Chapter 194 Semi-finished products
huff…
huff…
huff…
In the dark, enclosed space, only the violent breathing of some unknown entity could be heard.
Haven and Annie hid at the tunnel entrance, barely daring to breathe. For Haven, it wasn't that he was truly terrified, just a general sense of caution when facing the unknown. (Okay, actually, he was just a little scared.)
Just as Haven involuntarily swallowed, the shadowy figure, having lost its target, stirred again, as the sound of chains scraping against the ground grew closer.
Knowing that he couldn't just sit and wait to die, otherwise he would suffer a great loss if he waited for this unidentified thing to stick to him and then reacted.
Having made up his mind, Haven held Anne's arm with one hand and tightly gripped the magic scroll that had appeared in his palm with the other.
After silently counting down to three in his mind, the magic scroll in his hand was suddenly activated. Instantly, countless exploding fireballs appeared, illuminating the dark hall with their light.
Thump thump thump~~~~
The level-three magic Explosive Fireball exploded like fireworks the instant it made contact with the object. Haven, who was pulling Annie back, stared intently at the area engulfed in flames.
"This is?"
In the firelight, Haven looked at the dark figure, and the flames stuck to the figure and instantly burst into flames.
"Is it a werewolf? Or a human? Or something else?"
No one could answer Haven's question, but it seemed that this werewolf hybrid had little ability to think and had no good way to deal with the flames burning on its body, letting out a shrill scream as it was burned by the flames.
Two minutes later, the unidentifiable figure collapsed to the ground with a thud, and the smell of burnt flesh wafted out, emitting a foul, burnt odor.
After confirming that the other party was no longer moving, Haven walked over with his short sword in hand and, by the light of the fire, finally saw what the charred object was.
Is this a semi-finished product?
Looking at the obvious werewolf features, but also the incompleteness that was different from the werewolves he had actually seen, he began to think carefully. After all, this werewolf, or rather, this human, was not quite a complete werewolf in any respect.
It grows wolf-like ears on its head, but its face is still human-like, without a mouth. Its arms, although much thicker, are still human-like, but its legs have become wolf-like with reverse joints.
It looks like an incompletely evolved product, stitching together parts of human and werewolf structures.
Although the explosive fireball he himself fired had dealt with the problem, Haven didn't want to put himself in such a dangerous situation. Besides, he had a burden with him, and if a fight really broke out, his side wouldn't have the upper hand.
Just as Haven was considering whether to retreat the way he came and call for backup so that a real professional could clean up the crime scene, the sound of chains sliding on the floor rang out again in the dimly lit hall, this time even more frequently.
"Damn it! Damn it! Damn it!"
Using the remaining firelight, Haven could make out the figures moving in the darkness of the hall. Now Haven was certain that he had definitely arrived at an important location of this werewolf cult.
It seemed the werewolves, originally a failed creation, were left to fend for themselves. Little did they expect that their own intervention would awaken these beasts. Running away now was too late; if they were caught in the narrow tunnel and then ripped out, it would be even worse.
Having thought it through, Haven's sapphire crystal on the surface of the Starry Sky Covenant gleamed slightly, and seven or eight scrolls appeared in his hand. He turned to Annie and said seriously:
"Take care of yourself when the fighting starts. Here, climb out of the tunnel and fire it into the sky to call for reinforcements. I'll hold them off for now."
At this moment, dozens of deformed werewolf hybrids emerged one after another from various parts of the hall. Their faces, which had undergone the transformation ritual, were abnormally distorted, with their mouths pulled down to their ears, their black teeth exposed, and a sticky, yellowish-brown covering slowly sliding down the edges of their mouths. Some of the deformed werewolves even still had the clothes they wore before they became humans on their bodies.
"Anne, Anne, no."
The little girl was almost crying as she held the flare Haven shoved into her hand.
"There's a ring next to you. Once you climb out, just pull it towards the sky."
