while fiddling with the string, and Xu Ge listened attentively. Before he knew it, the token appeared, and the second skill slot on the front lit up: "Internal Affairs LVI (5/99)".
[100% execution of current military orders, Internal Affairs Proficiency +5]
At the same time, many techniques for folding blankets came to mind.
After folding the blankets, Kaiyoumu got out of bed and began explaining some of the classroom facilities to Xu Ge, seemingly taking on the role of the class vice-class leader.
After getting a general idea of what was going on, Xu Ge couldn't contain his curiosity and asked, "Squad leader, what is this Eighth Company that you and the squad leader were talking about? Is it also part of our regiment?"
"Initially, they were organized as an independent unit, but now they're part of the Wolf Brigade." Kaiyumu said with longing, "Have you heard of the Sirius Assault..."
"Squad leader! Xu Ge! Hurry, another vehicle has arrived! Come with me to rescue the person!"
Before Kaiyoumu could finish speaking, Du Hu rushed in carrying a large pile of sheets and blankets, tossed them onto the bed, and hurriedly shouted.