After giving Annie a brief demonstration of the flare, Haven pushed the little girl into the passageway.
"Hurry up, stop dawdling, I'll fight and run at the same time."
Hearing the seriousness in Haven's voice, Anne gripped the signal flare tightly and ran towards the top of the tunnel, not daring to delay for a moment.
"It's really hard to say whether it was good luck or bad luck."
Faced with the dozen or so deformed werewolves that were closing in, Haven first activated a Kapas Earth Shield in front of him. The transparent light shield, emitting a faint milky white light, enveloped Haven.
The next moment, a series of fireballs were launched at the slowly approaching werewolf; these were Havent's improved version of the Fire Elemental Arcane Missiles.
Since Alice recklessly used up all his magic scrolls when they encountered the men in black in that warehouse, he hadn't had a chance to replenish them. When Serena arrived, he completely forgot about it.
Looking at the few attack scrolls he had, he didn't dare use them right away. In this relatively enclosed space, he might easily hurt himself if he wasn't careful.
However, to Haven's surprise, these deformed werewolves did not seem to have inherited the werewolf's strong physique with high physical and magical defense. It seemed that due to the failure of the transformation, their bodies were only slightly more robust than those of ordinary human males.
This also explains why the werewolf was only hit by one of the exploding fireballs and had no ability to resist before turning into a charred corpse.
Now, Haven fired a barrage of fire elemental arcane missiles at the oncoming werewolf, who was shot like a machine gun, a cloud of blood mist exploding in front of him, and tiny flames burning on his chest as he collapsed to the ground.
"It doesn't seem that strong~~"
The werewolf he had seen fighting the griffin riders so fiercely in the rehearsal didn't seem to be the same species. Seeing this, Haven couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief. Now he just needed to slowly retreat, wait for the Imperial reinforcements to clear the area, and then he could survey the scene.
Just as Havent was pondering, the sound of a chain scraping against the ground rang out. Havent turned his head and saw a burly figure running towards him.
The next moment, a huge wolf claw slammed into the protective shield. The Kapas Earth Shield trembled slightly before returning to normal. The shadowy figure, whose attack had failed and who had been thrown back by the recoil, took a few steps back and stopped outside the protective shield.
Now Haven finally saw clearly what was attacking him—a werewolf, but not so deformed. Compared to other werewolves, except for his right arm, which still resembled a human arm, he had become almost entirely werewolf-like, even growing a tail.
Compared to the other deformed werewolves who seemed to be a bunch of unconscious creatures acting solely on instinct, this werewolf, while equally ferocious and looking like it wanted to tear Haven apart, didn't have as much madness in its eyes. Its green pupils carefully examined the protective shield that was separating the two personalities.
Suddenly raising his head, he let out a wolf howl. As the howl rang out, Havent, who had been keeping his mental energy activated and on high alert for danger, couldn't help but change his expression drastically. In his perception, something extremely dangerous seemed to have awakened in the darkness not far away.
"Damn it~ Damn it~~~ Going straight into the boss scene without doing any strategy is just asking for trouble."
The peaceful life in the capital during this period has made Haven not shown the corresponding respect when facing potential dangers. At least when he came down just now, he did not call for help when he should have, and he relied too much on intelligence and his own judgment.
Although there was no background music playing, Haven, who didn't want to watch the entrance animation, decisively took out a Flame Impact Magic Scroll and activated it. Crimson fire elements rapidly gathered under the activation of the magic runes on the surface of the scroll. Two seconds later, a huge pillar of fire with a diameter of thirty centimeters shot towards the place where Haven sensed danger.
The explosion instantly illuminated the entire hall, and thick smoke billowed from the areas hit by the flames.
Although the attack landed successfully, Haven's brows furrowed even more, as he sensed that the figure emanating a dangerous aura had not disappeared.
"Holy crap, this really does mean no harm even with smoke!!!!"
As the smoke cleared, Havent finally saw what the dangerous figure was: a huge two-headed wolf made of severed limbs and flesh.
The two-headed wolf had no fur at all, only exposed flesh and blood. A reddish-brown viscous liquid kept flowing down its surface. Its five-meter-tall body looked extremely intimidating, and the aura of fear it subconsciously released made Havent frown involuntarily.
"This is a wolf-type abomination? That's rather evil."
Looking at the bloody, mangled human arm hanging on the wolf's face, Haven admitted that he felt a little nauseous and wanted to run away. It was just too disgusting, completely exceeding the limits of human endurance. It was the kind of thing that would give a child nightmares for days.
The two-headed wolf stood there stunned for a moment, like an old machine that was slow to start up. As both wolf heads looked at him, Haven's heart skipped a beat, and only one thought remained in his mind: to run.
But before Haven could even move to the tunnel entrance, the two-headed wolf had already launched its attack, its massive body hurtling towards them like a heavy truck.
Feeling that he was running too late to reach the tunnel entrance, Haven had no choice but to run in the opposite direction. He had only run a few steps when the charging two-headed giant wolf used its powerful body to burst the Kapas Earth Shield like squeezing a balloon.
Unable to stop, the two giant waves crashed into the wall, and the collapsing rocks blocked most of the tunnel entrance.
Having barely dodged the attack, Haven raised his hand and unleashed a barrage of dense fire elemental arcane missiles, knocking down the approaching deformed werewolf. Seeing that his escape route was gone, his heart sank completely.
Oh no, everything's been going too smoothly lately. I've really let my guard down. Now all I can do is...
He glanced down at the silver magic scroll in his hand. It was a random teleportation scroll, but the five-second activation time was a problem. He really should have brought a helper; even if he managed to escape, it would be a huge loss.
To activate the random teleportation scroll, you need to use a higher-level defense scroll. Although Haven is rich, he doesn't spend money like that. A simple investigation mission costs him six thousand gold coins, which is heartbreaking.
But the deformed werewolves that surrounded him clearly had no intention of giving Havel a chance to reflect. Driven by their killing instincts, they pounced on Havel.
'Voice, Sloth, Da'
A powerful gust of air emanated from Havent's chest and propelled him forward rapidly. Instantly, the deformed werewolves that had surrounded him were blown away by the force. However, the two-headed giant wolf that struggled to get up from the wall was unaffected. It only swayed slightly before its two heads looked back at Havent, who was not far away.
Just as Havent was about to activate the random teleportation scroll to escape, a huge beam of light pierced through the ceiling and slammed into the two-headed giant wolf. The hall shook violently, and Havent, who was sitting on the ground, thought it was an earthquake.
When Haven looked up at the large hole blasted open by the beam of light, a familiar figure slowly floated down.
"Hey, Serena? What brings you here?"
Looking at the blue-haired girl enveloped in a torrent of magic, Haven couldn't help but ask in surprise.
“I sensed that Will was in danger, so I came.”
With the danger averted, Haven breathed a sigh of relief. With Serena here, he was safe; this two-headed bastard was nothing.
Only after relaxing did Havent feel the burning sensation emanating from his forearm. When he rolled up his sleeve, he saw that the magic runes Serena had left on his arm were radiating intense heat.
"Phew~~~ Thank goodness, thank goodness. If you hadn't come, I would have run away. We would have lost a lot of money on this trip and would have had to miss out on eating at so many restaurants."
The two-headed giant wolf, knocked down by Serena's attack, struggled to its feet and cautiously looked at the small creature in front of it. Its wild animal instincts made it aware of the threat to its life. Its two wolf heads bared their teeth at Serena, while its body slowly retreated.
When Serena heard Haven say that she would eat out less and eat less delicious food, her beautiful eyebrows furrowed.
"That's really awful, Will. Should we kill it?"
"Um... kill him, but leave him with a whole body. I need to study him."
